My consitent(ish) game group these days has a lot on our plate. The times that we do get a game or two in of SotM, it is about next to never when the VotM format hits the table as well. Maybe it was a need for something fresh, or maybe it was the allure of a good story, but we set up VotM for the first time in a long time, and it turned into a nailbiter.
The Story:
Captain Cosmic has gone missing. The Visionary, able to sense his fractured post-OblivAeon mind screaming out in pain and confusion, decides to enlist the help of her friends from the Freedom Five to track him down. They find the Captain being held in the funhouse at Madame Mittermeir's Carnival, a place designed to keep him in constant insanity. But Captain is not the only one on the guest list, and getting home will be extremely difficult with the master illusionist Glamour making sure that no one leaves this place, at least with their sanity still in one piece...
The Setup:
- Unleashed Visionary, Captain Cosmic Requital, and 1-3 other Freedom Five promo characters (we used FV Legacy and FV AbZero)
- Miss Information, Biomancer, and Ambuscade (with Glamour starting in play). Add Operative for 4 players, and Ermine for 5 players
- Madame Mittermeir's Environment.
Extra Rules:
Since Glamour is actually the main villain in this story and creating the illusions coming out of the other villain decks, the target Glamour is indestructable
The Game:
This was not as easy as we thought it would be. AbZero was a clear MVP dealing just about all the damage to everything with an early Twist the Ether and AoE damage. Legacy did his tanking thing and keeping the environment in check with his power. Judge Mental showed up from Miss Informations deck which was a double edge sword helping visionary and other villain damage. One of the biggest things was that Cap Cosmic didn't get off to a great start, with his power not pulling a lot or very useful constructs early, and the one turn where he got a ton, it triggered his self damage which sealed his doom. Biomancer was our focus target early as he just had a ton of targets out that the team couldn't deal with efficiently, but his damage reduction was hard for a while to get past. And since Cap had trouble getting constructs out, Operative had a lot of oppertunity to deal her damage to heros. It turned out to be a SUPER close game, where Legacy was the last one standing with 1 HP vs a lone Ambuscade at 3 HP and Legacy had Flying smash in his hand. But without any card plays from the other heroes incap abilities, we needed a dud to come out from the Environment, but it ended up being enough damage to incap Legacy without killing Ambuscade first.
Solid game overall though. It was our first time using that Visionary promo and the FV promos. Lot of fun, even in defeat.
