I don't know if this idea has been paraded around before. Probably, as the game has been out for a while now. If so, please forgive me.
It's just that I've been a comic book fan all my life, and as was playing the other day I thought about all those times that heroes batle between themselves due to some misunderstanding before realizing who the true villain is, or that other times that a hero is mind-controlled by a villain and forced to battle their colleagues.
So have any of you tried to play this as a competitive game? Let's say 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 heroes. I don't know if it would work, probably not, as the hp of the heroes is not that high, and some heroes like Ra can deal quite a lot of damage in a single round. Also, the games probably would only take about 10-15 minutes before there's a winning side, so really short games. But it might be worth a try.
And the other thing: the solo game is fun (I've already played it three times and I'm not big on solo games as a rule, so three times is a lot for me) but to manage 3 or 4 heroes plus the villain plus the enviroment is quite an ordeal (at least for me). I'm thinking it would be a great idea if Greater than Games would create an expansion with some small-time villains for one on one play or solo games. I'm just spitballing here, but they could have a deck the size of a hero with similar gameplay for the villains. Am I just being crazy here? Would people be interested in that?
Count me in on the solo or team-up villain decks. Think of it this way:
In between his big fights with Green Goblin or other, bigger villains, Spider-Man thwarts the occasional bank robbery by the Rhino.
The Rhino, Electro, Vulture, Shocker, The Lizard - pretty much Spider-Man's entire gallery of rogues are only worthy of one-shot issues. These are the kinds of villains that would make for interesting and fun solo/team-up decks.
Ambuscade without Charged Attacks and all the additional card plays is already pretty much in these wheelhouse - fitting since he's essentially Kraven without all the mental problems.
That's exactly what I was thinking. The idea came to me while looking at one of the cards from Tachyon's deck. Can't remember the name, but it was the one which features another speedster and the comic book bubble at the bottom of the card said something like "For the last time. No, you are not my nemesis".
I love villain team-ups. I haven't had the chance to play vs The Ennead (really looking forward to get that expansion), but something that allowed one on one play/small time battles against second tier villains could be also fun and an interesting way to expand the gameplay. But who knows? Maybe that's something coming up on the Vengeance expansion
There are theories floating around that Vengeance will allow you to break out individual villains (it's based around a villain team lead by Baron Blade) to fight with fewer heroes. I hope this is true.
Also, we're getting some really cool hero-villain crossovers in Shattered Timelines. Great alternate universe stuff, with heroes becoming angry tyrants and villains realizing the error of their ways. I'm really looking forward to it. I like alternate timeline stuff way better than contrived in-canon hero-vs-hero stuff anyway. You know Thor's not going to kill Captain America, it's just a thing they have to throw in there because the fight looks cool. And it is kinda cool, but I usually feel like it works best when they only devote a couple pages to it and then move on.
On the other hand, I don't think the competitive variant of SotM is a particularly good idea. I love co-op games, and one of the things I love most about SotM is that it's a co-op card game. I don't have to find somebody to run the villain, we can just all hop in and all work together. A competitive variant would completely gut the core of the game, IMO, and while I have no problems with fans trying out wacky things with their cards, I REALLY REALLY hope >G never makes a competitive version of the game. Don't get me wrong, I play competitive games as well it's just that I'm not really sure what I would gain by forcing SotM into that mold. If I wan to play a competitive card game I have decades of really great ones sitting in my closet ready to go: Call of Cthulhu, MtG, Shadowrun, Android: Netrunner, even some old starter packs of Overpower. I mean, go ahead and try it out and let us know how it turns out. I think it'll be fun for a lark, but ultimately unsatisfying and kinda throwaway, which I guess captures the feel of hero-vs-hero plotlines in the comics. ;D
Yeah, I know where you are coming from. I was thinking about all of this because I have a couple of friends who are not really into cooperative games, and I thought those changes might get them into the game, but you are right, it wouldn't really be the same game and there are plenty of other games they can play in a competitive way.
But to be honest, I'm a bit curious at how it would worked a versus mode so I might try and give it a go sometime. I'll let you know how it turns out if I do
I've considered adding characters to M.U.G.E.N twice. Given a lack of artwork, as well as my memory of attempting to graphically upscale a character (image part was simple, other data files were nearly impossible (not difficult so much as tedious)). Thus, I've not really ever attempted anything.
Freedom Force was so great. I tried to find them online to beg them to port it to an iApp so I could pay them money, but I'm not sure the company is even around anymore.
Haven't played Freedom Force in a long time, think I only played it once and didn't like it for some reason, think multiplayer lagged so badly it was unplayable. Probably been a decade or so since then though, the game's most likely stuffed somewhere with all my other old games.
Irrational Games? Yeah, they're still around. Still kinda weirds me out to think that they were the same people who made the *Shock games. They got bought by 2K, who renamed them 2K Boston, and then they got their name back later. The problem with republising Freedom Force on iOS is the game was originally published by EA, but now the studio is owned by 2K. So, unfortunately the rights aren't necessarily a simple issue. Kinda sad, that game was awesome.
Did a web search a couple weeks ago to see if any enterprising retro-gamer and Sentinels fan had created SotM skins for Freedom Force. I'd purchase (re-purchase) that game instantly if there was even the slightest posibility of me being able to build and play as Haka.
