PVP "Training Room" fun

Has anyone else tried Competetive matches, two teams of heroes vs each other with an environment deck thrown in for fun?

We've been doing it (more for fun and testing than competition) for a bit and it works pretty well with only some minor changes.

The opposing team is counted as non-heroes and Villain targets, your team is heroes for your cards.  Hero cards that destroy ongoing are treated as destroying ongoing and equipment.  A few cards have forced us to make some interesting rulings, but most work pretty well, while a few are just pretty worthless.

Environment cards treat the teams as both heroes and villains, so if they hit only heroes, all heroes are targets, if they hit only villains, all heroes are targets.

*For one player may discard. . . enviro effects, we alternated between highest to lowest to lowest to highest giving each player the choice, if you said no, you couldn't change your mind, the order of choice was up tothe lowest (whether to go first or last) it helps balance the play a bit more.  Rook city was rough, some cards we had to change a bit to make it work.

So far:

2v2 Wraith and Fixer were sick, Smoke grenades, pipe wrench and driving Mantis made for some hard to damage heroes.

Having Crono put bounties on you is disconcerting.

The Scholar is annoying.

3v3 got tedious and hard to manage with just two of us playing (though we did have tankier, more complex teams).

If anyone else has been playing PVP style add your thoughts, if you haven't, give it a try.  Then come add your thoughts.

I've played 1v1, Bunker vs Tachyon, with double starting health, set in the realm of discord (which has become our testing setting, I think mostly because everyone enjoys it). That was surprisingly fun. Like you said, we ended up making some interesting rulings on the fly, for example, we had just for fun, if one of your card says hero targets, it only works for you, but if it refers to players, it works for both. We also ruled heroes had to be of equivalent complexity, at least until we had some solid rules down.

Tachyon managed to pull out the damage just before Bunker (it was literally down to the last play) and watching Tachy's player get paler as cards were stuck under the omnicannon was entertaining.

I think I might try team PvP next.

Did some 1v1v1 action.

It is surprisingly fun and surprisingly well balanced (for the most part).

I mean, AZ crushes Ra, unless Ra turns all damage fire, and Legacy with Next evolution can crush anyone that only does one type.  I can't imagine AA ever winning, but then in our 1v1v1 Visionary won over AZ and ExPat, everyone got great draws, Visionary rocked two Cocoons, and wrest the mind on an enviro target (silver gulch), then ended up winning because she got decoy when everyone was low and blew up the wagon.

It was insane, and was much more fun than strategicly balanced, but it's a good time.

1v1v1 helps balance the fight as the strongest is also most likely to get beat down.  (AZ and Vis ganged up on Expat quickly, she had a great start.)

So far

1v1v1

Visionary over Expat and AZwrath, environment deck/cocoon was huge for vis.

Haka over Omnitron-X and Bunker, you'd think that would be a massacre, but Bunker did really well, but lost to HoB, hard to counter that, sadly Omni was going after me hard so I couldn't make sure Haka was toast.

Crono over Fanatic and Scholar, Scholar was thwarted by bad draws and an unfriendly environment, otherwise the game never would have ended.  Environment tipped the game a lot, with different environment anyone could have won.

2v2

Unity and X over Fixer and Wraith, Smoke bombs and driving Mantis carried the day till Omni got bio-beam, Then the bots won the day.  There was a lot of platform getting reduced one and redirected by mantis only to be eaten by stealth bot, who got healed a lot from innervation and inspired.

Legacy and Ra over Unity and X, tried the robot team again, Omni got fire resistance and reactive, Unity got stealth bot, but couldn't keep stealth alive this time and died, while Legacy tanked all the energy damage with lead from the front and next evolution.  Bots never got going, but the fight was still pretty balanced.

Wraith and Fixer over Bunker and Visionary, trying out some house rules on bunker that sped up his build, but visionary (despite being my favorite hero) did nothing.  Almost all our damage was taken out by Smoke/Mantis (Jack handle was involved too) and we didn't have any ongoing/equip destruction, so it was kind of pathetic how badly I lost.

1v1

Ra over everyone but Legacy and AZ.  Really.

Crono is really good too.  Fanatic crushes heroes without DR (aegis is a beast)
