So somehow I was able to lay down 9 Plains before I put down my frist Island. Just the odds of that blow my mind. With most other decks I would have lost but when you combine Pacify, Ghostly Possession and Spirit Mantle you have a very defensive, stalling deck.
Do you guys have any weird luck stories?
I have a hard time remembering all the bad rolls from before college when we used to play RPG’s (lots of critical failures ending up in lifelong injuries) but I do remember my ability to roll 111 again and again in risk.
Yeah, in college (~1990) one of the guys playing in my 2nd Ed AD&D campaign programmed his HP calculator to do his character’s to hit and initiative rolls. At the time, initiative was d10 and the lowest roll went first (and we counted 0 as 0, not 10, so that was the lowest we could roll). His character always used a bow, and he had three shots with it. The first time he showed me the program, he hit the button and it displayed “0 20 20 20”. I glared at him >:( as he fumbled saying, “No, really, it’s random.” :-[
And every roll after that was random - we have no idea why “random” was “perfect” on that first roll he showed me.
But it was hilariously bad luck on his part, as I nearly didn’t let him use it.
Recently, when introducing my core gaming group to SotM, we decided to play our first game against Omnitron vs. the Freedom Five. Omnitron top-decked both Electropulse Explosives and we had almost no damage dealing cards in hand. We lost on the third round.
Fortunately, everyone wanted revenge and the second time the decks cooperated.
We had a game against GloomWeaver where… uhm… I guess I can’t say the details, but we had five heroes, and the first card played resulted in everyone taking 8 points of damage each on the first villain turn.
Of course, that’s where the bad luck ended. We nearly got a flawless victory (if not for Fanatic and NightMist…).
Game of Pandemic a few weeks ago. 4 players. First player’s turn pulled up an Epidemic, which, due to the initial setup (three neighboring cities started with lots of counters), resulted in us immediately being hit with more than 8 Outbreaks - game over. Second player never even had a chance to start her turn… :o
We had a similar game of Pandemic. We were using the virulent strain thing from the expansion. The first player got an epidemic that makes all outbreaks count for 2. Between his turn and the next player’s turn, we hit 8 outbreaks, and I never got a turn.
Any time you play with Father Dagon as the herald there is a chance that you will generate a monster surge before the first turn, if this gets generated on Devils Reef the monsters have a chance of jumping into the vortex and filling up the Deep One track waking up the Great Old One, if your Old One is Azathoth you just lose as soon as he wakes up with no fight. The chances of actually hitting this combo are insane though.
Yeah… Arkham Horror has a great many of those glitches. Father Dagon can do a lot with his extra mythos pull. Zhar is responsible for a lot of wackiness as well. Eight players often get screwed by the “maximum gates open” rule. The Deep One track is sometimes volatile, too.
But hey, if that happens… try again! You already set it all up, right? Just redraw starting equipment, maybe investigators, and pull a couple new Mythos cards. Or hey, if you’re lazy, mulligan the Mythos draw. “Okay. We lost that game. Next?”
Yeah, with Arkham I have this horrible conflict bertween wanting to expand the game and not wanting to make it more complicated… for the most part I keep the action in Arkham itself, without hearalds, and without too many crazy addons.
I lovingly place all the crazy addons around the table, even when I know they’ll never be touched. I did finally quit using the Kingsport board, though.
Played of game of Anima a few days ago and stopped a wagon transport that contained something supernatural inside of it. I for one was all for opening it, but everyone else said no. Eventually I was the only one left watching it as everyone else went to town to get some more information. So I started to get bored as there wasn’t much for me to do so I decided I would open the wagon. After I had opened it a beast came rushing out and the battle commenced. Now I had a shinigami scythe so really all I had to do is be the first one to hit and that sucker would probably be dead.
Now I did roll the higher initiative but my attack roll a way under rolled and thus missed and the enemy had a chance to attack and scoreda critical on me. It repeated on the second round as well. After those first two hits I was down to just 1 HP so it was now or never. Finally my luck began to change as I swung my scythe and managed to rip his soul right of him and thus lived to tell the tale.
