(Funny, I just discovered that if you post a topic with a subject line that already exists, you post successfuly but are redirected to the old topic when you click on it. So here's my second try.)
I noticed that Backlash Field has been significantly nerfed in the enhanced edition by removing the 2nd paragraph. In any case, how is the original version intended to work? For reference: "Whenever Baron Blade is delt 5 or more damage in a single turn, put the top card of the villain deck into the villain trash".
What I'm wondering is exactly when and how often is the effect triggered, for example, if I deal BB 3 packets of damage during my turn (5 - 1 -1):
(1) It triggers once, after I deal the first packet, because I've delt 5 damage this turn.
(2) It triggers once, at the end of my turn, since I've delt 7 damage this turn.
(3) It triggers three times: after I deal the first packet (because I've delt 5 damage this turn), after the second packet (because I've now delt 6 damage this turn), and after the third packet following the same logic.
I always implicitly assumed (1), although now (3) seems more likely after thinking about it. I guess (2) is a possibily (in this case, you would only check if something happened on a turn when that turn ends) but it seems unlikely.
Thanks
I interpreted it as one, too.
After thinking about each case, I would say that the first case is the most likely. It triggers once 5 or more damage has been dealt. After that, the condition has been met, and has no reason to keep firing (dismissing the third case). Also, it is stated that it occurs whenever 5 or more damage has been dealt, and not as at the end of each turn, if 5 or more damage has been dealt (dismissing the second case).
While I also feel that, maybe, interpretation (1) is the intended, I don't really see how it can be assumed from the text that this specific card can only trigger once per turn when the condition is met (unlike just about all other cards)? Why wouldn't something like, say, "Lead from the front" trigger also only once (per turn? why?) when its condition is met ?
Anyway, maybe playing it the "hard way" is not a bad idea: Baron Blade can use all the help he can get to put a decent challenge.
The difference between Backlash Field and Lead from the Front is that Backlash Field was worded to trigger once the point of damage has increased to become 5 or more damage, whereas Lead from the Front is worded to trigger whenever a hero target would be dealt damage. Backlash Field was not worded such as "Whenever Baron Blade is dealt damage, if he was dealt 5 or more damage this turn." Basically, there is no wording to say it triggers when damage is dealt, only when a certain amount of damage has passed, which can occur at most once (in this case, it states per turn, thus it can occur at most once per turn).
(i'll keep arguing a bit, I hope you don't mind, not trolling or anything, I just like friendly rules discussions now and then)
Actually, both cards are written in the following format:
Whenever CONDITION, RESULT.
In the case of BS, CONDITION="Baron Blade is delt 5 or more damage in a single turn"
In the case of LFF, CONDITION="A Hero target would be delt damage by a villain card".
The fact that the condition of BS mentions 5+ dam in a turn has no bearing on the overall phrase that describes the trigger (that would be something like "Once per turn, whenever Baron Blade is delt 5 or more damage in a single turn ...")
Also, it does not appear to me that the condition is worded to represent a transition from less than 5 damage to 5 or more damage, it just states that 5 or more damage (period). if I'm damaged for 5, i'm damaged for 5 or more. If then I'm damaged for 8, i'm again damaged for 5 or more...
So... yeah... doesn't seem very clear cut.
I guess it's not really that important, now that it has been rewritten. But I anyway, I enjoy the discussion (sorry about that).
