I am making board game video reviews with a group of friends and when it was my turn to chose, I knew what to pick. Only the best game ever!!!! That’s right Sentinels of the Multiverse!
Trying to be constructive rather than destructive.
I think that you would do well with speaking points, similar to Dice Tower.
The inclusion of the various speaking points are good, but noone seems to have a passionate opinion that is laid out in a straight forward Yes or No. Seems very wishy washy at most times.
This might be due to the scripting, as the umms and ahhs and pauses take away from the argument itself.
Also, points in game reviews need fully backed up arguments, or proven experince; however, to call out a game as BORING, over and over, and then passing the review to the left is so very weak. I'm a SotM fanboy, but when Dylan started on his argument, I was waiting for the REASON he found it boring. All I got was whining, which is what I get from my 11 year old son when he would rather play xbox and rage quits SotM because he has a short attention span.
Tiny note, can't stand the green screen background. You'd do much better with a solid real background that is static so when you're watching a "Duelality Gamecast" review, there is no question about it.
Duel HQ or something. A Bookshelf of games behind you, posters of cool stuff, anything static across ALL videos.
Sorry if any of that was harsh, please let me know if I can clear up anything, I just got to work and it's early.
Please not a shelf full of boardgames, it's the most tired and overused device by video reviewers. The greenscreen didn't bother me as much as the static camera angle though. The setup didn't even change once, almost like you were recording a podcast rather than making a video. Actually, I'm sorry but the first thing that came to mind when watching this was the final episode of The IT Crowd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAxGcMdAE2E What does your show offer that distinguishes it from the rest? At present there is sadly nothing new here either in design or content.
Women's trousers aren't going to help in real life, so I would suggest that you script what you want to say beforehand and really work on having a strong and unique opinion. Even well made shows go off a cliff when they just go on about liking or not liking something without providing any truly informative content or putting their opinion making properly into context. It's also not going to cut it if all you do is parrot what your audience has already likely read on BGG or watched on Dice Tower/SUSD/Rahdo/etc. If you don't have much to say then review a different game that you can explore with more passion. I'd much rather watch a dynamic five minute show packed with meaningful content than one that rambles on for fifteen without a clear direction.
Absolutely make sure that you record in short sequences and that you do multiple takes during filming. Play them back at the time of recording so that you can redo on the spot with more energy, different camera angles or lighting, a change of phrasing, or whatever else is required. Then spend even more time editing the video together to get the best takes in the right sequence. This way you can also cut out the awkward silences, the uhmms and ahhs, and make everything a bit more lively and interesting to look at. Right now it's all done in a single take and you'll just never get your best content that way; professional productions look polished because they involve planning, practice, more practice, even more practice, and are filmed again and again and again in order to get it just right. you don't have to go to extreme degrees but it would help if you at least had close ups for the individual opinions rather than the constant wide angle shot.
Most importantly though, you've got to get the content right and use that to develop your unique identity.
You clearly have a lot of enthusiasm for this project so I hope that you can turn that passion into creating something genuinely different from the other indistinguishable video reviews that are already out there.
Thanks guys for the input that is what I was looking for and needed.
I see what you are saying about backing comments with facts and we are working on it!
We wanted to go with an off the cuff format where we discus things rather then script them but that requires interaction and different opinions and in these first videos we haven’t achieved it yet.
Thanks again guys, the feed back and criticism is appreciated!
That's great, just bear in mind that this is what every other video reviewer does at the moment, whether it's a single individual or a panel. I can only imagine that this is because these shows originally grew out of forum based reviews (wasn't Scott Nicholson the first to move to video?) and everything has remained so formulaic since, like watching a forum discussion rather than reading it. What is your point of difference going to be?
When you look at professionally made "off the cuff" shows they are all scripted to varying degrees, rehearsed, and many scenes are recorded more than once during filming. You are not watching an open debate that was recorded live even if it appears that way; everybody has at the very least prepared their arguments beforehand, written down facts and funny things to mention, and practised their speeches to make them convincing. Nobody can just sit in front of a camera and deliver a watchable performance without preparation, and "off the cuff" involves as much if not more work than a fully scripted show if it is to be convincing.
If all you want to do is churn the same handle and hope that some of it sticks then go for it. I admire your ambition, and I want to encourage you, I just hope that you will want to do better than the current low standards that are out there.
I'm really pleased that you are seeing the feedback in a constructive light! I hope that you can make a success of this endeavour.
Hey guys so this is one of our newer videos. It has a different format and is more inline with where we want the channel to go. Can you tell me if you think we are moving in the right direction?

We have gotten a few more videos under our belt and feel more comfortable on camera. The reality TV stile adds some punch to it I think. Again any criticism is appreciated.
Oh and I know this is a SotM site but you all have been great with the comments. This will be the only other video I share here unrelated. Thanks!
This is much better than the earlier ones, and a lot more watchable. You are clearly starting to develop your own style, keep it up!
I don't think anybody minds you talking about the show here, but it might belong in Off Topic rather than the general forum. I think it's interesting to see this evolving.
You sacrifice a duck to summon the GREAT AND POWERFUL MODS! BOW BEFORE THEM and OFFER UP YOUR FIRST BOUGHT GAME and they may take pity on a mortal such as you and move this thread.
Or you could start making train puns, that seems to get them involved very quickly.
Choo-Choo-se your path carefully, one leads to ruin and damnation, the other to loss of control of all functions related to pun making.
The Study in Emerald review was a big step up from the SotM review, I really liked the mini interviews as you went through the game, giving us insight into your thoughts as they came up, breaking up the 'game play' (such as it is) into nice easy chunks.
I also appreaciated the guy who dropped right at the beginning giving reasons he did not want to play, that was very useful into the tpye of pepole who would/wouldn't want to play aSiE.
Very good review of Study in Emerald, really made me want to explore it and know more.
Leaps and bounds over the SotM review; in fact, I'd love to see you re-cut the other one in the new format someday.
My only note is that the "fast forwarding" noise is not funny, has no place, makes my ears bleed (especially in a game format this long) and needs to never happen again. Please.
If you really feel the need to put sound effects? Just put the Benny Hill chase song or something, anything.
That would be "Yakkety Sax", Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler did a great version with added lyrics. I think it's wise to be careful about what you use, so better check for public domain rights first
It's a good sign that criticism is now on fine tuning what's there rather than on the whole structure of the show!
