SCRPG Limited Run: Hades Issue One: Welcome to Hell

MODERATE SPOILERS FOR THE GAME HADES

This is the first issue of a planned six issue collection based on the hit rogue-like game Hades. During character creation the GM should ask their players to answer the following two questions: How did your character die? Why is it so important that your character gets to come back to life?

Issue Structure

This issue is made up of a long montage scene, a short montage scene and then an action scene as the heroes start on their long journey towards the surface world. The first scene begins with the heroes emerging from the pool of blood at the end of a long line of shades waiting for an audience with Lord Hades. Hypnos, The lazy Personification of Sleep and keeper of the List is willing to let the heroes skip ahead if they help out with problems around the house. After getting Hypnos's help to cut in line the players meet with Lord Hades who thanks them with their work with vouchers for free drinks in the lounge, and then promptly rejects their requests to return to the land of the living

In the second scene, the party learn of Prince Zagreus and his repeated attempts to escape the underworld from patrons in the House’s Lounge. It does not take much effort to discover his story and where he can be found.

In the third scene the heroes meet with Prince Zagreus, who is distrustful that the party are spies sent by his father to under mind his escape. With the help of his loyal target dummy Skelly and a collection of Chthonic Companion stuffed animals the prince attacks the party. After his defeat, the way out into Tartarus is clear for the party to begin their long trek onward

CUTTING IN LINE

The Situation

The heroes find themselves dead, for any number of near infinite reasons, and like countless souls before them are not happy with the situation. Do not worry about the heroes being from the same geographical location or chronological time period. The staff of the underworld bureaucracy are overworked and underfunded, and wires get crossed all the time so it is not unusual for shades who died centuries apart to emerge from the blood pool at the same time. The forces of the universe will set them back to where they should be if they ever truly cross the threshold to the land of the living.

The heroes are greeted by Hypnos The Personification of Sleep and Keeper of the List. Hypnos is both extremely chipper and terrible at reading the room, and has quirky commentary on whatever it was that sent the heroes down here. He tells the heroes that they are at the end of the line of new arrivals who wish to greet the Lord of the Underworld and petition for wrongful death, and that in only 782 years they should be able to reach the front of the line and talk with the big man himself.

Running the Scene

The Heroes are unlikely to be content to wait such a long time in order to make their case to the Lord of the Dead, and lucky for them Hypnos has work he needs to get done that he is too lazy to see to personally. He eagerly recruits the heroes to get some things done around the House of Hades in exchange for bumping them up the que.

You should encourage your players to come up with their own tasks to help the residences of the House, looking to their principles to find the best ways to help out. These tasks should be accomplished by Overcome checks. Feel free to use any of the twists gathered here against the heroes in later issues. The shades in the house might just bar the heroes way later with information they gained watching the heroes work.

Possible tasks around the house include

Helping the Maid Dusa clean up an area of the house trashed by parting Spartans

Catching fish for the Head Chef in the pool just outside the house

Delivering Chthonic Companion stuffed animals made by Mother Nyx to the shades of newly arrived children to comfort them

Or any other number of tasks.

It is possible that some hot headed hero might decide to simply barge their way to the end of the line or kick down the gate to the house and start running. This action proves instantly fatal, as in his seat of power Hades is easily able to kill a shade in creative and brutal ways with a mere thought. However death is of only middling consequence as the offending hero will simply climb out of the blood pool.

Once each hero has had a chance to do some task to help out the house, Hypnos keeps his word and brings them to the front of the line to have an audience with the Master of the House

Give each player a chance to plead their case to Hades, explaining why they believe it is important they get a chance to return to life and boost up any accomplishments they made while alive and how they helped the house. Regardless of what they say, however, Hades is not willing to bend the rules. With a big red stamp on each heroes file and a gruff thank you for service, he mystically banishes them to the House lounge with a voucher for a free beverage.

DROWN YOUR SORROWS

The Situation

Asking Lord Hades for aid has proven a nearly fruitless end, save for the free Pomegranate cocktail, and if the heroes attempt a direct approach after this failure they are again met with death. It seems that the Underworld more than lives up to its reputation for being easy to get into, but impossible to get out off. The heroes are going to need to be clever about this.

Running the Scene

This particular scene can be as long or short as you and your players wish to make it. It could simply be a bridge between the two main scenes of the issue where the bar tender tells the thwarted heroes that they should talk to Zagreus since he has had more escape attempts than anyone else, or it could include several schemes of the players own to attempt to circumnavigate the House’s security. Any combat outside of the prince’s training room is likely to draw untimely death, but if the heroes are clever enough feel free to use their solution for getting into Tartarus over the suggested one. You can then either proceed directly to the next issue, or have the confrontation with the prince just inside of Tartarus.

WE’RE GONNA NEED TO BORROW THAT WINDOW

The Situation

Prince Zagreus has been making runs to the surface for quite some time now and has gotten close enough to taste fresh air, but he has not quite made it. Sure that his father is getting desperate to stop him he is sure that heroes are here to spy or sabotage him, and in frustration over his latest demise he quickly attacks, though he does let slip that his training room window is the one way out of the House that is not barred or observed.

Zagreus makes use of the various treasures he has gained during his attempts to escape the underworld. Including the Infernal Arms and keepsakes from his olympic relatives.

 Biography

Zagreus is the oft maligned son of Hades, the God of the Dead. For most of his life he believed that his mother was the Goddess Nix, the embodiment of night, and spent his time moving from one task to another within the vast machinery of the Underworld, always failing to live up to the expectations of his overbearing Lord father. Recently he discovered that he had been lied to his entire life, and that his mother is a mysterious goddess who now lives somewhere on the surface. Since then he has made repeated attempts to break through his father's security and reach the surface, dying often but getting stronger with each attempt. Despite the scorn of the realm's Master his repeated trips have done much good for the resisdence of this realm

Capabilities and Motivations

Zagreus is the master of multiple divine weapons, once used by the gods in their great war against their own forebearers the titans and has further gained insight into himself by reflecting using the Mirror of Night, an artfact bestowed upon him by Mother Nyx. His greatest asset though is his immortality. No matter how many times he is killed, as the Prince of the Underworld he will simple remateralize back home. Faced here on the cusp of another run into the Underworld, he lacks much of the favor his feats earn him with the Olympic gods and is less of a threat then he would be deeper into the Underworld

Upgrades

From the percision of Artmeis, to the cascading lighting of Zues the different powers the divine prince is capable of wielding is immense and diverse. Likewise, greater secrets from heroes of different ages lie within his Infernal Arms just waiting to be unlocked. Fighting Zagreus can be a different experience each time, and given that he only needs to get the battle right once thanks to his immortality it can be a daunting challenge to anyone standing in his way.

Aftermath

Being killed and sent back to the blood pool is not something the prince really holds against anyone at this point, and as he takes that fatal blow he sees that the heroes are really in the same boat that he is in. He promises to buy them a little time back in the house and tries to give them some tips about the dangers they are going to face on the long road out of the Underworld, but is cut short by death.

If the heroes take too long in defeated Zagreus and the tracker reaches its end, house guards lead by Hades chef of security, and Zagreus personal mentor, the shade Achilles arrive to see what all of the commotion is about leading to the heroes being arrested and sentenced to spend time in the deepest pits of Tartarus. This revels to the prince that the heroes are not spies sent by his lord father, and he arranges for their release. This will arouse even greater ire from the Lord of the Dead though, who will take this escape attempt personally from then on.

The heroes are now ready to head into the Underworld proper, make sure to award them the hero points they earned by using their principles in adding the house and fighting Zagreus, possible in the form of borrowed items from this armor to aid them.

I hope you all enjoyed reading and/or playing this and stay tuned shortly for the second issue in the series: It’s All Uphill From Here!

This was a fun session to go through. Kind of funny to make a mockery of death.
