Epic battle vs. Cosmic Omnitron

Last night we had a game with Expatriette, Young Legacy, Wraith, Mr. Fixer, and Nightmist versue Cosmic Omnitron (in the Tomb of Anubis), and it was epic.

Omni started out with a pair of Disintegration Rays and an Interpolation Beam, but between my Tactical Shotgun and Young Legacy's Atomic Glare those components got junked pretty quickly and we thought this would be a cakewalk. He even flipped a Technological Singularity (destroy all equipment and deal proportionate damage) on his first turn while we had nothing out! Wraith's first play was Infared Eyepiece but there were only a couple Drones on top. Still: this is friggin' Omnitron, right? No biggie.

Then he flipped into Dropship mode. And spat out three drones in a row before landing on Adaptive Plating Subroutine; not a big problem since we had a good mix of damage, but always a nuisance. And then zapped three of us for 4 damage each, before his Drones (two Attack drones and the one that does damage equal to its HP) added in more damage. That… hurt.

But we were still in this. I had plenty of guns and a hand full of ammo. Legacy was getting ready to set up "Lead from the Front" + "Next Evolution" to suck up a ton of damage, with a Legacy Ring in play to keep up the three-damage bursts. Wraith was doing what Wraith does, and was even able to tuck a Sedative Flechettes on the bottom of the deck so it wouldn't disrupt us. Mr Fixer and I were on Drone control while Nightmist became immune to damage for a while to stock up on cards. The environment was mostly a non-factor, although some Swinging Blades did cause some trouble before Wraith took them out and while setting up a Mega Computer to keep it in check.

We knew an Electro-Pulse Grenade was coming up from the Flechettes tuck, but Mr. Fixer had a Grease Gun ready for that and we were able to clear it before it could hurt us. But Omnitron was still shooting us all for a bunch of damage. Finally, Legacy got the combo together and things looked good, with Wraith tucking the other Technological Singularity to keep our equipment safe.

Unfortunately Omnitron was able to find its second Sedative Flechettes (partially thanks to some Terraforming) before Legacy's combo could do anything. We were hurt, and hurt bad. Liquid Nitrogen Rounds and Stun Bolts combined to hopefully keep some of the pressure off, but we were all pretty hurting. Nightmist was getting ready to set up with Amulet of the Elder Gods but had some other business that needed tending first. Drones and Components kept coming and we kept knocking them down, but Omnitron still had like 70hp. Wraith was able to intercept the other Electro-Pulse Grenade and send it to the bottom… but the bottom was getting awfully close. Smoke Bombs were deployed in an attempt to keep us standing and a double Stun Bot (with Targeting Computer) kept a lot of damage at bay, but things were looking grim.

Eventually, we reached a point where we knew exactly what the last three cards in Omnitron's deck were, and in what order: Sedative Flechettes, Technological Singularity (which would have single-handedly blown Wraith and Expat straight to hell), and Electro-Pulse Grenade. Not good.

And then… a plan formed.

I had drawn an Unload and had one of every gun available to me (save Pride) in play, so I was looking at a bunch of damage. Wraith had a crazy grip full of cards thanks to the Eyepiece and other effects, and had eight pieces of Equipment in play for a potentially massive Inventory Barrage. Nightmist had her Amulet in hand, and Legacy had just played Heroic Interception to make the rest of us immune to damage for a cycle.

"I… think we've got this," said Nightmist's player. And I saw where he was going. We had Wraith tuck the Singularity again, leaving Flechettes on top. Mr. Fixer busted out Bloody Knuckles to smash some bots with his Crowbars. And I really needed Nightmist to clear out the Adaptive Plating Subroutines so my Unload would be effective, but fortunately all of that card drawing while in Mistform had resulted in the anti-Ongoing/Environment spell and there was a three on top of his deck, so we even got rid of a nuisance Mummy in the deal.

Omnitron's turn: Flechettes. Four of us were immune to Damage, and the Smoke Bombs redirected the damage from Legacy (who was tied for lowest) to one of us (who were still immune to damage); then we lost the Interception, but that was fine. More shots were fired and we were all shaky, but that was it for his turn.

My turn: Unload, 9 damage to Omnitron and various drones weakened, if not destroyed.
Legacy's turn: Motivational Charge to recover us some HP and Atomic Glare; another 5 damage to Omnitron.
Wraith's turn: Stun Bolt x2; 6 more damage and reduced damage on Omnitron's next turn.
Fixer: batting cleanup on remaining drones.
Nightmist: Amulet, draw some cards and zap Omnitron for two.

On Omnitron's turn, with ~30 hp, it plays the EPG and zaps us again, but that's all it has in play thanks to Fixer and me.

My turn: Shotgun blast.
Legacy's turn: The ongoing that boosts her damage, then Charge + Glare combo again.
Wraith: Inventory Barrage for 16, sending Omnitron down to 14 hp.
Fixer: Another Crowbar Strike hits Omnitron and one of the Mummies (explicitly NOT the EPG).
Nightmist: Ready and waiting.

The Environment turn does everything on the board some damage (since the Computer is gone) and Young Legacy finally falls. Her sacrifice would not be in vain.

At the start of Omnitron's turn, the EPG goes off. Nightmist steps in front, and redirects ~14 damage back to Omnitron using the Amulet; Omnitron goes down, and the EPG fizzles before the rest of us get baked alive.

One hero down, and the rest of us at around 5 hp or less (Nightmist might have had as many as 9)… but we got there.

(Fortunately Cosmic Omnitron doesn't have the same "must destroy all Devices" clause as the original…)

That is pretty epic. It is funny, when a 'mystic hero" was anounced I was hoping for somebody who could bend the rules to solve problems, and that last minute redirect is an amazing example.
