Damage that destroys Constructs

I have a question that’s come up since I finally got the video game.

We know that, generally, (1) when an effect triggers, it interrupts other effects to take its own actions, and (2) cards remain in play while resolving their own destruction. Therefore, the way I’ve been playing the table top game, if one of Captain Cosmic’s Constructs (with an effect that happens when it takes damage) takes enough damage to destroy it, this is the order of operations I apply:

  1. Deal the damage to the Construct, removing all of its HP tokens.
  2. The Construct is in play and was dealt damage, so I trigger its effect and resolve whatever ensues.
  3. The Construct has 0 or fewer HP, so I destroy it.

The video game skips any Construct “on damage” effects. What rationale am I missing?

The destruction overrides the cards effect. A destroyed card can't have an effect. Consider that things like Exploding wagon explicity say they stay in play after destruction to have an effect as an exception to the rule

That’s the way it is. It is similar to Haka at 1 hp hitting Baron Blade at 1 hp with Backlashfield out. Haka Wins.

I might be able to explain it, but others kight disagree. The sinple answer is damage triggers don’t happen when something is destroyed, since it is destroyed.

Wasn't there some recent discussion on this point?

So, essentially, I forgot to add an event which would interrupt all the effects that we were previously resolving: the card’s destruction. The destruction of the Construct interrupts its attempt to execute its on-damage effects, and then once it’s destroyed, it’s no longer there to do anything.

Exactly!

Yep, if the card says on destruction, then it stays in play whilst it's effect resolves.  If it says on damage, then it leaves before it's effect resolves.

So in order -

1. Card takes damage that destroys it.
2. Effects from the cards destruction resolve.
3. Card is destroyed.
4. Other effects on the card fail to resolve as it is no longer in play.

Added to that, Sustained Influence would not in this case let the card's effect still happen, because that counts as the card being played fresh.

Not to be a broken record, but this is why I hate playing Captain Cosmic. His constructs would be so much more useful if they could get an effect off when everything's taking 4 whatever damage.

Well he only has dynamic siphon and vitality conduit which trigger off of damage, for a total of six cards, so it isn't that detrimental.  I hate that his stuff gets wiped out too but it's not much worse than Unity with her bots when there a lot of damage hitting all targets.

If you have Destructive Response in play, you can trigger up to three constructs before they are destroyed.

The Constructs will all get destroyed, but at least it's something.

As long as you don't have Cosmic Crest out.

If you do, just destroy Cosmic Crest first.

Exactly.
