Have the creators of the game thought about a clarified edition? They improved on the first edition with the Enhanced Edition. Now some rules clarifications right in the rulebook might be in order.
I don’t know… Put into play is effectively the same as playing, except that it gets around the “cannot play” restriction… I would say it WOULD force a shuffle. I haven’t seen otherwise confirmed officially, at least.
I didn’t say it WASN’T, I said I hadn’t SEEN it. My interpretation was that play, discard, and draw effects were examples, (“it does on these things,” not, “it does EXCLUSIVELY on these things”) usually given in the context of, “reveal doesn’t force a shuffle, but these are some things that do.”
In fact, the only official word I’ve seen is that reveals don’t force a shuffle. So, I would say the ruling is ambiguous. Unless, of course, you can point me to where they said that EVERYTHING that is not explicitly, “play, draw, or discard” does not force a shuffle (as opposed to them saying that a SPECIFIC action that is not one of those things, like revealing, doesn’t.)
The more I look at this, the more it doesn't make sense. Spiff's clarifications state that Play, Draw, and Discard always trigger a shuffle. Just because it says "Play the top card", that doesn't mean it's not playing a card. If there is no top card, shouldn't there be a shuffle in order to play a card?
This language has been around since the beginning. Citizen Dawn's Channel the Eclipse has "Play the top card of the villain deck". Atlantean Font of Power - "At the end of the environment turn, play the top card of the villain deck. Play the top card of each hero deck in turn order. If the played card is a limited card already in play, discard that card and play the next card. At the start of the environment turn, destroy this card." So the way it is worded, play the top card is the same as play the next card. And both of those are synonymous with Play a card. For the heroes, it is worded that way in order to distinguish playing a card from your hand.
So unless someone can point to a clarification somewhere that states that playing the top card is not the same as playing a card off the deck, then I'll have to go with Spiff's clarifications. Thanks in advance.
