Villains of the Multiverse Impressions

Thanks.  Still no news here.

Yeah, I will never play an H=5 V-format (Vengeance/Villains) game. Takes way too long; as one friend described it "All the fun and excitement of a regular game of Sentinels packed into twice the amount of time" (or something to that effect).

I won't tell anyone else they can't do it / enjoy it, though! That's just our view on it. :sunglasses: For us, H=3 is where it shines.

Aren't the new decks supposed to alleviate the amount of time it takes to manage the villain decks? Or does it vary?

The post I read on BGG was that playing five villains from VotM took about 3 hours.

I know several playtesters have posted that there was a lot of work put in to reduce the amount of bookkeeping compared to Vengeance, and the game I played did seem to be fairly straightforward.  There were just still a lot of things going on.  Between 5 villains and several targets or special cards from their decks they had dealing damage and 5 heroes taking their turns and also figuring out who can best absorb the damage or debuff from the villain cards or re-checking highest HP / most cards in play, the time to manage everything added up.

I'm glad to hear that H=3 shines.  We often have 6 people at the table, so we can try two separate games next time that happens.

Edited to add: I'm glad that I'd gotten an extra token pack in the past, because we used up all of the Damage Taken +/-1 tokens.  We were also stacking HP chits on single tokens to indicate Damage Taken +/- X where X > 1 from a single ability, not using them when there was a +1 and -1 cancelling each other out from ongoings that were expected to remain in play, and putting the tokens across multiple villain targets when they all shared the damage taken modifier.  There were still a lot of those modifiers floating around.

5 heroes it is going to do that, there isn't a way around that with 11 decks in play.  4 players isn't bad, but it is slower.  Three players it shines.  Largely because there is less time between turns you run so you don't check out, and when players check out in Vengeance you miss effects and it gets really hard to keep track of what is going on.

Yeah, I think VotM is quicker/easier (from an execution perspective) than Vengeance, but you're still dealing with multiple villain decks, all with their own card plays, effects, triggers, etc. The V-format just takes longer, no matter how well designed the decks are.

Having said that, VotM Plague Rat is really good at accellerating the game! He loves beating up on other villains as much as he beats up on heroes...

I just got the shippment notification. I wont get mine until end of Next week. Was really really hoping it would be this week. I play almost every day at work with some co-workers (I work in Software Support for Garmin at one of the call centers and we have lots of time right now between calls)

We have been anxiously awaiting the expansion and the villian cards for Months.

Oh well, one more week wont kill me right?  :stuck_out_tongue:

Just got my preorder in the mail this morning! It occurs to me as I sort through this stuff, that Im going to need to change up how I organize all these cards. There may be a third box involved at this point!

How is the box? Is it big like the Vengeance expansion? I was hoping it would be so I can get them all in there (and maybe fit the Cauldron, too?)

It is precisely the same as the Vengeance box.

With that being said, I am sadly having to use four large boxes to store all my cards. I also use the premium sleeves, so that's partially why. The penny sleeves just are too flimsy for my tastes.

If people are curious how I have my boxes set up. Currently, I have all heroes and the environments from the Base, Rook City, Infernal Relics, Shattered Timelines, and Wrath of the Cosmos in the Rook City & Infernal Relics double expansion box. Starndard villains, the rest of the Environments, and tokens are in the Villains of the Multiverse box. Then all the Vengeance style villains in the Vengeance box.

I know mine will take up more space since I sleeve them.  I think I'll have enough space.....

I was going to use the following setup for my cards when VOTM arrives:

Base box: All heroes

IR/RC box: All villains, rule book, any miscellaneous stuff (promo deck bios, etc)

VOTM box: All team villains and environments, oversized cards, tokens.

Will this not work?

That sounds like it would work.

We do all heroes in the Sentinels core box, environments, standard villains, and tokens in the Infernal Relics box, and Vengeance-style villains in the Villains box. Game storage is one of the very, very, very few times when having to do blood glucose tests is useful. The test strip tubes are the PERFECT size for Sentinels HP tokens.

Anyway, our impressions of Villains:

Some of them are a little oily, but we appreciate the use of all-natural ingredients.

The Hunted Naturalist is now the Eaten Naturalist!

He IS prey! It says so right there.

Killswitch, just FYI, I edited my post to include some storage comments.

Do you use the premium sleeves? That's the issue I'm facing.

My setup:

All but 4 heroes in RC/IR box

Villains in Sentinels Enhanced Edition box

Vengeance villains/villain character cards/oversized villain cards in Vengeance box

Environments, Dice bag and token bag in Villains box, as well as four heroes that didn't fit.

Rulebooks and mini-expansion information inserts in Shattered Timelines box.

It's quite a pain.

Got mine, but no oversized pack.
