SotM Digital Sneak Peek #3 - Putting the Damage On

This time I get to post the sneak peek thread! We've just released some more concept images of the digital version of Sentinels of the Multiverse. They cover the interaction that occurs when you need to a choose a target for damage dealing. Take a look and let us know what you think.

That looks intuitive enough. But shouldn't other heroes show up there as options?

You can click "show all targets" for that. I think it only shows the picture for "most likely targets" At least thats my understanding

I like the bulelt holes on the target afer the effect resolves in the linked images.

How are you handling mutliple targets? Sequential "Choose a target" steps or "Select all targets now"?

Yep, that's the idea. Suppose you were in this situation on the table top. You would just ignore the hero targets, not even considering doing them damage, even though you could. Since our screen real estate is limited, we want to make the most of it by focusing on the actions you're most likely to want to do. And if you do want to damage a hero, you still can, by showing all targets and selecting one.

Multiple targets are most likely to be sequential "choose a target" steps, because the available targets can change in between damage dealing. It would also be more difficult to show the calculations/effects for many targets at once.

If you're damaging all targets, or all targets of a certain class (e.g. all non-hero targets), then you're essentially choosing the order in which they will be damaged. In that case, there will be an "I don't care" button (or similar) that just does all the damage in whatever order. Most of the time that's ok, but some times you'll want to carefully choose the order.

Looking good.

You are mostly correct, but I love to target me some Fixer with mantis out.  If he has mantis, crowbars, and harmony, targeting an enemy and himself redirecting that damage to the same enemy he targeted hitting it for two shots of two damage each is a fantastic thing to behold.

For sure, and of course Absolute Zero often likes to target himself. That's why the option is available. You can do anything in the digital version that you can in the table top game =)

Though as a side note, I don't think that combo works exactly, since Driving Mantis only works for 2 or less damage. If you have Dual Crowbars and Harmony in play, you're doing 3 damage minimum. Unless you have a point of damage reduction from some other effect.

Actually, as per the newest ruling on Fortitude/Superhuman Durability, you could possibly trigger Mantis before resolving the +damage. Similar to how you can choose whether or not to trigger Superhuman Durability before or after Fortitude depending on the situation. I'm sure Ronway will chime in if I'm mistaken here.

This is not something I have been able to test out in the Mega Computer yet. Maybe I should try and do that.

I don't think so, because Driving Mantis has to wait until Mr. Fixer "would be dealt" damage. It is not allowed to take effect until all the other damage modifiers are considered.

We're working on a blog post that goes into our damage dealing algorithm (which we worked out with the help of Christopher), but the key here is that redirects cannot be ordered ahead of non-redirects.

Another example of people beating on another hero is AZ with imbued fire out. Its even better with twist the ether and coolant blast out

ok I see what you're saying. So the difference between the legacy ruling and mantis is due to it being a redirection

Looks nice, but for me the "bullet icon x 4" format feels wrong. It's highly suggestive of multiple hits (because in any other situation you'd read it as "you have four shots/bullets/attacks) which of course isn't the case. We say "4 projectile damage" not "4 times projectile damage".

I'd much prefer "4 bullet icon". It reflects the game wording better and doesn't imply multiples.

I agree with that. 4 (bullet icon) says to me that it's four of type bullet.

Good point. I was thinking about that too. We'll try some other layouts.
