Played my first game last night

Hey all!

I demo’ed the game at GenCon and really dug it a lot, so I picked up a copy. But we didn’t finish the demo there. My friends and I just played enough rounds to get the feel for it. Plus we were fighting Omnitron, which in hindsight was a bad villain for our first game ever. Last night was the first time my wife and I had a chance to sit down and play it since I got home, and we really liked it!

She was playing Fanatic and Ra. I was Legacy and The Wraith. We fought the Baron in Atlantis. It went quicker and smoother than I expected it to, which was a wonderful surprise. I was a little bit afraid that we’d get bogged down with learning rules for the first time, making the whole thing take hours. But not so! Everything was laid out simply and clearly. Our only moments of confusion we can chalk up to the whiskey we were drinking, not the cards.

So I just wanted to weigh in real quick and add my approval! You guys made a really fun game that I’m going to be taking to a lot of parties. It’s full of style and character and lots of great artwork. Kudos to you! I’m looking forward to picking up whatever expansions you have available next year.

Thanks!

Rob

PS: Thank you for putting the whole game in one box and not making me go out and buy boosters. That’s excellent.

Good job playing your first unguided game with two characters each! I’m glad to hear it’s so easy to pick up.

Thank you so much for the feedback! We’re very proud of the game, the mechanics, the characters . . . all of those things, so it’s always very comforting and encouraging when other people like them, too!

As to the game being in one box, this is because we want to make the sort of games that we’re likely to buy. Any expansions we have will be big, worthwhile, and not at all necessary to keep playing and enjoying the original game. Additionally, we should have an official storage option for the game AND its expansion within the first year, if all goes according to plan.

Thanks again for your kind words. They mean a lot.

I thought the characters were cool from the beginning, but I’m just now getting around to reading the backstories. They make a BIG difference. I’m starting to love these characters.

Us too

In a video interview at Chicago Comic Con, I was asked who my favorite super hero was, and who my favorite super villain was. I had to think, as they used to be other characters from other properties, but I wasn’t being “marketing guy” or at all facetious when I said “Absolute Zero” and “Citizen Dawn”.

The only thing I might change, in retrospect, would be that my favorite is actually Fanatic. But it’s so hard to choose!

That’s one of the things I love most about SotM. It’s a lot more fun and easier to get really invested in the game and characters when they have such cool, fleshed out stories.

I concur. When we started the process, it was just to make a good game, but the characters took on a life of their own and I do love them all now.

Same here! That was one of the things that always keeps me from loving other character based non-RPGs (e.g. Arkham Horror) - the characters don’t interest me so when I play the game it’s beevolant playing a game, with SotM you get to play out part of a story (so much of the RPG fun of 7th Sea).

I still need to read the backstories. I look forward to it! Last night I played Tempest and Bunker for the first time. Tempest can seriously whoop some butt! Big fan! My wife ran Haka and The Visionary, and we felt a little lost with Visionary. She seemed to be able to do a lot to mix up the Villain deck, but not much to really affect battle. Still, it was only our second game, and we were against Citizen Dawn. So I’m sure we’ll figure it out.

She’s got a couple of cards that can do decent damage in the right situation, but really she’s a deck manipulator. She’s fantastic for stuff like making sure the Environment and Villain decks don’t both smack you down at the same time, and she can help the other heroes build up/rebuild after having stuff destroyed.

Christopher and I are actually of the opinion that The Visionary is probably the most powerful character in the game, but she has an unusual and (generally) low-damage play style that takes a bit to learn and will not be to every player’s taste.

I should probably sit down and go through each deck sometime and get a better idea of how each character works. That would make it easier to choose, and to suggest characters when I show the game to new players.

Just looking through cards really doesn’t give you an idea of how they play (unless they are simple characters). Actually playing a game or two gives a completely different perspective than just reading what the cards say.
