Weekly One-Shot #295: A Deal With a Dragon

Pirates vs. Ninjas! and a dragon! and (robotic) dinosaurs!

Well, this one certainly was a doozy! La Capitan lived up to the challenge mode, taking on F5 Wraith, Haka, Ra-Horus, and Unity in the Temple of Zhu Long.

As you can see, very close Mint for me. Poor Unity has zero means to heal herself, but yet still managed to avoid taking a dip in the resurrection pool. No one went under in my game, in fact.

I would recommend at least one Mega Computer to keep the poisoners and Master of the Temple from picking off hero targets. Smoke Bombs are a life saver, and Wraith’s power + Trust Fund eventually got Unity the handful of bots she needed. Once the Mysterious Ceremonies are set up, you can effectively heal the bots by pulling them back with Scrap Metal and redeploying on the environment turn. Stealth Bot can keep absorbing a lot of damage that way.

La Capitan flip-flopped twice for me, and at one point the heroes killed a couple ninjas before she played Temporal Thief. So she ended up with ninjas buried beneath her for a long time, and not bothering the heroes! Finally ended once Unity had a horde of bots out - couple Platform Bots and a pack of three Raptor Bots! Burnt LC down from 60-something to zip in two rounds!

Clandestine Funding + Trust Fund sounds like a great combo, one that I wish I’d thought of before I tried and failed this fight the first time around!

I almost never use Scrap Metal (other than as fodder for Bot-Hack), unless I can play it out of turn; and even then, it usually makes more sense to just play a golem. I might actually have to play it for this one-shot!

Shoot Straight.
Conserve Ammo.
…

This was absolutely awful. Aside from Haka’s turn-one Ground Pound, no one got any of the cards they needed to be effective, and I ended up dying to the entire crew of the Paradoja being on the field at one time.

¡Ay, Dios Mio! !Qué terrible!

I had to focus on Battle Forged and Final Breath the first few rounds with whatever I could hit 'em with. Stun Bolts, Throwing Knives, Taiaha, stray fire from Ra - you name it! And of course Mable must go ASAP before she wrecks lives. Once the bullies that pick on the little guys are gone, I finally got La Paradoja out of there, maybe the fourth round or so.

It eventually got to the point where the highest HP hero targets were Swift/Champion/Turret Bot, so they got smashed by any crew that were left and sometimes the True Form too. Once you get LC to the “Split Across Time” side, I would just leave her there with 1-2 cards below so she’s not damaging heroes. Then you can sorta breathe and setup a little before flipping her back and going for the kill.

Of course, this may not apply so much given different shuffles from her as long as the ship stays out. I’ll just say Good Luck! It was a rather challenging fight.

Near Mint after a first try that was a slow slog down to the heroes going down and La Capitan at full hp

Second went much better, though by the end it was still ~7 hp each, though no one went down and needed to be resurrected. It took a few rounds to finally beat the Ship down, and with a couple early Pillages I didn’t waste all my good ongoings/equipments. From there, Ra pretty much just used Flesh of the Sun God to tank Siege-Breaker and everyone else slowly took out the other crew. Wraith used smoke bombs to save the bots from Final Breath and Battle Forger and fed cards to Unity with Funding. That allowed her to slowly build bots until she finally found Stealthbot and Flash Forge to stop the Poisoners from doing anything. Haka mostly tanked and Taiha’d his way through the crew.

Mysterious ceremonies at that point were just beneficial, so I left them out. Resurrection Ritual can actually be useful for keeping Crew out of her trash/deck, as long as you destroy The True Form before it triggers every turn. Otherwise, the environment kinda helped keep crew under control, but also went after bots more often than I liked.

My second attempt, I didn’t even get to Mysterious Ceremonies. >.< I have no idea how people are beating this.

I ended up winning on my second try by following this opening guide.

Made three tries, lost three times. I’ve certainly never seen a Mysterious Ceremonies appear. In my final try, I got La Capitan down to 8 HP, but then she flipped and the ablative defense kept her alive until my whole team was dead.

I don’t know why but I really struggled with this one. More so than any in a while, I just couldn’t work out a strat to survive long enough to see a Mysterious Ceremonies show up.

Eventually on like the 7th attempt I got a favourable shuffle from the ship and had a pretty straight forward win from there. Definitely won’t be coming back to this oneshot for a long, long time.

Figured it out on my fifth try through the magic of shenanigans.

First turn, I got Drawn to the Fire and a stun bolt out and used Ground Pound to slow down attacks. On the second turn, after La Capitan played a pair of Ongoings, I decided to take some hits to the face. I didn’t pop Maria Helena’s Revenge; instead I just stun bolted La Capitan. Haka did some damage to the high-HP people, and then Ra popped Solar Flare and blasted everyone with fire before taking damage. Then Unity gave Ra a second go, letting Ra hit everyone again. This killed a bunch of crew; La Capitan responded with a lot of hits against my own folk. Then on the environment turn, the poisoner killed two more people and there was more explosion.

The result of all of this was that Ra died, and all La Capitan had left was Siege-Breaker. At this point, I won.

More precisely, at that point I started doing one of two things:

  1. If there was an Ongoing in La Capitan’s trash, Ra put it on the top of her deck.
  2. If there was no Ongoing in La Capitan’s trash, Ra put Plunder on top of her deck, letting her destroy a single card and heal 2 HP.

Unity used Bee Bots to blow up the Ongoings and keep them looping, Wraith used Stun Bolts to minimize La Capitan’s damage, Haka punched everything, and Ra just stayed dead.

Won with everyone else at 10-15 HP.

Well that was a disaster. Battle Forged offing a Poisoner on round 2 and getting a bonus play, Maria Helena’s Revenge making it lethal to kill any Crew, Plunder wiping the board repeatedly…this is definitely La Capitan late in her career, coming back in time to ambush the heroes at a weak point in their history. The only way I can see winning this one is to let Ra die and then abuse his OP incap ability to lock her deck, but even then you need an Ongoing kill every turn, and none of these heroes can do that repeatedly unless Wraith draws her deck and recycles the Grappling Hooks forever. And even then, you have to get rid of The Ship, Mabel, and probably Battle Forged. What a nightmare.

Man, sounds like people are really struggling with this one. Must’ve been some awful shuffles you got. Mine was not easy by any means. I did have Plunder wipe my board one time, but Mabel didn’t live long enough to do major damage. I was just gonna go with Resurrection Ritual as a backup if someone went down. Never thought about leaving Ra dead and cycling La Capitan’s deck. Drawn to the Flame and Flesh of the Sun God helped a couple times, but got destroyed by something or other (too many options for that in this game). She did waste an “All Together Now!” while La Paradoja was still in play. Near the end, I had Wraith Eyepiece a couple of the Revenge cards on top so Ra got to do another Drawn to the Flame, but it was the bot army that really took her down!

That guide that Omegatron linked to is crucial; wiping out all the Crew with 9 damage to all enemies actually gives you a fighting chance, while not doing that basically guarantees defeat. If the targets all stay in play, you’re facing too much damage and too many bonus card plays to have any chance of surviving, let alone building up to the point you can burn through her 75 HP plus all her card-shields.

There is a minor error in the post, though; it says you should use Clandestine Funding to give Haka a card, but then tells Unity to play Supply Crate, which she won’t have unless that CF card goes to Unity instead. Haka can get enough cards in other ways, but the best way to get a win in this game seems to be letting Unity go full mad-scientist to the Nth degree. This is tricky with lots of things targeting low HP, but Mega Computers will turn off the environment, so you’ll only have to worry about Battle Forged, Final Breath and Captain’s Orders (plus Maria Helena’s Revenge, which is always a must-kill card, though you can delay taking it out for a turn if you Throat Jab her).

One fun detail I noticed in this match: because it’s somehow always Ra who dies to Final Breath et al in the first couple rounds, he can use the Rites of Revival (NOT to be confused with the Resurrection Ritual - not ideal card naming there, C&A) to come back, with Haka and Unity having the needed cards thanks to Wraith dumping her hand, and here’s the cool part. Those Ninjas and Poisoners that litter the field any time you can stop the Vikings and Samurai from slaughtering them? When Ra has promised Zhu Long not to break any of his toys, you can play Scorched Earth again and again without the damage ever going down. Nothing says “god of the sun” quite like dealing 6 or 8 damage to all of the villain targets, while the ninjas all stand around silently approving of your Flame Jutsu technique.

I for one used Inventory Barrage, Haka of Battle, AND Powered Shock Wave to take her down from 48 to 0 before Unity even ended her final turn. But I claim no credit, since I’d never have thought of the opening necessary to survive that long.

Mint with the heroes at 16/17/0/14.

My word, the first third of my game was brutal to the heroes. They were taking a pounding, and were not having much luck clearing La Capitan’s crew off the deck or even getting set up. But around round 3 or 4 Ra made a risky play that let him send out a lot of damage to all the villain targets, which really helped stabilize the fight for the heroes. But at the end of this he was down to 3 hit points, and wouldn’t you know it that “Final Breath” came back out the next round and destroyed Ra.

But this actually turned out to be good for the heroes, since one of Ra’s incap abilities allows him to move a card from the villain’s trash to the top of her deck. Ra did this the rest of the game to stall La Capitan’s deck and keep her from playing some of her really bad cards. Ra at first started moving “Ongoing” cards, but then I had an epiphany and started moving “Temporal Thief” back onto the top of her deck. Since her flip condition is based on cards being under her at the end of her turn, this insured La Capitan stayed on her flip side the rest of the game, which kept her from dealing damage her big damage. She did send out a point of damage to each hero target due to “Temporal Thief”, but once Unity got “Stealth Bot” out, that was the end of that damage. When Ra fell, I was really thinking about bringing him back via the environment’s “Rites of Revival”, but decided Ra’s incap ability was just too critical. Not a heroic move on my part, but tactical. And man, the heroes needed all the edge they could find. And it amused me to think that La Capitan got stuck in a time loop by playing “Temporal Thief” over and over again.

After this, the heroes had breathing room, which was good, since it took forever for them to get set up. But once they did, the heroes took La Capitan down in about 2 rounds.

Wraith used her innate power to let Haka draw cards. She also got rid of bad ongoing cards of La Capitan and eventually played a “Mega Computer”, which really helped eliminate a lot of damage from the environment.

Haka was trying to draw his entire deck, so he could play “Ground Pound” every turn, but by the time he got this set up, Unity’s growing bot army finished La Capitan off the next turn. I swear Haka’s “Savage Mana” cards and all his “Dominion” cards were at the very bottom of his deck.

Unity was a bit frustrating, but slowly got her bot army growing. I think she didn’t use a power for over half the game. But as frequently is the case with Unity, once she gets rolling, she is a juggernaut.

The environment wasn’t overly horrible to the heroes. I left “The True Form” out an extra round or two, hoping against hope that Haka would eventually dig “Savage Mana” out of his deck so he could bury “The True Form” under it. Once he did that, the environment was mostly defanged.

Having played this once, I can see things I could do to really improve the match, but I don’t think I’m gonna do that. Gonna feel proud, take my “Mint” and head for the exit.

Finally.

By the end neither Ra nor Unity could damage environment targets, and nobody had much in hand.

The ideas in the walkthrough were a great jumping off point - keeping the Paradoja and Battle Forged off the playing field as much as possible was critical, and beyond that it was just a matter of knocking down crew and whittling down La Capitan until Mysterious Ceremonies came out (x3!) to help the team get set up for one, go-for-broke final round, throwing Scorched Earth, Powered Shock Wave, Inventory Barrage, and everything else to take her from half her HP to a much more pleasing 0.
