Nemesis Bonus within The Sentinels?

I think it has been established that nemesis bonus applies when Operative hits Chairman, Enneads hit one another, even Finest Legacy hitting Newest Legacy.

I guess The Sentinels is no different.

Just wanted to confirm.

Yep. Each hero card in the Sentinels deck has its own nemesis icon, so if they were to hit each other, then it would trigger the nemesis bonus.

I ... think Infection would be an exception to this, because it would still be which ever one dealing damage to themselves (Ie, you have mainstay hit mainstay) - I guess you could choose to hit another hero, and gain the +1 nemesis but I don't think you'd want to (most of the time, who knows killing off one of your sentinels to change the Lowest Target may be necessary)

I'm laying in bed so I don't have the cards in front of me and I'm going off my memory of one read through of the Sentinels deck:

Dr. Medico has a card that turns all of his damage dealt into healing (Hippocratic Oath?). Does this occur before or after damage bonuses are applied?  Between the nemesis bonus and any potential outside bonuses it seems that if the latter is the case this would quickly make his base power irrelevant.

I think you'd change the damage to healing right at the point that damage would apply - after all, Ab'Zero's NPCU converts all cold damage received into healing, and if he's hitting himself with cold, you buff it first and then heal him for the buffed "damage". In the case of Doctor Medico, if he was the Infected member of the Sentinels and had his Oath out, I would presume that instead of hitting himself he'd actually heal himself every time the Infection went off. Cool :D.

No-one ever gets a Nemesis bonus against themselves, otherwise everyone who hit themselves a lot (Fanatic, Ab'Zero) would be constantly needing to add a +1 bonus to all their self-damage. I'm pretty sure you only get a +1 if you're hitting someone else who has the same Nemesis symbol as you (whether they're on your side or not - the Ennead get a bonus against each other, so I would presume the Sentinels do as well, though I'd not thought about it till seeing this thread just now ;)).

Since they are an homage to the Fantastic Four, and Johnny and Ben are constantly bickering and pranking each other, this is 100% appropriate.

I think this is a case where the recent order-of-operations ruling would apply: it's your choice whether to convert it to healing before or after the buff.

I believe this to be correct, but it's not actually what the Vengeance rulebook says, IIRC. I'll post the exact text when I have it in front of me.

So, because they're 3 males and 1 female, they're an homage? The FF reflect the four elements.

I also like an infection on Writhe when he has his signature card out, it’s like driving mantis.

Hmmm, I guess Writhe could be like Invisible Woman, Mainstay could be Thing,…

Is Dr. Medico the Human Torch?  I don't think they are.

However it could be true the members of the Sentinels bicker back and forth and prank each too.

Idealist i've seen is very much a Green Lantern (Blue Lantern Corp actually) homage

Her powers create objects of blue energy (Weapons, monsters, ect) and she is eternally hopefull (Idealist) - and the Blue Lantern Corp emotion is Hope.

Hmmm. Fairly certain this isn't the case…

it is not the case you are right. You can choose to apply redirection effects pre modifiers (like driving mantis) but not with damage/healing conversion. For AZ damage needs to "go through" to get the healing so all modifiers must be accounted for. OoO ruling only applies to simultaneous triggers/effects

They are a group of four individuals who are essentially a family, with one member who's a bit more of an outsider and one who's somewhat more juvenile and dependant than the remaining couple (Thing, Torch, and spouses Reed & Sue; Writhe, Idealist, and roommate HLPs Medico and Mainstay).  The sentinels's nemesis is La Capitan, who is an admittedly not super-obvious homage to Kang the Conqueror, one of the more persistent foes of the FF (Doc Doom is more squarely their nemesis, but was already co-opted as one of the inspirations for Baron Blade).  And as for elements, Medico is an energy being like Johnny, Mainstay is a "brick" who wields a metal chain, Idealist is a psychic who conjurers images out of thin air, and Writhe has fluidic shadow-stuff wrapped around him.  They can thus be identified with Energy, Solid, Vapor and Liquid, which is the more science-fictioney* translation of Fire, Earth, Air and Water.

  • As seen in Piers Anthony's Cluster series, and probably elsewhere.  Sentinels in general is a little more "sciency" than most comic universes; even Nightmist has a Lovecraftian bent which suggests that her magic is more of a psychic super-science that man does not and perhaps cannot fully understand, but which obeys certain rules that are internally consistent in their non-Euclidean way.  Gloomweaver is an extradimensional being from a universe with different physical laws that he can bring with him to empower his cultists.  Apostate claims to be a demon, but it remains unclear exactly where him and his servitor-creatures come from; fan theory suggests that the relics powering him and Fanatic might be products of ancient Atlantean super-science, which is also what Ra and the Ennead are empowered by (though it's implied that Anubis may be a real god after all).  This leaves only Argent, Akash'bhuta, the Naturalist, and possibly Kismet and Setback (and perhaps Anubis) as outright mystic forces which can't easily be equated to some form of superhumanly advanced technology.  On the scale of SF "hardness", I would say Sentinels is second only to Alan Moore's "science hero" universes published under the America's Best Comics imprint, where absolutely everything is put in Doc Savagey terms and "magic" is essentially nonexistent, with the exception of Promethea (who details it in such achingly precise terms, mostly derived from the Qaballah, that it might as well be just another branch of science, rooted in the powers of the mind and thus akin to psionics, which claims to be more science than magic, although it is admittedly arguable there).  The Big Two universes are much "squishier" about these things, often making little if any effort to justify why things work as they do, even when they are supposedly scientific (Green Lantern, I'm looking at you).

All damage modifiers are considered before you prevent it and heal. So he hits himself for 1, which is increased by however much; let's say 2. So he's hitting himself for 3. He would deal himself 3 damage, so you prevent it and one hero target regains 3 HP. It's just like any damage-dealing effect; you have to determine ALL modifiers before you can determine the final amount of damage.

How is that not what I said?

Did I SAY that it wasn't what you said?

Also, what you actually WERE saying wasn't very clear. I was just adding my input into the conversation.

I AGREE!!!!
