Ra in Dresden Files Card Game

Just noticed Ra was revealed as a stretch goal in the Dresden Files Card Game Kickstarter. Looks like Dresden finally has someone to compete with in the "The building is on fire and it's not my fault" category.

Yes! I'm backing that KS now and I really hope they make it to Ra. :D

I'm quite excited for  this game, as I rather like the Dresden Files Universe. I once played in a Dresden Files one-shot RPG and they made me a Knight of the Cross. KNIGHT OF THE CROSS! I was beside myself.

The rest of the players didn't really know the Dresden Files, but I'd just read the then most recent book in the series. We got to the end of the climactic fight scene and the villain tossed a Denarian coin at one of the other PCs. I gasped aloud and yelled, 'No!'

It was great!

Anyway, about the game ... I haven't actually looked at the gameplay much yet ...

It looks pretty fun. Reminds me of Shadows over Camelot (without a traitor mechanic) where each person has a skill and several ongoing tasks to to divide amongst the team while maintaining resources (in this game fate, compared to cards in Shadows over Camelot). I backed it and am looking forward to Ra joining Harry's world.

Yeah, Ra as a goal is what made me finally go ahead and back it. Dresden's one of my favorite book series.

It looks interesting, and my wife is a huge Dresden fan, but I hate Kickstarting anything without a print-n-play I can testdrive.  Does anyone know if there is a pnp for this game?

I do believe there is, but you have to pledge to access it. That said, they have copious play videos on the KS, if you're willing to take a second-hand experience.

And Kickstarter allows you to pledge, see what is available, then unpledge if you don't like it.

I been eyeballing this game. The free mouse deck to backers is making me really want to pull the trigger since he is the most interesting character in the books. The game seems easy enough to fully teach nongamers.

i think the point shipping becomes free is the final point I will pull the trigger and make this my present to myself for passing my huge exam.

Thanks.  I went for it and you're right about the pnp files being there in the first update, so I'm good.

I have to admit, I'm not that interested in the Ra deck for the game.  Ra is SotM, Dresden is Dresden.  Just because I like something in its own context doesn't mean I want that thing in other contexts too (do I need an Iron Man character in my Elder Scrolls game?  I do not).  But if other people are stoked for it, fantastic.  More stretch goals for me. :)

Evil Hat as a company has always had some kind of PnP document available in a backers-only update #1 that they post effectively simultaneously with pulling the trigger to start funding. they also don't have playtesters do NDAs - to the contrary, they actively want their playtesters to discuss their thoughts and experiences about what's happening, good or bad.

The folks behind the Hat are Good People - to the point that, as long as I'm financially able, I've crossed the point of being willing to toss them a couple books for nothing in return. (This is the campaign that cemented that position for me.)

A note about the first set of stretch goals: the expansions for this game generally aren't coming free, due at least in part to licensing issues, but also because Fred works really, really hard to make sure that their stuff is run in a financially-responsible manner. The stuff in the current set (the Circle of Gratitude) will be free to backers, though.

To the person up-thread who was talking about waiting for shipping to be free: If you choose to join in, we'll get there faster.

I'm actually more stoked now about Mouse getting a deck further up the stretch goals.

My wife and I played it once last night.  We had an acceptable though not great time, and while my wife (who's the big Dresden fan) wished it felt more story-ey to her, we undertood that that's probably just because it was our first playthrough and we had to focus on the cards as cards rather than as story points.  No one particularly loved having to spend their turn discarding a card to recover Fate, especially if you had something awesome you could do but the guy before you also had something awesome to do, which they did, which used up all the Fate, leaving you to be the Fate janitor.

It seems like a solid enough game but I'm not sure there's $70 worth of game here ($40 base + $10/expansion deck), so I'm not sure if I'll be sticking with it.

I'm in right now for the base game, and will probably stay there. That's more about trying to be a wise financial steward of my money and less about the completionist impulse or lack thereof.

Never read the books. (It's on my to-do list, but it's a LONG list.)

But I'm a big fan of cooperative games, and I'm a hugh fan of Ra, so I'm in.

Plus now that I have the Urban Ra artwork, I see a new custom Ra promo in my future.

EDIT: multiple typos.  Can't type worth a s*** today.

I don't really understand why Nightmist was not chosen instead of Ra. I mean, I love Ra and am totally backing this project. But doesn't her character make more sense in the Dresdenverse than Ra?

Launius contributed to her creation meaning she may have more intellectual property bindings than Ra. Also Ra is a base character so somebody who wants to try sentinels after playing Dresden will find it more accessible to have a character in the base kit than one in an expansion.

Dresden also is already brimming with its own wizardly characters -- Harry, Molly, Ramirez and Luccio basically have that arena sewn up.

Ra, on the other hand, is new and different compared to what's available.

Also, Ra's easier to transpose.  Anyone can pick up Ra's staff and become Ra, allowing for a great deal of character and story flexibility, whereas Nightmist is Faye Diamond, granddaughter of Joe Diamond, and can't really be anyone else.

You're not wrong, but tell that to The Harpy.
