I just had my first game last night after buying the Enhanced box at gencon and we were left with a few questions.
• What do we do if the Villian plays a card that is already in play? Speciffically, Baron Blade had Living Force Field in play and drew another one. Now he reduces all damage by 2? discard and draw another?
• Alternaltey, what about Baclkash Field? Now he retaliates with 6 damage against the first attack on each player's turn, OR 3 for the first, and 3 for the second?
• Environments: Does the card drawn at the environment stage REPLACE the current one, or is it played in ADDITION to the current one? We were in atlantas and I'd hate to see some of those cards pile up together...
• Lets assume Baron Blade has Backlash Field up and Ra has Flame Barrier. If I use my power to attack Barron Blade he'll take damage and Backlash Field procs, dealing damage back to Ra. Will this proc Flame Barrier and damage Barron Blade again?
First thoughts: My wife and I played 2 characters each. I had Ra and Bunker. She had The Wraith and Fanatic. Ra and wraith seemed pretty straight forward with good but uncomplicated options. No one liked Fanatic, but we didn't know that her default power was essentiall two seperate attacks. I liked bunker, but it took a while for him to get rolling. In the end, Ra died first, followed by Bunker and The Wraith on the same turn. Fanatic killed Barron Blade with 2 HP left. All in all, a good game!
No villain card is "limited," so they can have multiple copies of each card out. in this case, BB would reduce all damage by 2.
He would deal 3+3 damage after the first attack. EDIT: FIxed it based on pwatson1974's clarification. He gets the credit. EIDT2: Foote also wanted to clarify it it too, but he wasn't fast enough. He gets a little credit.
Environment cards stay unless their text says to destroy them.
Technically he'd retaliatwe with 3 and 3. If you have any sort of reduce, or increase, damage effect, that would come into play twice, once for each Backlash Field.
Welcome to the game, I'd suggest checking out Flamethrower49's strategy thread (sitckied in this forum) for help with characters that you don't get at first. Have fun and it's great to have you.
Welcome. Essentially the only cards that are destroyed when an identical card is played are the hero cards that have the "Limited" tag. Every other card can have multiple copies of itself, and doesn't remove cards on the field unless the text specifically says so (Distortion environment cards from the Realm of Discord environment would be an example of this).
Ra and Wraith are both great characters for newer players, they are easy to have fun with and reasonably straightforward. Bunker is also reasonably straightforward but like you said, he takes a bit to get rolling. I like Fanatic a lot, not everybody does. She has her advantages and her drawbacks. Each hero plays a bit differently, you'll have your favorites and that's normal. I'd suggest Haka and Legacy as heroes that are also suitable for newer players. Once you have a few games under your belt and you feel you've got the hang of it, give any heroes you didn't like at least one more chance, maybe having a bit more experience would change your opinion.
Something I found useful while still figuring out the game: Don't give up on a hero if you have a bad game. At least have a game where you win with each hero before making a decision on them.
I ended up playing Zero in 3 or 4 games before I managed to have a decent game with him, but he's my favourite now
I'd add Tempest to the list of starting characters. He has a lot of options, but they're all pretty simple and straightforward options. And of course not every option comes out every game.
Legacy is also pretty easy to run in the initial turns. So he has a learning curve within a single game (and sometimes not even then :( ).
Additional copies of Limited cards in play are actually immediately discarded rather when they are played, according to the rulebook. It means that characters like Ra cannot play a second copy of his Staff, regain three HP, and have it blow up.
My understanding of Limited is that the player does not even have the option of attempting to play the card, and that the "immediately discards" rule is for an effect within the game engine trying to put the card into play without listing any other options (such as incapacitated Set). Other effects take this into account by giving the option to place into the trash or hand instead.
My first game I played Adept, I've always loved Support classes and Adept looked fun. I was told not to do him first, but he made sense to me. LAter I would try Visionary and she would replace Adept as my favorite hero. I still don't get Nightmist, I've really tried to like her, but so often I just sit there drawing cards while my team could use help.
Nightmist is all about redirecting damage you would take. Once you get the "I damage myself for 2 to draw cards...but I discard cards to redirect that damage" is an endless damage engine that costs you nothing, she starts to click more. Just remember you need to discard the cards before drawing, so you can't do it on an empty hand. But you need to get that redirect amulet fast, so prioritize that early game.
That is generally my problem with her, the first few turns are big, and you spend them trying to get going. I'm cool when I need to Oblivion when not set up, I can do that. So many times though you need to get her equipment out, and you just play stuff to look for the amulet and take damage and draw while your allies fight.
I generally do 3 Heroes and I don't have a problem with her early. Her spells are good and unless she bites before she is sets up, she can contribute while going down on life hard to get back up later. Plus she has an unreliable fetch card for her equipment.
Still, she is not a support character, she is a convoluted combo-game-breaker character. Get her equipment down and a big hand and you are unkillable. Oblivion is the best example that she doesn't play well with others.
I always get Amulet of the Elder Gods out very fast, so my NightMist games are always really good. It's the only card she really needs. The only games I have a lot of trouble getting her up and running is when the team is going up against Iron Legacy. Even then, the problem is not with her per say, but that even if she lives via Mistform, everybody else is dead. So once you exit Mistform, everything hits NightMist, and even the Amulet can't save her.
