Scoopship?

Does anyone know what the deal is with that first ship shown on the U.F.G.D. Kicstarter update?  It's a ship... with some kind of grey scoops off to the side.  I have no idea what to make of it.  Anyone have any ideas?

I was trying to work out what that thing was as well...at first I wasn't sure whether it was part of the ship, but on looking more closely it looks like it is. But no, I couldn't quite make out what it was either.

Something has to scoop up the laser dragon poop...

It appears to be several ribbed fins, but I can't ascertain their function.

Solar panels

Note: I can't hear that without hearing the Rifftrax of Birdemic in my head.

Actually, those are heavy-duty shields! That ship is designed to be pretty much invulnerable on one side and heavily armed on the other so it can lock on to another ship and circle strafe around it, bathing its target in obscene amounts of cannon-fire while being protected from any outside threats.

Two of those, side-by-side, can cruise through virtually any field of fire or blast their way through nearly any fortification… Fun stuff!

(The dragon and technovores would still eat them for lunch, though. )

I love that there are small bits of damage on the front of the ship. Great detail on these images!

But one would have to fly upside down as due to a design flaw the shields can only be placed on the right side of the ship (the original designer had suffered a severe stroke and as a result was completely unable to even acknowledge the existence of the left side).

It's space. What's "upside down?"

What is upside-down in space?

EDIT: Oh man! Ninja'd by Craig! I am slain.

*smoke bombs*

BAH! I knew it! Too busy typing a response in another thread, was totally gonna guess shields.

Awesome. That ship is freaking cool.

I guess it would only be upside down in relation to the other ship. Which ship is in which position will be constantly debated by Akhelenic zano-physicists and actually leads to several intergalactic wars and the establishment of the One True Up religion.

Have you been helping Christopher write his back stories?

Not enough cooking stuff in there. I doubt it.
