We love the theme of the game and most of it’s mechanics. However we have a major problem : Damage calculation. We always seem to take a lot of time wondering how much damage we do or suffer between the interactive powers. Subzero is a headache for us! ^^
Are we doing something wrong? :-[
I don’t know that you’re necessarily doing anything wrong. This was something that took our group a little while to really get the hang of. Make sure you’ve, somewhere, got a tally of your damage increase (or decrease), and just do the best you can. It gets easier with practice. I’m sure someone on here has a splendid hack for keeping track of it all, but I’ve yet to come up with an “easy” way.
Are you doing something wrong? No. Some heroes are just maths heavy (Absolute Zero in particular).
What you can do to help speed things up is to put coloured counters next to the cards that increase/decrease the damage, say red for ones that increase damage and green for ones that decrease damage. You could go further and have separate colours for ones that only effect heroes and ones that effect villains, or you could designate areas on the table for heroes and non-heroes and put the red/green counters in those areas and just count them up when you need to do damage.
When the second edition of Sentinels comes out there will be a nice little sheet of tokens included or for those of us with first editions a picture file you can print out instead of using the non-official counters.
If that option doesn’t take you fancy I seem to remember someone having similar problems on BoardGameGeek, wait here a second… #hold music# … ah, here it is Thread
it talks about how one person went through various different solutions to try and track the damage modifiers; in the end they went with pen and paper! There’s a file that the guy made and uses as a tracker, you can give it a whirl and see if it makes things easier for you and your buddies.
You can also keep a seperate die to track it. One of my friends places counters on his character card. Most of the time we just remember, but it is difficult when multiple villain cards and environments in play
I generally just apply the base damage and then look around the table for any modifiers, counting plus or minus as appropriate until I’ve made a complete circle of the table. Absolute Zero, as mentioned, can complicate things, but that’s why I like him.
