Comparisons being inevietable , i.e., “Bunker is your Iron Man type”, “Legacy is Captain America meets Superman” , “Tachyon is like a female Quicksilver”…I have to ask…will the creators of Sentinels approach Marvel or DC Comics and make a million dollar deal to have an expansion using those universes. It’s not that it is necessary, I LOVE the SENTINEL COMIC multiiverse!! But, hey, I am THE COLLECTOR…I would love to give more of my hard earned cash to fill the coffers of Greater Than Games if they strike a deal with those folks.
Marvel or DC could just copy the game, change a few bits, and not have to give up any control of the IP to anyone. I doubt a deal like this would ever happen.
Honestly given some of the people who liscence the characters, I don’t think it is super expensive to do. That said… I really like the original, baggage free, “let your imagination roam” game this is. Sometimes I’ll see a post speculating on a characters favorite breakfast cereal and go “wow, this guy has a lot of time on his hands” but then I realize that this is the strength these characters have. They don’t have 50 years of baggage, so it is fun to ask questions about them.
The other thing… is that the system is really simple, meaning you don’t want to put out a ton of characters and villains, since you would start to run into the barriers imposed by the simplicity. Now I’ve designed games since I could read and write, so trust me, I’m not using “simple” as a negative term. I was recently trying to design a game similar to this one and gave up, it was too complicated. Half of me wanted deep strategic elements with dice, half wanted quick “MTG or Versus” style card gameplay. Then I saw this game in demo and had to say “curse you all, you win”.
I feel almost the same way as The Collector, exept I really really dig the indy nature of Greater than Games - they are able to do really awesome things because they’re a small shop and they own all of the IP for the game.
I am really excited to see more games from them (maybe ones not in the SotM universe?) and even more excited to see SotM comics.
If it never happens, that’s fine. It is fun enough to make a match based upon the power/skill sets and similar history…Ex-Patriot is kind of like Huntress (DC) whose dad was a Crime Syndicate boss, or she is like a “female Punisher”…even in my RPG group, one of my players created an angelic based hero and another created a high-tech/armored hero in our Marvel game. So, to introduce them to SotM, I had him play Bunker and her play Fanatic. I took Legacy just because of his backstory and now everyone is having as much fun as when we played the RPG…except, I can play too and not have the responsibility of being the GM.
That is definitly a big upside to SotM, no one has to be the bad guy. There are the characters who are reminiscent to DC and Marvel heroes, but at the same time have so much more to them that makes them extremely unique at the same time, especially the back stories to the heroes are just purely something I just enjoy reading and making me crave more, which is another really amazing thing about the game.
Rather than trying to compare Sentinels heroes to characters from other comic series, I prefer to let them have their own stories and personalities. Rather than expecting certain things from them because of who they resemble, I prefer to enjoy them for who they are.
Could the Sentinels game be adapted to work with heroes from other IPs? Certainly.
Would it benefit the game? I really don’t think so. I love what we have and want more fresh, new characters and content. I don’t really want to see the game overwhelmed by conversions from other series.
Although ridiculous crossovers can be funny, I don’t think it is something that SotM needs.
You could have a comic where the X-Men team up with Superman to stop the Green Goblin from summoning Cthulhu onto the Enterprise, while Optimus Prime and Harry Potter try to fend off the unholy Klingon/Vampire fleet in their TIE fighters. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.
EDIT: Dibs on the movie rights to that. Hollywood, call me.
Why just Superman when you could bring in the whole Justice League into the mix? And i really think hollywood should contact you, but sadly I think getting that many different licenses to make one movie would take a lot of effort and probably not turn too much of a profit.
I tend to only compare the SotM heroes to other heroes when I am letting them know what kind of powers the hero may have, while still throwing in some additional stuff that that hero does not contain. Such as: Legacy is pretty much the Superman but woudl rather inspire the heroes and will increase their damage and help shield them. Since afterall Superman and a bit of a jerk and would be in there doing the damage instead.

When I introduced my comics-loving friend to this game, I made comparisons like these, and regretted it immediately. Bunker had a bad game, so he contemptuously said “Iron Man is better than that”. and still hasn’t played him. He seems to expect characters to be as flexible and awesome as characters with 50 years of comic book history who have a trick for everything, while simultaneously scoffing at any percieved unoriginality.
That’s probably just him. Even so, I’ll advise against comparisons.
That is another reason I’m against liscenced characters… if Superman gets knocked out by a Mugger people would freak out.
That is why I like the term Archeotypes, sometimes they can be more interesting than the original. Take Apollo (Authority) or Hyperion (Supreme Power), I found them a lot more interesting than Superman because a lot more could be explored with characters who dont have that much baggage. And Superman, Batman, etc tend to be rehashes of previous mythological and historical figures.
That said as a big comics guy I find the Sentinels pretty original, I mean you can go super far in one direction and do something really original but that alienates the guys who want good old fasioned superhero beat 'em up fun.

I see your point. I was a Heroclix collector and player for a couple of years and during a tournament I won a match when one of my cheap characters, a thug, knocked out Black Adam because I rolled snake eyes. My opponent nearly had a coronary. “This is such crap! That could never happen in the comics!”… I did not reply, but thought to my self, yeah. this is a game, not a comic book.

Interesting! I never thought of the Huntress aspect. I thought of the Punisher angle, as well as sort of a Magneto’s kids kind of thing (Magneto fathered mutant children from a human woman, Citizen Dawn presumably had the non-powered Expatriette with another Citizen-type super). Our group just calls her “Chick Fury” because of the eye-patch and the guns.
Also, does anyone see much allusion with Mister Fixer? Ol’ Zen and the Art of Auto Repair seems pretty unique as far as I can tell (not that the other characters aren’t, I just can’t tell if there is a specific school of heroism that his character is inspired by).
Well he would have fit in perfectly in the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, that sort of mix of urban grit with eastern martial arts and philosophy. THAT… and Stick, daredevils mentor. And those two are a stretch, I find Mr. Fixer to be a really fun, unique character.
I definitely felt the TMNT influence, but I didn’t know if that was the feel of his character versus actual inspiration. I didn’t think of Stick! Now that I think of it…Iron Fist has a bit of that East vs. West stuff going on. I’ve never read any of his comics, but it’s something that just came to mind.
