Holy cow, you weren't kidding when you said "in-depth". Very comprehensive. Well done. :)
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :)
I find it interesting when it says the game is Arkham style difficult if you’re trying for a 50:50 win split, but our stats say that 66% win is certainly doable.
but great review!
A review is always subjective and our review is based on our game sessions, not on the statistics of the playtesters. We can only comment on what we experienced so far - not on what is 'doabale'. ;)
I expect that there is a curve over time to the difficulty. When first playing, w/out much knowledge of any of the decks, there's lots of things that can go wrong or fail to go right that wouldn't happen if one had a better sense of what to expect out of the decks. That's going to skew the difficulty immensely for newcomers.
Oh i agree, the review is only on what you can get with, and I understand. I just am curious as to how many people think that when they frist get the game? Our first gameplays almost a year ago now were no where near that brutal. Of course, were all very accomplished CCG players so we understand decks pretty quickly
My very first game was a 5 player game, 4 of which were new to the game, againt citizen dawn. Most of us were mtg players and had no diffiulty with the rules/decks, tho the 2 that were not ccg players also picked up the rules almost immediately too. I would say the mtg players had more difficulty because it was hard not to draw at the start of the turn. Anyway, citizen dawn crushed us pretty completely. The second game was againt voss, and we barely beat him. I believe 2 or 3 of us died that game. Both games were still immensely fun.
To the OP: very great review. Quite thorough, descriptive and informative. A very enjoyable read
A very good review. If I don't already possess the game, I would like to have a review like yours to help me if it would be the right one for me. But I think you should mention that you can get tokens and trackers with the Enhanced Edition.
Regarding the difficulty I think you're right to compare it with Arkham Horror, although by the time SotM gets easier when you learn more about the individual decks and their possibilities. But it also depends on if you choose the decks free or by random. In random mode it could be very brutal indeed. By choosing the deck I would say it will be easier because you can try to avoid some traps of villains and environments with the right heroes. Would be interesting to see how much random games differ from games with pre-selected decks.

Thank you Jenoolen, glad you enjoyed the read :)

Well, we did mention it...

I agree with you on the recommendation to choose the heroes after the villain and the environment is known to avoid any extreme outcomes in the match. But of course the random choosing for the heroes, the villain and the environment is fun and interesting, it better fits the comic book idea that some superheroes get a call to beat a villain that suddenly shows up to kick everybodys asses ;)
One thing to note lynkfox, when you guys started playing I had already about 10 games under my belt, and omg were they brutal. My first game did the recommended baron blade in megolopolis (at the time suggested as the easiest environment) and he didn't even get a chance to crash the moon, we just melted. But I do agree that having a group of people who are used to playing CCG's competetivly did help alot on those early games.
Oh hell, seems that I missed this part the first time. Even when I just looked over a second time I nearly missed it. I'm getting old.

Well, personally I don't like to pre-select the decks, I LOVE the random play. I just mentioned it as one reason for the difficulty factor. I prefer to be surprised what the game throws at me and try to deal with it. And since I played Arkham Horror a lot I am used to be kicked in the ass from time to time. Both games are so much fun even when this happens so I don't mind.
