I run monthly challenges for Sentinels over on Boardgamegeek (see https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/182459/sentinels-multiverse-monthly-challenge-geeklist for the megalist) and have decided to run some of my impossible mode ideas over here to see if these scenarios are actually beatable. This is a direct lead-in from the challenge issued by Craig earlier about using certain heroes to beat Progeny. These are designed to be rough- let's see if you can actually win the fights! Craig also said this sounds like a fun idea to publish here as well.
Before we get to the rules, feel free to sign up on BGG for the challenges. they are fun. Currently we are wrapping up our monthly challenge on Rook city, but Infernal Relics is next. We also have a year-long grudge match challenge going on.
the rules: you may ONLY use the heroes/villains/environments listed. After all, it's supposed to be rough!
Please mention in your comment if you would like this as a BGG thread to make it easier to run. That's fine by me, I run the monthly challenges for sentinels there anyways.
Challenge #1:
Villain: La Capitan, Advanced Mode
Environment: Time Catacylsm
Heroes:
Omnitron X, The Sentinels, and Absolute Zero. No promos allowed.
Can you beat La Capitan with this team??????? Post your results below!
Challenge #2:
Villain: Ennead, Advanced Mode
Environment: Megaopolis, Freedom Tower, or Mobile Defense Platform- your choice
Heroes: Parse, Wraith, and Legacy. No promos allowed.
Parse, Wraith, and Legacy (not Young Legacy) against the Advanced Ennead in any environment that only deals Melee/Projectile damage to villains (e.g. Megaloplis, Freedom Tower, or Mobile Defense Platform). We've done the math before, and it's technically possible to win before Shu comes out, but you have to be very, very, very lucky to pull it off.
Challenge #1: Villain: La Capitan, Advanced Mode, etc.
This is a winnable fight.
Result: Inconclusive due to time contraints
AZ came out slow with no NPCU or OMI for 6 rounds. Sentinels got Sentinel Tactics straight away, allowing Idealist's LHD (Lowest Hero HP damage) to be reduced by Block and healed by M.D. using damaging One-shots against Crew. OX was average. A second Round Fixed Point helped us get established, and then Temporal Thief caused her to flip with only 4 cards out of play. I built up a lot of Equipment and Ongoing and kept her in SAT mode.
I played for the long game, and I finally had to end it somewhere around Turn 10. Atlantean Throne Room was keeping everything suppressed and a big help getting rarer cards. OX was almost fully out. Durasteel Chains and Human Shield were eliminating enormous amounts of damage. NPCU was finally in play, so Split Across Time LC's Advanced redirection was throwing back fire at AZ who mullified it with feedback healing. This situation was finally letting OX strip cards out from under her due to so many instances of 2 damage per round. I did get lucky with AWOL Plunder, since it never hit the playing field, and instead was discarded by Crew searchers.
What I found was SAT LC was not doing much Ongoing destruction, so long as Mable was dealt with promptly. OX's Plating elimiates a lot of Crew H-1 and H-2 damage, with Medico and OX keeping up with the rest. Medico un-incapped Idealist and Mainstay, who both at times sacrificed for the team. The other Crew to eliminate fast is L'Epeiste. He does massive damages when OX gets his flood of Components and Ongoings out, and AZ makes that worse. You want Human Shield to take that hit and you want a saved un-Incap in hand to bring Mainstay back. I barely mention the Environment, since OX Bio-engineers it into oblivion. LC never touches it, so you can keep good or irrelevant environment in play and lose the bad. I was not worried about Plunder anymore, since OX had duplicate Ongoing Limiteds, AZ had an OMI, and Sentinels had duplicates and irrelevant cards soon to be in play.
If I had the time and didn't need to go home, I was already getting ready to switch to offense and had stripped her down to 6 cards under (from 13). I was still looking for Coolant Blast, and was looking forward to a pair of Focused Plasma Cannons hitting AZ.
I succeeded at this challenge and probably on luck on card play from La Capitan. She played a Plunder the first round and had AZ walk the plank which was fine since he didn't want to use his powers. She played Motley Crew before any crew members were in the trash, played All Together Now before the bait was in the trash, and only flipped once due to Temporal Thief. The turn Marble came into play was the same turn the boat got destroyed. The first turn after she flipped back Fixed Point came into play preventing her from getting a card under her and I took her out before she was able to flip a second time. The environment also wasn't much of a deal with OX keeping Bio-Engineering Beam in play and he ended the game with six components cards in play. The Sentinels were able to keep Sentinels Tactics in play and mostly were getting the AOE damage cards. AZ didn't start out with any of his modules but I made due with his Ongoings and a Focuesed Apertures.
Final Ho
OX : 14
Mainstay: 13
Idealist : 6
Doctor Medico: 13
Writhe: 12
AZ: 14
I mostly put Ongoings/ Equipment into play while La Capitan was flipped and she never got any other cards that destroyed them until she flipped back for her Advanced Rules. The only way this might have gone better is if OX had gotten Ablative Coating in play.
