The Amazing Matthew Bishop

Hello!

I don't know exactly where to put this- but it was a good thought and I really wanted to put it out here.

I know Christopher stays away from custom content as not to be influenced by it in his own card creation- but The Cauldron is absolutely amazing.  I've been playing it for years now and as new stuff keeps coming out it continues to grow even more incredible not only mechanically- but artistically as well.

If Christopher can't look at it- can Adam?  It's such a super cool thing that GTG has allowed with this amazing fan expansion- so I guess the point of this post boils down to this:

I think GTG could benefit by working with Matthew Bishop to continue on in the world of Sentinels in card format. (or another world)  Not only does this relieve Adam on the art side of the workload- but once Christopher is done working on the Earth Prime line of products he could have someone else passionate enough to continue the project on and work with to continue to make magic happen.

Not something I would expect to see soon- but who knows for the future.  Afterall- Matthew has done such an amazing thing (and continues to do so for the love of it)-  imagine what he could do if it was official for GTG.

Just a thought...

I think Adam has done all the artwork so far to make sure everything officially Sentinels has the same art style. Pretty sure I remember that being said at some point somewhere...

I got the impression that Christopher and Adam do Sentinels stuff because it's their baby and passion project they love doing. That they ended the main card game because they wanted that part of the project to be wrapped tidily up and have a deliberate end point so they could take it in new directions, not necessarily because one or both lost passion for it.

Oh yeah- I totally understand why they wrapped things up the way they did- and I don’t think they have lost any passion for it. I just wanted to recognize how awesome that the Cauldron keeps generating such cool Sentinels tribute while also put the bug out there that GTG should take a look at it when the time is right. Love both worlds of it!

Edit- Boom! Awesome idea- down the road when and if Handelebra is ready they should sell the Cauldron as an expansion to the digital app. They can commission Matthew to do the new art for the app- fans get more content - and they all make some money. Alright everyone- that’s the end of my thoughts- many thanks for listening!

Well, with Handelabra I know they're very definitely considering trying to implement Steam Workshop support whenever the time is right to divert resources to that sort of thing, so then not just Cauldron but people could make whatever fan stuff they wanted for digital Sentinels in general.

Honestly I think the setup with Cauldron is already really good. Being allowed by a creator to manufacture and sell your fan idea based off an existing IP, even if it's not for profit, is a gigantic concession already. I think Red vs. Blue and some Star Trek fan media things are the only other times I've ever heard of a creator allowing that off the top of my head.

If anything, the Cauldron guy partnering up with Christopher would almost certainly result in the Cauldron guy having way way more restrictions on what he could create versus right now having what I assume is pretty free reign. (I assume there's probably just some sort of general "don't create anything really morally horrible that would make us look bad by association" type clause in the matter.) It might not actually be that great a deal for the guy as a result.

I thought the Cauldron guy had sort of a unofficial agreement with GtG? Am I the only one who remembers that? Because to get his stuff up in a format to print cards he needed their permission, and they gave him permission to make "non-canon" materials because so many of the fans wanted them to partner up together.

I might be wrong, but I think something like that al happened.

He's allowed to sell them through DTC, and GtG gets a cut.

Great input! All awesome stuff from everyone. Thanks for helping bring different points to the original thought! I didn’t know about the Steam Workshop part of it- that’s pretty sweet!

Steam Workshop is not a guarantee at this point but something Handelabra might put together.

Yeah, it’s a lot harder than it sounds unless all custom cards did things from a fairly limited list of effects. Meanwhile they have to code One Deck Dungeon, OblivAeon, any new content for Bottom of the Ninth, and any other new projects they’re offered that will directly result in sales. Adding Workshop support would be a fair amount of work for not a lot of benefit, so it has to be pretty far down their list.

And custom decks definitely do not all pull from a limited list of effects. If they make Workshop support, it's going to be with a huge "good luck!" to the fanbase, because we're gonna have our work cut out for us! XD

I would assume no one working for Greater than Games can look at the Cauldron stuff.   The problem is if someone makes fan content and then <G makes a deck that is similiar,  if the fan were not cool he/she could legally try to claim their idea was stolen.   So every game company I can think of has a very strict policy of not looking at any fan projects or excepting any fan submissions.

After Oblivaeon,  once they are done with the game,  they could potential decide to put a policy and process in place to review fan submissions for official release but that won't happen until <G is done creating cards themselves.

The fact that they worked with the Cauldron guys and setup a licensing deal so that you can get cards through DTC is really awesome though.  It shows that the guys making SOTM appreciate the fans and are not paranoid about "their game being stolen" by others.    Its an attitude that sadly not every game company in the industry shares, I can think of a couple who would have slapped the Cauldron guys with a C&D order the moment they put up their first custom card.

It really comes down to how open the source code of the SOTM:Digital is and how easy it is to add to.   Good modders can do a lot, its just takes time.

I am more curious about if Handleabra will do a game for Sentinels of Earth Prime and if somehow it will integrate with SOTM:Digital

The SoEP Ks had a stretch goal for making the video game version which wasn’t met.  Handelabra said if they made it the game would work within the main SotM video game as DLC but they’d also have a stand-alone version with just SoEP.  At this point much like Steam Workshop it’s a possiblity to be made but there is no guarantee.

Am I the only one who's not into the video games being together? I think the Mutants and Masterminds game seems fine, but I feel like it's just one more thing I'll have to buy in order to play the Weekly One-Shots, and I want to be able to play with the majority of people online without having to buy more stuff. The Sentinels Multiverse is fine by itself for me.

I just want more decks, and I kind of don't care where they come from. :B

My hope would be that they are two separate games but that if you own both you can use characters between games.   Weekly one shots would stay within universe(although maybe a monthly or occasional special cross over one shot could be fun).  Multiplayer would be what It will be.   I think some more match making options would help the current DLC problems as well as any future ones with new non-Multiverse content.

This is the #1 reason I backed the Green Ronin game. I play and run M&M, but use my own settings and cast or if we really want an established world there's Schmarvel and Schmee Cee. I'm kinda aware of the cast I'll be getting, but really I just want more decks to play. That's also why I have most of The Cauldron stuff (he apparently finished another set, yay Giftmas!) more decks and ways to play a game I don't get to play nearly enough. This is why I also hope for Handleabra to make more for the video versions, I play them more. Make Earth Prime a stand alone with dlc mode for SOTM and I'm happy, make The Cauldron I'm happy too, make a workshop mode and I'm learning coding again.

And now I can say I have all the Cauldron stuff available again. And I accidentally have 2 sets of the Cauldron promos (both 1 and 2) so maybe I have stuff to give away. I'll let my meat friends have the first shot, but I'll let you fine folk know as well.

And in a few more months, you won't have it all again! :V
