I know that the GTG team has the expansions all planned out, and I'm sure there's already a nemesis for Kismet in the works. But. I submit to you:
The Reader
Backstory: When you start messing around with alternate timelines, that has repercussions in the fabric of reality. Parallel universes turn into intersecting universes. When THAT happens, there can be accidents.
Karen Davies has been collecting Sentinels comics since she was old enough to read, and Wednesday is her favorite day of the week. This Wednesday, she's particularly excited to read the conclusion of the Shattered Timelines cross-over arc. She's there at the comicbook store as soon as it opens and starts reading on the El home. She takes her time, pouring over the art.
Just as she's settling down at home to read the last six pages, her power goes out. Bright flashes of light illuminate her window. She goes to the window to see what it is: a distortion in the fabric of reality has opened up just outside her window. Before she can react, the distortion reaches out and pulls her in. The world goes dark.
When Karen wakes up, she's outside, it's night, and it's raining. She knows in her gut that she isn't in Chicago. The streets are almost deserted, and the few people who are out and about are walking quickly, heads down. She briefly wonders if this is a dream, but the cold rain is soaking into her jeans, creating a squishy, unpleasant feeling that no dream could replicate. But if she isn't dreaming, how did she end up here? Where IS she? She stands up and brushes herself off. This is no time to panic.
There's a thud behind her, the sound of someone landing hard on pavement.
"You thought you could get away with it, didn't you? You thought I wouldn't know? Well, you'll pay for your insolence. Hands in the air."
Karen raises her hands, wondering if she can panic yet, and turns around slowly. It's dark, and he's in shadow, but there's no mistaking it. Karen Davies, citizen of the real world and consumer of Sentinel Comics, is being arrested (if she's lucky) by Iron Legacy.
Now she can panic.
Gameplay: The basic idea behind The Reader is that she has no powers of her own, but as a citizen of the "real" world, she can alter the actions of all fictional characters and locations. So she'd have minimum hit points (maybe 24-26) because she has no powers or training and probably no way to do direct damage. Her real power comes in deck manipulation. She would be able to give heroes extra turns or phases, rearrange the order of cards in any deck, search through decks to find specific cards and put them in play, overcome "Limited" limitations, and her strongest power: the ability to undo a villian or environment turn. Her other major limitation: she can't do any of her powers on herself. She only has reality (deck) manipulation powers with respect to fictional characters. So while another hero, like Visionary, could help her deck, she can only affect all other targets.
Cards/ Powers:
Deus Ex Machina- (base power) Another hero can play a card or use a power.
MacGuffin- (one-shot) Search through another hero's deck, select 1 card, put into play or into the player's hand, shuffle the remaining cards.
Narrative Necessity-(ongoing, power) Another hero gets a +1 damage dealt boost or a -1 damage taken boost
Cos-Play- (ongoing) Take an ongoing or equipment card from another player's hand and place it in front of Karen (Imagine having one Inspiring Presence in front of Legacy, and one in front of Karen) The limited applies to the character, so you could have 2 versions of each limited card. The text would still read as before, so if you put out one that has a power, the card's owner has to do the power and might be limited in the number of powers he/she can perform. If it is an automatic damage action, the card's owner does the damage. If it is a damage reducer, the reduction applies to the card's owner, never Karen.
Editorial Input- (ongoing) When a hero ongoing (melody, harmony, and rhythm too), equipment, or relic card would be destroyed for the first time a turn, prevent that destruction.
Flip to the End- (one-shot) Draw the first five cards of any deck, rearrange them and put them back on top.
Reboot- (ongoing, power) All other heroes take one card from their trash pile and puts it in their hand or in play
Fanfiction- (ongoing, destroy at the beginning of Karen's next turn) All other heroes may play 2 cards and draw 2 cards OR use 2 powers.
Ret-con- (one-shot) Undo the effects of all cards played during the last environment OR villain turn. Discard those cards.
In some sense, I'm just being silly. On the other hand, I'd love to see what you could do with someone who basically (besides Narrative Necessity) does nothing but manipulate the decks. On the one hand, you'd be giving up all damage dealt, survivability, and a lot of the boosts, but you'd be getting instead the ability to get the exact card you need when you need it or the chance to rewind that Devastating Aurora. Also, getting rid of limited for certain things could be really useful. She might actually be too powerful, I'm not sure.
