I’ve seen it mentioned a couple of times that the first expansion to SotM will include four new villains and two new heroes. But I’ve seen no new environments mentioned. Can’t we get even one new environment, guys?
There are going to be four new environments with every expansion. Come on, you don’t actually think >G would leave us hanging with just four environments, did you? I talked to Chris personally when he and Paul introduced me to the game at Gen Con. They mentioned that they were going to do some expansions, and Chris said they were planning on four total expansions. He said each one would have the same amount: two heroes, four villains, and four environments. He also said one of the expansions would be called “Time and Space”. I cannot wait for that one. Those two words together are like music to my ears (result of Doctor Who).
Oh no! I must have misspoke! There will be 2 Heroes, 4 Villains, and 2 Environments in each expansion.
Don’t be mad?
Can’t wait! When does the next expansion go up on Kickstarter? I’m planning on helping out, I’ve been so pleased with SoTM.
Next week! We’re super excited, as well!
So what does that mean exactly, to go up on Kickstarter? My assumption is that it means that there will be a couple of months where you work to build up enough commitments to fund the expansion, then once you reach your goal, we’d still be a couple of months away from the expansion being printed and made available to order on your site. Is there more or less to it than that? If you go up on Kickstart next week and reach your goal within a month, could the expansion be out before X-mas?
Also, based on nothing, I’m assuming that the expansion will cost less to buy than the original game. Say perhaps $20 instead of $40 since we’re talking about 205 cards instead of 580. I’m hoping that the shipping costs will be brought down as well so that we’re not paying $10 to ship a $20 game.
I’m going to keep the specifics of the Kickstarter secret for now, as it’ll be out in a week, but I will say that, if we make our goal with the Kickstarter, we will release the expansion at PAX Prime next year. It is still very early in the game for us to release an expansion before Christmas - we just released Sentinels of the Multiverse in early August!
The expansion will certainly be much cheaper than SotM, but I cannot speak to the final price yet, as that depends on the printer AND on the Kickstarter. If we raise as much as we need, then we do an initial print run of 5000 units and retail the game at a certain price. If we beat our goal by enough, then we do a print run of 10,000 units and retail it at a notably lower price. So, we’re hoping to hit the ball out of the park, for everyone’s sake.
As for shipping, our shipping prices are based entirely on weight (we don’t charge any “handling” fees - technically, we lose money on shipping), so you will certainly pay less in shipping for the expansion, as it will weigh less.
Hope this helps!
Great info, thanks. A year is an awful long time to wait though (imagine if WoW went a full year between releasing any new content). Hopefully you guys have got a barn full of downloadable content you’ll be posting for us to print out and play with while we’re waiting.
WoW is a video game, played by millions and sponsored by a multi-billion dollar company, Blizzard Entertainment. I think it’s kind of unfair to expect >G to keep up with that kind of production.
Really, a year is pretty fast, shockingly fast I think. FFG releases new expansions for its most popular titles on about the same timetable of about once a year, I think.
Even if I’m wrong about that, I’d still rather wait for quality than have them churn out any old thing.
Will be looking for and forward to it!

Right now our intention is to try to produce an expansion every 9-12 months, though if we’re doing well enough that could become quicker.
Well, I’m pumped for that Kickstarter. And an expansion every 9-12 months is pretty solid considering how new this is.
But wait, are you guys actually losing money on shipping? Isn’t that a more immediate problem?
I’m sure after a few expansions, though, SotM will get bigger and more popular. Especially if you guys keep going to conventions and selling there (though you’d still have to pay for the booth space, you’d eliminate the shipping problem), it’s sure to spread faster. And if those of us who say we’re recommending you all to game stores actually get through to the stores, that’d help pretty well too. Honestly, I can see this working. I can see you guys getting the money for the expansions, making them, and getting more. And then >G can move on to its next project. I really am rooting for you guys to make >G into something bigger. I love hearing stories about how small ideas turn into profitable businesses. Not trying to jump way too far ahead, but what comes after SotM has been completed? Assuming you all get some solid profit from all this (again, there’s a pretty good chance you will), is >G gonna keep going? Again, I’m not asking what are you guys making next, but given the chance, would you all make more (of anything)?
In addition to the expansions to SotM, we do have ideas for several more games nailed down, and we’re thinking of more all the time. We would all love to turn >G into our careers, and we’re definitely working towards that, both because we think it would be fun to do for a living and because we love games and want to get our ideas in peoples’ hands
Good to hear. Keep doing what you’re doing.
Oh my goodness gracious [i]YES. We have PLENTY more in store. Such as Secret Project: Tungsten! (seriously)
Secret Project: Tungsten? Did a light bulb flash above your head when you had that idea?
The only thing we can say about Secret Project: Tungsten at this point is this: it is a game.
Seriously, don’t expect to hear anything else about it for a while. I shouldn’t have even mentioned it. But I did. Because I love you guys.
I’m certainly not expecting a brand new game anytime soon, but it’s reassuring to know the wheels are turning, if only just a little bit. For now, SotM is the main dish, and we’re eager for you all to throw on some extra spices.
I guess I thought my “light bulb” remark was funnier than it actually was…
