Minecraft

There used to be a thread about this somewhere but I think it's been buried beneath masses and masses of other threads (I looked through the first few pages of threads in this section and couldn't find it and I'm lazy) so I thought I'd start a new one.

So I have a Minecraft server. It's been running for a couple of weeks and as it has room for plenty of people I thought I'd see if anyone here was interested in joining. So far it's just me and Ja'Ph' who've been playing on it (though Belle Sorciere has been in briefly and my dad might join at some point when his new computer is sorted that can actually run it) and I thought it'd be nice if there were some people I could talk to and help out and stuff when he's not online.

The server is a modded server, not plain old unmodded Minecraft. It uses Resonant Rise so you would need to download the ATLauncher and get a share code from me in order to download the right selection of mods from the pack. You need a decent computer with 64-bit. I'm not remotely technical so I will be of no help whatsoever to anyone posting their computer specs and asking "is this okay?" ;). You'll also need the server address from me which I can give you along with the share code if you want to join. Note that you don't need to have actual Minecraft installed but you do need a Minecraft account, as the ATLauncher will ask you for your login details. Downloading a modpack is like installing a new instance of Minecraft and all keybindings will be the default, with many clashing as there are so many mods - I just put any keys I don't plan on using onto the Y key because I'm never gonna press that, and any keys I do plan on using onto keys that make sense.

My server has a whitelist so I would need your username in order to add you. I don't expect it'll happen, but if anyone makes any attempt at griefing (or otherwise deliberately attempting to mess with other playrs, break/steal their stuff, or anything else which would make the game less fun for them), I will just ban you, no questions asked, and you won't be allowed back in. I can check the server console to see who's been logged in and when so you have been warned! PvP is disabled so you can't hit other players (though if you do anything that causes an explosion then I imagine the blast would still hurt them), and the difficulty is on Easy. The server is a friendly one - find yourself a nice little corner away from the spawn point and set yourself up a base or something. I'm happy to help people build stuff if they need a hand and I can make everyone a free hang glider when they join (it's just sticks and leather, easy peasy :)) to make getting around and finding your perfect spot a bit easier :).

As I don't want stuff to be getting randomly destroyed by means beyond your control, there are a couple of mods/mod features which I made sure are definitely not on my server. First of all, Blood Moons have been disabled in the config. A Blood Moon is where, at dusk, a message in red reading "The blood moon rises…" will appear. For the duration of that night the world will have a red tinge to it and monsters spawn in much greater numbers than usual and are generally bigger pains in the arse (I think they can break down doors or something). Another thing I made sure not to download is Quivermob. There is a mod called Quiverbow which adds in a bunch of cool ranged weapons (bows and guns of various types) to the game. This is included. But Quivermob, which allows skeletons to occaisonally spawn wielding a random Quiverbow weapon, is most definitely not included. Skellies with rocket launchers? No thanks!

You will have to worry about Infernal Mobs, which is when creatures can sometimes spawn with a bunch of random modifiers like you get in, say, the Diablo games…so it might be a "life-draining spider of darkness" or a "ninja creeper of strength" or whatever. So you do still need to be careful. And of course, all the normal Minecraft mobs will be spawning as usual, as well as some new ones added by mods. Be careful if you go into the Nether, too.

So anyway, if anyone's interested in joining my happy-fun-building-stuff-and-exploring server, let me know either here or via PM and I can PM you the share code and server address. I can also give you more detailed instructions on how to get it downloaded and stuff if you're unfamiliar with modpacks or whatever. It does take a little while (a minute or two) for the game to load up whenever you try to log in but I tend to just leave it doing that in the background and check my forums or something while it's loading. I know it's done when I start to hear the music :).

I like the modded servers that make exploring more fun, so I'm curious what kind of mods are included. I've never been a fan of the tech or the magic stuff

There are a lot of mods in this one. Off the top of my head we have...

Tinkers Construct - Create a smeltery to easily double your production from ores as well as create alloys (all you need to make it is sand, gravel, clay, and some lava so it's a good starting point), also you can make some really cool equipment which you can name and give assorted upgrades

Magical Crops - Grow resources in plant form and also make some really uber armour and stuff

Botania - Make magical plants that do different things, such as kill monsters. Also you can make plenty of magical items that do various different things

Pam's Harvestcraft - Make a whole load of different types of food and drink, including (but by no means limited to) sausages, pizza, toast, ice cream, fruit juice, and chocolate

Applied Energistics - Create a computer in which to store all your stuff - it's like having one big massive chest and there is the possibility to create hand-held wireless thingys so you can access it remotely

Ender IO, Mekanism, and others - Create a bunch of different types of machinery for pretty much any purpose, including the means to double (or better) your resource production from ores

Thaumcraft - Magic-based mod with loads and loads of stuff you can do, including creating wands for the casting of magic spells, little golems that can do jobs such as plant and harvest crops, magical armour and other equipment, and a bunch of other stuff

Witchery - Use rituals to cast curses and stuff, turn yourself (or someone else) into a vampire or werewolf (with associated strengths and weaknesses), get yourself a Familiar, create poppets to protect yourself from effects. You can also create them to mess with other people but please don't on my server unless the other person is okay with it :P

Blood Magic - Another magic mod featuring the harming of many creatures and/or yourself in order to do stuff

Magic Bees - Breed different types of bee which can used to do stuff, though I'm not sure what as I've never gone into this one

Twilight Forest - Another dimension accessed by making a portal (like you do for the Nether only this portal is made in a very different way), where as the name implies it's always twilight and there are a lot of trees. Also cute bunnies, squirrels, birdies and other wildlife. And a bunch of rather large boss monsters to fight, as well as various dungeon thingys and stuff

Erebus - Open a portal to another realm which contains many horrible bugs :P.

Nether Ores - Find Nether equivalents of surface-world ores in the Nether (ie Nether diamond, Nether redstone) which can be smelted in a normal (or redstone) furnace to get two "normal" ore blocks for every Nether ore block. Be warned - mining ores from this mod displeases any nearby pigmen...

Statues - Create decorative statues of players out of stone or other materials

Carpentry (or Carpenter, or something like that) - Create carpenter's blocks, which are made of wood and can be right-clicked with any material (and many types of item) to take on its texture. You can also make stuff such as doors and fence posts which do the same thing

Chisel - Create a chisel which you can use to retexture blocks to make them look cooler

Bibliocraft - Make shelves on which you can store stuff, chairs you can sit in, tables you can put stuff on, and a few other bits and pieces generally made of wood

Decocraft - Create a whole bunch of decorative objects, including a grand piano, Chinese lanterns, a toilet, and a bunch of other stuff

And a whole load more mods that I can't remember :D.

I would play more but my computer does not like the modpack very much. :( Some awesome mods in there, though.

Yeah it's a bit of a shame it runs slowly for you :(. Still, at least it does work, even if not very well ;).

It does work, yeah. I will get back on soon. I think TSW's not keeping my attention atm.

When the Grasshopper (age 9.5) gets un-grounded from Minecraft this weekend, I may explore relevant stuff sufficiently for him to play there, if that's acceptable to the server owner. If you don't want to deal with folks needing to police themselves with a minor around, that's cool with me, too.

As I am the server owner (well, I pay for it - it's hosted elsewhere), that's fine by me ;). So far it's just me and my partner who play and we have a voice chat up permanently whenever we're both online anyway, so we'll still be free to inform monsters in our own words what we think of them when they do things that annoy us ;).

If you need any more info on the modpack I'm using (including specifics on any of the mods, though I've not looked into all of them yet) or on how to download it or whatever, just let me know :). You don't need to have normal Minecraft installed as this uses a separate launcher (you still need to log in with your normal Minecraft details, though). If you and the Grasshopper do want to join then PM me your Minecraft usernames at any time and I'll add you to the whitelist, and also send you the share code (so you download the right version of the modpack) and IP address for the server (so you can actually get in there once it's all installed and you've got the game loaded) :). I can provide more details instructions on how to get the ATLauncher and stuff if needed as well.
