I tried searching the forum to understand how Wrest the Mind behaves when a target deals damage to multiple targets. For the purpose of this exercice, let's say "BOB" (a fictive card) has the card Wrest the Mind played on him, in a 4 player game. BOB has the ability "On [Whatever], deal all hero caracters 2 fire damage". [Whatever] happens. So the posibilities I see:
1- Visionary activates the ability and is able to redirect 8 (2 + 2 + 2 + 2) fire damage on a single target, then deals 3 damages to both her and the target. (The order is not an issue, it has been stated multiple times in some rulings.)
2- Visionary activates the ability and is able to redirect 2 fire damage on a single target, then deals 3 damages to both her and the target. Visionary can then do it up to 3 other times (one for each other hero.)
3- Visionary activates the ability and is able to redirect 2 fire damage on a single target, then can activates the abilities up to 3 other times (one for each other hero), then then deals 3 damages to both her and the target up to 4 times.
I think 3 is clearly not what's happening, but I would understand whether it's 1 or 2. Any thoughts?
I would say it's the second one. Wrest activates whenever its target deals damage. If Bob is hitting four different targets (with his multi-hit ability), that is four separate instances of damage and so each one can trigger Wrest, permitting Visionary to redirect all four instances of damage as they occur (and then dealing Bob and herself three points of psychic damage) before moving onto the next instance of damage. Obviously if the psychic feedback effect kills Bob after he's had his first couple of damage instances redirected (should Visionary choose to do so), the whole thing stops, Bob is destroyed and thus so is Wrest (and Visionary doesn't hit herself after that point because the card telling her to do so has just been destroyed before she got to that bit on that particular attack).
Option 2 is correct. For each instance of damage dealt, you can choose to activate Wrest the Mind (redirect the damage, damage the WtM target, damage Visionary). It should be noted that if the second step (damaging the target that WtM is played on) kills the target, Wrest the Mind is also destroyed and deals no damage to Visionary.
Thus if we replace Bob with Citizen Hammer 3 Hp and 3 fire damage to all hero targets you would only redirect the first instance before he died, whil Citizen Winter with 4 Hp could withstand the first 3 damage and succomb to the second redirection if not already damaged.
