Wrest The Mind, yet again and "Target"

Greetings all, on wrest the mind in the final sentence does “The Visionary deals 3 psychic damage to that target” refer to the Target this card is played on, or does it refer to “may redirect that damage to another target.”?

In other words, does it hurt the card that Wrest the mind is played on, or does it increase the amount of damage that card is throwing? Thanx

For reference:
“Play this card next to a Target, other than a Hero or Villain Character Card. Whenever that target deals damage, you may redirect that damage to another target. If you do, The Visionary deals 3 psychic damage to that target and 3 psychic damage to herself.”

Wrest the Mind causes a second card (target) to do damage to a third card (another target) and then does 3 psychic damage to the second card (that target).

Related question with regards to Wrest the Mind and the target it can effect.

Can Visionary redirect the damage the attack is doing back onto itself? I see nothing on the card or errata that would indicate not. Cinematically, if Visionary is taking control of the attacker I can also see this making sense (since she ‘pays’ for the action by taking her own damage).

Practically, last night during a game in Atlantis, Visionary played Wrest the Mind against the Kraken. Rather than the Kraken attacking and damaging the lowest HP target per the Kraken card, we ruled that Visionary was able to redirect the hit back on the Kraken itself for 8 points of damage (5+3) after taking the 3 psionic damage to herself.

Correct?

Correct.

Not entirely correct. You noted that the Kraken deals itself 8 damage after Visonary deals herself 3. More accurately, the Kraken deals himself 5, then Visionary deals the Kraken another three, then Visionary deals herself 3 (if I’m remembering the wording correctly). This matters not only for damage modification, but also, if the Kraken is destroyed during one of the first attacks, I believe Wrest the Mind is also destroyed, cancelling out any further remaining damage listed on the card.

I was under the impression you could not redirect the damage done to the target wrest the mind is attached to…

“Play this card next to a Target, other than a Hero or Villain Character Card. Whenever that target deals damage, you may redirect that damage to another target. If you do, The Visionary deals 3 psychic damage to that target and 3 psychic damage to herself.”

So the another refers to the one that would be dealt damage not the one that’s dealing it?

Well, it depends on which target is being referenced by “another target.” As much as it could be read that the referenced target is the target Wrest the Mind is attached to, the referenced target could also be the target that was to initially be dealt damage.

Example, Wrest the Mind is played on The Kraken. The Kraken is to deal 5 Melee damage to The Argent Adept. The Visionary decides to utilize Wrest the Mind. Based on the interpretation of “another target,” either the damage cannot be redirected to The Kraken (as it has to be another target, not The Kraken who is “the target”), or the damage cannot be redirected to The Argent Adept (as he was initially to be the one to take damage, now “another target” must take damage).

Personally, I would be inclined to believe the second interpretation, as it makes more sense.

Without WtM on it the Kraken picks a target and the damage is dealt.
With WtM on it the Kraken still picks a target but the damage is redirected to another target and the damage is dealt.

Another target means “Not the original target” and as TheJayMann rightly points out in his example, Argent Adept is the ‘original target’ of the Kraken’s damage, any target other than Argent Adept is a valid target… including the Kraken. The card targeted by WtM has no bearing on the target that the damage is redirected to, they are two entirely separate targeting effects.

That makes sense, thanks.
