Vengeance: Sentinels and Lava

If the hero group Sentinels doesn't destroy an equipment card, would each hero get hit with h damage or would the damage be spread amongst the 4 heroes? If the latter, then can the player spread the damage anyway he sees fit? For example, could he put 3 damage on one of the heroes and 1 on a different hero?

Thanks,

Bill

If it's one INSTANCE of damage, like that, it has to go to one target. So, nope, can't split up instances of damage. Ever.

Reasoning being, if you could split it up, then any time they took damage they could just split it up so they each took 1, and Block it out, so they'd be invincible. It's only individual effects that you can distribute, like Grandpa Legacy's power, Kismet's Jinxes, and Infections.

I can't wait to get Vengeance and play the Sentinels.

I'm confident playing them cannot be as confusing as trying to figure out how they work from the forum posts about them.

The rulebook actually brings up Infections. It says one member of The Sentinels will recieve Infection, but the entire team is counted as Infected for Plague Rat's flip. So that hero will recieve the damage from Infection.

right. That's what I meant... you get to pick which one's infected.

Long story short, whenever an effect references a "hero," you can pick any of the 4 (grandpa Legacy could use his power on the Sentinels, have Idealist regain an HP, and Mainstay Block; one of Kismet's Jinxes goes in front of the team as a whole, and when it triggers (you play a card) you can pick which one hits themself for one), but if it says hero TARGET (marsquake: deal each target 2 melee damage), that would apply to each of them individually. Not just 1 of them. Proverbs and Axioms is a unique example, in that it specifically says "Each Hero CHARACTER CARD may deal damage and use a power or regain 2 HP," so each one has to make the choice on their own.

I always wondered about that wording…it seemed awkward before, but now - well, that gives me a reason to be VERY excited about playing Scholar and Sentinels together.

Does anyone know how Embolden works with The Sentinels?  It states "Play this card next to a Hero Character Card.  That Hero may use an additional Power during their Power Phase."  I could either see it working similar to the timing on Fixer's Rod of Anubis/Overdrive combo works (use the Rod first, then you can "Strike" twice), in the respect that if you don't use the Emboldened Hero's Power first, then you may use it after another Power (for instance, an Emboldened Dr. Medico "M.D."s, but only after Mainstay "Block"s).  The other option is that since each hero only has one "Power," then Embolden doesn't provide an additional power (which would be a bummer...)

They are, collectively, only 1 hero. They don't get 4 powers per turn. So you'd put it next to, like, The Idealist. Then The Sentinels may use 2 powers during their power phase, so you could do Block and M.D. if you wanted, as long as you follow the normal rule of only using each power once. The Overdrive loophole is exclusive to Overdrive specifically.

As long as it ends with Embolden beefing up The Sentinels, then I'm happy with the ruling!  Have we confirmed that with the Vengeance rulebook or Christopher?

Do the Sentinels have a Legacy Ring -type card?  I want to know if it's possible to get them up to 4 powers per turn with Embolden and, say, Pillars of Hercules.

They have an additional Power card that requires that they do damage in order for the additional Power to be accessed.  It's not hard at all to utilize it (The Idealist's Power deals 2 Psychic damage, for instance).  We had a a game with that and Embolden on the field.  It was quite an impressive display!

Or the fact that most of their One Shots do damage as well, getting you to hit a bunch of targets with a One Shot (or one target really hard), use a power, then get your normal power phase. That card rocks.

It's not an official ruling, but it's based on the exact wording of the Infection interation (they count as one hero, and if a card is put next to one of their character cards and specifically says it affects "that hero," it affects the group as a whole; for times when it deals damage, or lets them deal damge or regain HP, you pick one of them. For passive effects (being "Infected," having a shaky arm), it affects all of them.

Infection only deals damage to the Hero Character Card it is attached to. So whichever member of The Sentinels recieves the Infection will be the one that takes damage every round. The entire time is considered Infected for the purposes of Plague Rat's flip mechanic.

So the question then is, similar to Infection, does it have to be the same person that takes damage from Embolden every round, or can you change it up?  Based on how Infection works, I'd say it has to be specific.

Edit: To be specific.  My theory is that the same Sentinel has to take damage each round from Embolden, but it doesn't have to be that Sentinel's specific power that gets used extra.  Thoughts?

id agree with you.

So, they decide who gets to use powers as a group, but you specifically deal damage to the one next to the card. Seems reasonable.

Infection on The Sentinels is actually specifically addressed in the Vengeance rulebook. It works like you said (and there are a few more details). I guess you're saying it's a cosequence of the other interactions.
