My dad was playing Absolute Zero and had Focused Apertures (Increase cold damage dealt by Absolute Zero by 1) and Null-Point Calibration Unit (When Absolute Zero would take cold damage, he regains that many HP instead). We had Cramped Quarters Combat in play (Change the type of all damage to melee damage....)
He wanted to use AZ's power (AZ deals himself 1 fire damage or cold damage).
What we're unclear on is:
1. Does the +1 cold damage take effect? (We weren't really sure on this one.)
2. Does he heal from this? (We thought NO since it was converted to melee damage.)
PS. I bought this game a couple of weeks back, but only got a chance to play it yesterday. Really wish I had bought this one instead of Legacy many months back. SotM was a lot of fun and I really felt like I was actually doing something instead of just playing my cards "in the right order."
It does not get +1 for the cold damage as it is melee now. Changing Abz's damage to anything but Fire or Cold really shuts him down unless he has Thermal Shockwave out. As anything he does he'll deal himself damage for no reason.
Playing games with my family is fun (I'm in my mid-40s and my folks are in their early 70s.), but when there's a rule that's a bit unclear, my dad really wants to make sure we're playing it correctly while I like to make a quick decision, move on with the game, and see if I can find the answer later.
Another thing to watch out for with Ab'Zero is if Ra is in the party - Imbued Fire would be somewhat unhelpful for Ab'Zero since all his damage is converted to fire and therefore he can't hit himself with cold damage in order to heal himself. On the other hand, as long as ra doesn't play Imbued Fire he can nuke Ab'Zero repeatedly and cause loads of other effects to go off that way :).
That may be true for Cramped Quarted, but I was going for if for whatever reason his damage is changed Thermal Shockwave would have to be the way to go. Granted everything that changes the type of damage also increases said type by 1, so it's not quite an issue right now.
