OK, so I played a few game of wage master. Everytime we played we would get the following cards by turn 2 and in this order. The New Deal (end of turn Even amount HP heros take 3 damage), then Losing to the Odds, then Who are you fighting. This setup makes it impossible to win. Granted we got him to flip and after the shuffles guess what came up in the same order. Then he flipped from his deck 4 waglings. So Game over. From that day forward, we haven't played him because there was no fun in playing him in 3 games. I don't mind hard games, but when you can't win because of 3 cards. I feel this deck needs a errata to prevent truely impossible winning condition.
P.S. make it so that conditions can be flipped over instead of being destroyed would even it out, not make them indestrucable and make them ongoings that taunt you because you can't get rid of them.
I remember beating Losing to the Odds and The New Deal with Sky Scrapper and Guise in play, 3 Heroes. I don't remember exactly how it went but it was a double Thortarian Monolith and basically administring the damage made it so we ended with all even HP.
You didn't mention the Heroes or number of players so maybe it was unnwinnable, maybe Wager Master shenanigans were overlooked. He is basically a Villain you beat by playing the rules more than the game.
Wager Master can lose due to his own cards on his first turn potentially. Most of his conditions will flip if you meet certain requirements and getting him to flip over helps immensely since they'll all flip over. I'm not saying I'll play him frequently but he is the most interesting/ challenging mini expansion villain so far.
4 heroes. Can’t remember the setup. But issues is the same regardless of hero team size. Those 3 cards in that order prevents winning because no winning condition can be meet other then losing. And when we did flip him he revealed the same 3 cards in the same order causing a unbeatable sitaution. And this has happened to us every time we played him.
sounds like bad luck. happens in card games like that. it is an outlier statistically that the same card order happened for you in three different games. like, a very large outlier.
wager master is definitively a different kind of villain deck. its totally ok to not like it. i dont mind it personally, but its not one that hits the table nearly as often as somelike like dawn for instance.
But it can be. It's different if you have 3/5 Heroes than 4, but basically your goal is to modify the damage dealt by The New Deal so that at the end you all have even HP instead of having it modified to odd HP (basically change the 3 damage to an even number damage). It also depends on which one is checked first, if Losing to the Odds or The New Deal. Let's say that The New Deal is checked first (which is harder than the other way around):
Wraith: Stun Bolt on yourself and/or other Heroes can make them deal themselves 2 psychic damage instead of 3. Combat stance with increased/reduced damage. Legacy: increase all damage dealt by heroes so they all deal themselves 4 psychic damage. Tempest: Otherwordly Resilence, Localized Hurricane, Elemental Subwarve Inducer (same reasoning) Visionary: Twist the Ether, Cocoon Ra: Imbued Fire+Flesh of the Sun God Fanatic: Divine Sacrifice
Fixer: Crowbars, Jack handle, Monkey Fist, Driving Mantis+Pipe Wrench, Hoist Chain, etc. Expat: Flak Jacket
Argent Adept: give +1 or -1 damage dealt/taken
Setback: Uncharmed Life, Wrong Time and Place, Silver Lining (a bit of an extreme case) Naturalist: Croc or Rhino form do the trick.
Captain Cosmic: Energy bracer, some weird combo with Autonomous blade+Siphon+a Power Use SkyScrapper: Thortharian Monolith for 4 Heroes, Cortex Hyperstimulator,
Scholar: For him: Double Flesh to Iron/Expect the Worst. For the whole team: Alchemical Redirection, Offensive Transmutation.
I'm sure there are others. Basically there are ways around each even HP guy dealing themselves 3 damage and end again with even HP and winning. The goal there is just to play stuff on the heroes instead of dealing with the Villain. And getting lucky with the Environment!
