Admins/Game Designer Question about Wrest the Mind

I haven't seen a offical admin post on this yet. Maybe I didn't go deep enough into the ones that had 50 pages.

But first the wording of Wrest the Mind:

Play this card next to a Target, other than a Hero or Villain Character Card. Whenever that target deals damage, you may redirect that damage to another target. If you do, The Visionary deals 3 psychic damage to that target and 3 psychic damage to herself.

If the target leaves play, destroy this card.

I bolded a few key words:

"you may," so you don't have too.

"If you do," Conditional reaction.

"The Visionary" & "herself"

Basically the general arguement is does she take the damage if redirects and kills the target thus removing the card. I think the best way to view this is the order of operations.

Target: Electro-Pulse Bomb (Omintron device: 15HP).

Start of Villain turn. EPB does 15 damage to 4 heros.

Wrest the Mind is used to Redirect 15 damage to EPB
Conditional Reaction is activate:
15 damage to EPB
3 Damage to EPB
3 Damage to Visionary.
But there are two interupts. So the Order would be

15 Damage to EPB
Destroy EPB
Destroy Wrest the Mind
3 Damage to EPB (From The Visionary not the card as the card doesn't do the damage and The Visionary is still in play, also it is a Conditional Reaction so it happens because she did the action) Damage is ignored as the target is destroyed.
3 Damage to Visionary (as she is still in play and the damage is from a Conditional Reaction of her, and not damage from the card).

If I could get a Admin/Game designer to verify if this is correct that would be nice.

Not a game designer but that seems spot on.  Not sure you'll have any of the game designers responding until after Gencon is over.   Though I'm sure one of the playtesters will chime in.

While I am not one of the designers myself, this situation has been discussed before. If Wrest the Mind is destroyed, then any of the damage that has yet to be dealt no longer applies.

So in your scenario, if she redirects the 15 damage to the Electro-Pulse Explosive, thus destroying it and Wrest the Mind with it, then The Visionary will no longer try to deal damage to it or herself.

The best way to look for "official" answers is to look at Spiff's "Rules and Clarifications" document. He is careful only to put in official rulings. The more recent ones have links to specifically where they are answered. This particular answer was reported in the rulings from KantCon (question #5).

Because the card says If you do then deal 3 damage to target and redirect The damage should be dealt to yourself before card leaves play. The redirect happens before the target is destroyed so she should still be dealing herself the 3 damage.

I see where you're coming from, but it has been well established that when a card leaves play, no more effects from that card begin.

Yep. Agree. Got overruled by Christopher.
