I just got my copy of the Sentinels RPG Starter Kit and going to be GMing my first game in a week. However I was wondering if there was a New Character Creation Template? I didn't see one in the starter kit but I've heard many times that creating your own characters are possible so I figured there would be something floating around. Or as of this moment, do we have to just copy and paste the format or something?
The Kickstarter will open in about May, maybe June. It’ll have a delivery estimate, which will probably be more accurate than the OblivAeon one since it’s nearly done already.
It’s actually kind of disingenuous to use Kickstarter for it. They’re basically just using it as a preorder platform.
And, honestly, I’ll be mightily surprised if they complete the kickstarter without a finished (or at least beta) pdf.
With most established publishers in rpgs, it’s become the norm to release the pdf just after the drive closes.
I can see both sides of the argument here but it definitely does run counter to Kickstarter’s initial impetus to provide start up capital for crafting a project. When that project is mostly or completely done, if turns into a preorder system and a hype machine. But, thats par for the course at this point…
Speaking from a purely capitalist viewpoint, it’s as fair as you can get. People vote with their dollars, things get funded or they don’t. KS takes their cut and they’re mke than happy to take on multi-million dollar projects as often as possible
From an intent viewpoint – and as someone who’s run 3 drives (2 successful), it does feel increasingly harder for a one-man-army like myself to get a product out there when established companies with capital and manpower and logistical assets are taking up that same space. I don’t begrudge these companies – They’re out to make money and KS is a great visibility tool. And hell, 7 years ago, GtG was in much the position I am now. They didn’t have a warehouse or a staff; just 3 guys and an idea for a card game. But when designers and creators have to actively research when larger companies like CMON are launching products, so they can actively avoid those dates, the window of success for start up creators gets increasingly narrow…
The issue for me with using Kickstarter as a preorder outlet for a product that's already almost finished is that it seems to create unrealistic expectations for companies who use it as a way to raise capital, since customers seem to get the impression from the former group that creating something takes much less time and money than it actually does, which then opens the latter group to unfair criticisms. Granted, this issue wouldn't be such an issue if companies were always open about saying when they already have partial development/funding completed, but until then it's still an issue.
With this specifically I admit I've been reading the "RPG companies usually have a PDF of the RPG right after the Kickstarter's done" comments people have been making and wondering what would happen then to RPG creators who used KS because they actually needed the funding to be able to then properly create the PDF.
Think of the Kickstarter not as funding the core book (that's going to come out no matter what) but funding more books for the RPG line, which might not come out if the KS doesn't do well. Plus possible extras/accessories that are only possible by judging interest via KS.
