Hi! We played our first games of Sentinels last night and wanted to make sure we interpreted something correctly.
On the “Play a Card” phase I can take a one-shot attack card and put it into play, but not use that power on the “Use a Power” phase, thus saving it for a later round (when I might be blocked from playing a card or want to get an Ongoing into play and still attack).
If a card is labeled, “One-Shot,” it takes effect as soon as you play it, and is then immediately put in your discard pile. This acts as your “Play a Card” phase, and doesn’t affect your “Use a Power” phase at all. The good news is that you don’t have to use your Power phase to use One-Shots, just your Play phase. The bad news is that you can’t save them for later, but must use them immediately.
If, however, you play an ongoing or equipment card that says, “Power: …” in the text, then that stays in play, and you can use that power during any and all subsequent Power phases (assuming no card says otherwise).
As far as I know, there is no such thing as a One-Shot Power.
Slender Troll’s description is accurate - technically, there’s no such thing as a One-Shot Power.
Hopefully this won’t confuse the issue, but there are Powers that cause the card to be destroyed (i.e., put in the discard pile), so it’s only useable once, but it isn’t a One-Shot - the card stays in play until that Power is activated (or something else gets rid of it). 8)
Another question, so if I have an ongoing power that can be used for damage, like Tempest’s hurricane, and put it in play, is that also the power I use that round?
When my next turn comes and I have a power to play, is the ongoing hurricane the power I must use? Or can I not use it that round and use a different power, but keep the hurricane in play?
Any card you play that has a “Power” section simply adds to the list of available powers you can use. There is no obligation to use the power on a card you just played, and there is no obligation to use powers at all.
