Editor’s Note 24

Interestingly "pinioning" means removing a bird's flight joint to remove their ability to fly, similar to declawing cats.

Just for clarity, per Meriam-Webster, “pinion” has three definitions:

Definition of pinion (Entry 2 of 3)

 noun (1)

1the terminal section of a bird’s wing including the carpus, metacarpus, and phalangesbroadly WING

2FEATHERQUILLalso FLIGHT FEATHERS

Definition of pinion (Entry 2 of 3)

transitive verb

1ato disable or restrain by binding the arms

bto bind fast SHACKLE

2to restrain (a bird) from flight especially by cutting off the pinion of one wing

Definition of pinion (Entry 3 of 3)

 noun (2)

1a gear with a small number of teeth designed to mesh with a larger wheel or rack

2the smaller of a pair or the smallest of a train of gear wheels

There are a variety of interpretations of how the name “Pinion” relates to her in that incarnation…

I'm glad they spoke a little bit about the passing of Stan Lee. You can tell how much of an influence he had on them by just looking at their game and characters.

There was no one else like Stan, and I don't think anyone will be able to ever take his place. At least not in our lifetime.

...yeaaaaah, I agree with those who thinks the self-awards are not a very tasteful idea. In that spirit, I think everybody should vote for The Food Podcast for every category.

I'm kind of disappointed that I never got answers to a couple of my OblivAeon follow up questions. I was wondering about a few story-meets-mechanics items:

  • If the heroes do nothing, OblivAeon flips through his booklet forms. Does this mean that the entity is getting weaker (though more dangerous) as it destroys timelines?
  • When Voss usurps OblivAeon's power, how character cards tells us that he "is now OblivAeon." Is this just for mechanics' sake? How much of OblivAeon's singular entity-ness does Voss inherit?

I’m sure the fans in the categories that are intended to award the fans for their input will appreciate your gesture.

I like the awards though I do hope they don't take up an entire episode on their own.

…says the guy who’s probably going to win 2 or 3 of them.

Making me blush

OK, I'm not the only one who's looking askance at the Awards plan.

Good to know.

No, I’m absolutely with you on this.

I honestly find it kind of off-putting that people are apparently against any attempt to have fun or increase people engaging with and talking about things.

That's not true; it's this particular idea that I don't like. Asking questions, Cosmic Contest, and the create-a-story episodes are all things that I like.

Those produce podcast episodes, but as of late there's generally been very little engagement with or discussion of said content of the podcast episodes after they come out. So I can't blame them for trying to encourage more of said engagement.

Also as I tried to point out but got ignored, I'll more bluntly say it seems kind of disingenuous at best to call the matter self-congratulatory when half the awards are actually about asking people to recognize the efforts of themselves and their fellow fans to ask interesting questions/produce interesting content of their own.

But when the other half finally asks, "What's your favorite thing we did?" that becomes self-laudatory.

Which, in many contexts isn't bad.  It's good to get positive feedback and learn what people like.  But there are better ways to do that than to give yourself awards based on criteria you set.  Going on a tangent--joking or not-- about turning it into an 'award-winning' podcast by giving themselves awards certainly didn't help me jump on board.  It sounded much like the guy from the MyPillow commercials, who founded and runs the National Sleep Foundation specifically so he can give the MyPillow an A+ rating.

I think a few people are digging in way too deep on what is just meant to be silly.   If you don’t like the idea then don’t participate in the submissions.  If they get a lack of submissions I see that as getting a point across more than any comments here will accomplish.

What Powerhound said.

Many of us have already spent time of our own free will talking about which episodes and questions we liked best on a number of occasions, so to me this idea just is formalizing conversations many of us have already have had. I was expecting to have fun inviting others into that existing conversation, not be reading a wall of hostility.

It'd be one thing if people were just going, "meh this isn't just my cup of tea", but to have people sound like they're actively offended by people talking about something that doesn't interest them personally sends the very uncomfortable message that you think those of us who do talk about those things are doing something wrong.

And I mean to be fair, this is a thing that crops up in many geek fandoms. The phrase/thought, "this isn't my cup of tea but I accept it's OK if you folks have fun with it" is something I wish people would pick up in general.

As one of the people doing the digging, I actually agree with this. I don’t think Christopher and Adam have an egotistical bone in their bodies, which is one of the things that makes this podcast so fun to listen to. Ultimately, I feel like this is meant in good fun, and the question-based awards demonstrate this.

I don’t think you’ve run into a “wall of hostility;” you’ve rather encountered a moderately phrased opinion that it seems kind of strange for Christopher and Adam to ask us to give them awards. Nobody here has said anything specifically opposing the idea of recognizing the best questions from the community. Heck, nobody has expressed opposition to the idea of a poll on what our favorite episodes were, in order to give C&A feedback. It’s the awards for podcast episodes specifically that rubs some of us the wrong way. C&A themselves even leaned pretty hard into the idea that the awards are self-aggrandizing.

Jeysie, you said that you were hoping for this thread to take a different direction. Instead of criticizing some of us for the topic of our opinions, why don’t you go ahead and start that conversation you wanted to have? What’s your favorite listener question from 2018?

Unfortunately, my favorite things that I think of right away happened in 2017. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you feel saying that even awards meant to praise the fans should still be protested with fake nominations is a “moderate” view… or that giving protest nominations to a harmless thing meant for fun you could have easily just ignored is an appropriate “moderate” response, I’m not sure I’d want to deal with you when you’re being extreme.

The actual moderate opinion would have been “eh, I admit this isn’t my thing but I recognize other people find it fun so I’ll leave you to it”.

Since the nominations are “pick what your favorite episode in each category is” i.e. a poll of what your favorite episodes are according to each criterion, I admit I’m not seeing what the difference is.

Instead of criticizing me and Powerhound for giving criticism of folks stating your opinions in off-putting and alienating ways, why don’t you go ahead and give your opinion in a constructive, non-alienating way by saying what form you’d want to see instead for a poll of favorite episodes?

I mean, I didn’t criticize TakeWalker or Warlock in the same manner because TakeWalker gave various detente responses and Warlock had a reasonable point. So I’m certainly willing to hear your thoughts along the same lines.

I'm not going to vote but I'm hoping Cult of Gruum wins, because man I'm still laughing about that one. Also I have no idea if that was in 2018 or not.
