Cryo Bot question

If Cryo Bot takes enough damage to destroy him, does he still deal out one last burst of damage to everything or just go straight to the trash?

He goes straight to the trash.

Interesting. Based on the "cards are in play for their destruction effects" ruling here, I would have expected the opposite.

Unless, of course, cards are destroyed before they take the damage that destroys them. Then it all makes sense. ;D

It works like any other target, say Citizen Hammer come into play and tried to blast everyone for 3 fire damage, AZ has Transducer and deals him 3 cold, he drops to 0hp and leaves play, no more damage is dealt by him.

Cryo and Captain's Constructs work the same way, the effect wants to trigger but because they are at 0hp they leave play and the effect ends, this time before actually doing anything.

If the text says "When this card is destroyed. . ." then it stays in play while that effect resolves, then continues the destruction process.

Effects triggered by damage don't happen until after destruction (and effects triggered by destruction).

What I'm not understanding is how the same set of basic principles could possibly produce both the Cryo Bot ruling and the Mountainous Carapace ruling.

Is it just the case that effects triggered by destruction are an exception to the basic principles, or is there some explanation that works for both that I'm missing?

Because generally, destroying something immediately ends any effects they had in play; cards with an effect that specifically says "when this card is destroyed," however -- such as any of Akash'Bhuta's limbs, the explosives wagon, etc. -- are a special exception. They remain in play to resolve their effect, but only because they must act after they are destroyed.

Being dealt damage and destruction effects are not the same trigger. Triggers can also interrupt other triggers (note End of Days with Bee Bot). If Cryo Bot is dealt damage, he would typically trigger. However if that damage caused him to go to 0 or fewer HP, a new trigger occurs after he was dealt damage, that being him being 0 or fewer HP. The destruction trigger interrupts the damage trigger, moving Cryo Bot to the trash. You would go be to the being deal trigger, but he is no longer in play, thus not being able to do anything and that's the end of it.

That process makes sense to me. But if the damage and destruction complete before the triggers complete then I don't see how cards with the text, "When this card is destroyed ..." do anything at all, not to mention consider themselves to still be in play while they're performing their text. Essentially, I feel like the two diffent triggers can't be following the same timing rules, and I can't identify any basic principles that would make me think they would need to behave differently.

I have a new solution. When I see "When this card is destroyed..." I'm going to mentally substitute "When this card would be destroyed by any other card .... instead. Then destroy this card." That lets the timing rules be self-consistent in my mind and still follow all of the official rulings.

This is how it works for me:

1.  Destruction is triggered, and checks for things like indestructible status, triggers that would stop the destruction via the word "instead," and "When this card is destroyed" text.  I do it in that order.

2.  If destruction is not prevented by indestructible status or "instead" effects you resolve the text on the card that triggers when it is destroyed.

3.  If destruction is not prevented and after any on destruct text from the card itself is resolved it leaves play, the card leaves play and any effects on other cards that do not prevent destruction by the word "Instead" or other means, now activate.

4.  If the card has not been placed elsewhere by card effect, it goes to its associated trash.

I believe this is the proper order.

EDIT: changed to reflect the suggestion following this post.

Given your claims (and subsequent discussion) here, I would modify that slightly.

  1.  If destruction is not prevented and after any on destruct text from the card itself is resolved it leaves play, then…

3a. All destruction triggers not on the destroyed card happen.  (I think this includes triggers on "leaving play", but am less sure about that.)

3b. Destroyed card goes to trash (unless it already went somewhere else due to 3a).

Good point

Unforgiving Wasteland can prevent a card's on destruction text,so those kind of triggers (triggers that use instead to cancel destruction) have to go first.

Triggers that do stuff to put a card somewhere else but do not include "instead" and do not prevent destruction would be 3a.

We have no ruling on shether a card leaving play and being destroyed is equivalent timing in the common destruction where both qualify.  I think it would work.

Will change my post.
