Alien goes crazy, attacks ally

The situation: The final turns of a Mad Bomber Blade game, set in the Realm of Discord.  Argent Adept, Fanatic, and Tempest were hanging on, looking for a way to win.  It didn't look good.  Argent Adept led the pack with 5 hit points, Fanatic and Tempest were at 2.  Our collective stuff totaled one Alacritous Subdominant, and one Aegis of Resurrection.  Maniacal Death Ray Blade had a hearty 40, along with a Living Force Field and a Backlash Field.  The latter was actually what had dealt the most damage to Tempest and Fanatic as they negotiated his first side as fast as possible.

Now, Tempest had a Ball Lightning, the first ongoing destruction we had found all game.  But he also had a problem.  Ball Lightning deals four damage to one target first, and Blade... could not be that target.  Tempest would die to the Backlash damage, and we wouldn't get rid of the ongoings.  When Argent Adept powered Alacritous Subdominant, I suggested something crazy.  I said we aim the damage at Argent Adept.  That way, he would not be the highest target when Blade fired up his Death Ray.  He would instead fire on Fanatic, who would shrug it off with the Aegis and then we could finish him the next turn.

They thought I was nuts, but they went with it.  Tempest took Argent Adept down to 1, and zapped the ongoings.  Fanatic lit Blade up with Wrathful Retribution for 28, and Exorcism for 2. Tempest Reclaimed a Lightning Slash for the next turn, and drew another, taking Blade down to 9 with Squall.  (And incidentally retrieving Wrathful Retribution for Fanatic, if she were going to get another chance to use it.)  The environment turned up... a Portal Fiend!  Irrelevant!

Then Blade went.  He blew through Fanatic's Aegis, as predicted, and then played two cards that didn't do any damage.  Tempest and Fanatic gleefully finished him off, exulting in the wake of a plan crazy enough to work.  There were so many things that could have gone wrong with that, especially given the environment.  I can't say that was ironclad strategy or anything, but it was sure as hell fun.

Wow, that's very cool, lol :D. Yeah, sometimes it is a good thing to nuke your friends. Ra and Ab'Zero is probably the most obvious example.

In a recent game as Fanatic, when nobody had any cards, Blade had a Force Field, and both Traffic Pileup and Hostage Situation were in play, I took myself out with Exorcism, reasoning that my Incapacitated abilities would be more helpful at that point.  They were, too!

I love situations like these, where counterintuitive plays pay off big.

Most excellent!

Very very cool.

Well, reckless acts of self-destruction for devastating effects ARE pretty much Fanatic's MO

Maybe Tempest and Argent Adept felt like they had it coming after being so cruel to Fanatic in the preview art for Shattered Timelines.

I LOL'd.
