Episode 87 of the Letters Page: Sentinel Comics Animated Universe, Phase Two (Part 2)

The animated Prime Wardens and Dark Watch shows. http://theletterspage.libsyn.com/episode-87-sentinel-comics-animated-universe-phase-two-part-2

I got confused and thought this was going to be the Extrasode for some reason. @_@

Man, poor Setback. :( I'm glad they mentioned the metaverse fan reaction to the Dark Watch show. I'm not surprised it was pretty negative. But like, if you can get through an episode of Pete Riske being a depressed alcoholic, if you can suspend your disbelief over... pretty much his entire character, it sounds like it was a great show. I mean, that's not the only thing they changed (it's sad the death of Mr. Fixer arc isn't given as much of a grand event status as it was in the comics and holy crap, I can evaluate this fake cartoon/comic book like it's real @_@), but it seems like the changes were worth the overall story presentation.

Do gotta love some Ra/Fanatic flirting, though. :D

After so many years of Marvel movies, you get used to the idea of stories from comics getting main points shuffled around and becoming either more or less important overall when they hit the TV/Big Screen.

I probably wouldn't have agreed with the change in Setback either, but at the very least it looks like he's straightened his life out after finding Expat and going through the death of Fixer.

I'm amused at how they had this cool idea of making the prologue of each Dark Watch episode be this POV thing, then immediately forget about it and use Mr. Fixer for episode 2, and in episode 3 have a bunch of stuff going on outside Matriarch's line of sight.

Also, how the heck would a TV show get launched if the pilot episode consisted almost entirely of Setback feeling sorry for himself for 40 minutes?

It sounds like it was an episode more about reminiscing so it wasn’t all sad.    Also, this is the third spinoff of a popular show so I’m it would have been given leeway.

Yeah, the pacing on those first episodes felt really off. Everything from Chapter I should be the first 5-15 minutes of the show, with chapters I-II-III easily fitting into a single episode.

I enjoyed the story, especially by the last four or so chapters when things really get going, but there are a lot of details that I'd change about it:

-Have the "Rescue of Expatriette" plot happen in the first episodes, so she can be an active member of the group for more episodes instead of being unconscious for most of the show.

-Or maybe change her entire role. It's weird how she's this amoral mercenary who hunts superheroes in her Freedom Five episodes, but right in Darkwatch she was already a crime fighter and in a relationship with Setback (who never mentioned it or talked about her "death" in his cameos). Maybe her subplot in the show could be about turning into a heroic figure who'll then form the Darkwatch and confront the Organization.

-Like most Marvel's Netflix shows, I feel like it would work better if it embraced more of it's format as a tv show, instead of trying to be a 9 hours long movie. The major plot could still be the same, but allowing some episodes to tell their own stories. Have episodes about the team fighting minor villains like Heartbreaker or explore more the characters.

-Also I'm a bit conflicted about that fight against the Chairman, because it's another time that the heroes have to be saved by the interference of a villain. It may help with the gritty mood of the show, but also feels like the team isn't capable of getting any major victory by themselves (that is not quickly negated). I personally would have Mr Fixer deal the final blow to the Chairman and then fall due to wounds/infection, with the Operative betrayal being simply staying away from the fight.

Unfortunately I don't have much to comment on the Prime Wardens, being mostly retellings of the original stories and all. The bit with Ra made me laugh out loud (perplexing all the others in the dentist's waiting room). Not a big fan of  the "heroes are tricked into fighting each other before joining up against the bad guy" plot, but everything else from the Freedom Five Vs Prime Wardens movie sound really cool. #YesAllVampires.

Wasn't just the early episodes.  When they're planning their attack on the Organization, it's basically 45 minutes of talking heads.  This show would have gotten panned right off the bat.  In real life they probably would have been canceled halfway through the first season.

I was amused at all the "alcohol" jokes.  I think Christopher knows about as much about booze as I do.

Not in the habit of taking hits off a six-pack of alcohol, are you? :)

Not at all.  Most of the stuff Adam was mocking Christopher for, I didn't even notice was wrong.  Although I did share in Chistopher's mirth at Adam being unable to come up with a list of plausible college classes.

Did they say that the Dark Watch episodes were 1 hour long (with commercials, so 45min of program)?

I was assuming they were 30min episodes, just like the F5 show... so with only 22min of episode, the amount of story they're talking about should work relatively well.

Yes, they did say that.  I don't think they could realistically get away with an entire "talking heads" episode regardless of length, but they opened with saying that Dark Watch was in a 1-hour slot.

I really enjoyed that story. I find it quite plausible for a happy-go-lucky character to become a depressed alcoholic. Seriously depressed people are often very good at hiding it.

I also noticed the pacing issues. But I was having too much fun to let it bother me.

Just getting to this, and I noticed that they turn Lillian Corvus into the hero PINION. These shows aired before OblivAeon hit the comics, right? So was this the first trial of the name Pinion?
