The final expansion is nearing. After Villains of the Multiverse, it looks like there will only be one or two expansions to the Sentinels of the Multiverse card game as we know it. This last expansion will probably have a different style of gameplay like Vengeance and feature the ultimate big bad of the whole game.
But who is the final boss?
Christopher has mentioned that there are hints throughout the cards about this culminating event. Things will go down. Someone will die (Ra?). The status quo will not be quo. Here’s what I think.
We know that at some point Voss has disappeared. And with Wrath of the Cosmos things have been getting very cosmic. There is huge underlying theme of whole species getting annihilated in the game. It began with Tempest and his people and is now being revisited with the Deadline and the Enclave of the Endlings.
For starters, we know Deadline is trying to throw Earth back into the Stone Age in order to prevent some kind of calamity similar to the one that engulfed his homeworld and countless others.
Secondly, on the Enclave card Hall of the Terminarch, we see a giant green multi-armed lady holding up Legacy and Black Fist, who has been pointed out to be a young version of Mr. Fixer. The flavor text reads: “Jansa Vi Dero knew she would have a time with this young race, but not yet. Still they persisted in meddling with the affairs of the Endlings. They would learn.”
The Terminarch is coming at some point to deal with Earth. However the event pictured perhaps takes place in the 70’s due to the Black Fist’s outfit. It could be approaching “Terminarch Time”.
This apocalyptic moment has also been hinted at in K.N.Y.F.E.’s bio where she left F.I.L.T.E.R. after her superiors refused to acknowledge a really important and imminent threat to the Multiverse.
But it’s highly doubtful that the Terminarch is the final boss herself. She’s already a 25 hp target in the game. That doesn't however proculde her from working for a world-ending multiverse-shattering master.
The biggest clue of all is probably a different character from Wrath of the Cosmos. Whereas an endling and a terminarch both refer to the last surviving member of a species, the word progeny means offspring, product, or outcome. It is Progeny whose mysterious origin and destructive purpose should raise the most eyebrows. Unlike the other WotC villains, in the artwork he clearly appears to be headed straight for earth. I surmise that Progeny’s mission is to wipe out the planet’s heroes to prepare for the final Big Bad.
Who is this Big Bad?
The same being who destroyed Deadline’s planet, empowers Voss to enslave entire worlds, and enables the Terminarch to collect the endlings. The final expansion will mostly likely shake up the core game by taking place solely on Earth without modular environments. It will simulate one big battle with the Big Bad. Of course, he or she will have lots of lieutenants and components to take down in the process. Helpful aids like incapacitation may no longer be allowed. As we saw in the Bloodsworn Colosseum with hero favor, there will be a different set of win conditions than simply knocking out the villain’s HP. Instead the goal could be to salvage most of Earth and its population from total destruction.
