The game itself is 342 MB. This is a compressed size and it remains compressed. Size required to install may be larger depending on how Amazon does things.
Infernal Relics is a 148 MB download (compressed) and is 875 MB installed.
Rook City is a 96 MB download (compressed) and is 580 MB installed.
Mini-Pack 1 is a 38 MB download (compressed) and is 151 MB installed.
The Season Pass 1 download is 282 MB (compressed).
DLC requires the installed space to be available, plus the download space in order to install. For technical reasons the DLC has to be the uncompressed size on disk.
I am glad someone else posted about this. I am playing on an iPad and while I love this game a lot (have all physical and digital material out), it feels like the size is out of control. Yet we are still waiting for a bunch of expansions on the digital version! It is about 3 times larger than any other app on my iPad. While I appreciate all of the art and sounds, I really would rather it be just a port of card game. I don't need, or want, all the extra bells and whistles just because it is digital and they can. I wish I could turn it off and it would just go away, honestly. Do I need an extra different version of character art because they are under 10 HP? No, because I can read numbers. Do I need a sound effect every time damage goes off? Or a ton of different music? Nope and nope. Sorry, but the way this is going it is going to end up taking up half the space on my iPad, and that is pretty ridiculous.
I do appreciate all the time and effort it must have taken to create all of that additional content, but really, why? The game is great; it doesn't have to be a video game for people to love it. The game is really enjoyable because of the mechanics and play, not the extras. Plus there is already a ton of art on the cards themselves. Is someone really going to buy the game because Tachyon's goggles light up when it is her turn?
Even doing a no frills version would still be large because of the card art alone. The extras they have put in are likely much smaller then the art itself.
Edit: I have access to Mega Computer which is the alpha version of the game with only text. While I like helping to test out functional it makes me eager to see the actual release even more so.
On the other side of the fence there are people out here who want it to be more video game-y.
Me? I had to delete a bunch of stuff, but it was worth it. It made me do some housekeeping of my apps and now I only have apps I really want/need, and fie me that's a good thing.
I wonder how much hassle it would be to make a lo-res version that could stay closer to 1.5 gigs when all done.
The original was small, but all the upgrades have it beautiful but also really big for people with cheaper tablets.
For Steam I would love all the bells and whistles and hi-res art is a must. But on my Fire HD7 with 5G memory and no memory card slot I can't even install it.
I know the team is small and working hard, and the results have been awesome, but an option for a low-res download would be a life saver.
Investigating whether we can reduce the DLC size is an item on our list. There are technical reasons why it is the way it is.
Our approach to making digital versions of tabletop games is to preserve the spirit, gameplay, rules and fun of the original while taking advantage of the power of digital. Sure, we could make a digital version where you move basic graphics around the screen. We could make a digital version that's just a spreadsheet. It would be the same game, but it wouldn't be awesome. We want to make things awesome. As far as technology goes, disk space is the last thing we're worried about, because it's something that gets bigger and cheaper exponentially as time goes on. We don't waste space unnecessarily, but we'll absolutely use it to make the game more awesome.
We want awesome, but merely cool and working is better than awesome and not working. I am one of the lucky iPad users where the game is working, but without sound. I fear as we add more expansions it will stop working as it has for many Apple users. I love your work and hope that you will find a resolution.
PS - please make multiplayer an optional add on. I don't want it if it will make me unable to do the pass and play games I do with my kids.
Multiplayer won't prevent you from playing game as we all do now either solo or pass and play. Based on what has been on the streams you will specifically have to choose to do multiplayer.
I have never heard of that problem, nor of the game not working for "many Apple users." Please send us feedback from in-game on the credits screen and we can try to diagnose the problem you are seeing.
