On my way through the Multiverse, I took a good look at Tempest’s Cleansing Downpour card. It had three team members on it - Tempest, Legacy, and the Wraith. I thought to myself, “That would make a pretty good three-hero team. I should try it.” And so I will. I plan to go through all the villains and all the environments (though not all the combinations thereof).
For the fun of it, let’s list everyone’s difficulty indexes, according to Matthew Gray’s latest tables:
Legacy (-46), Tempest (-22), and the Wraith (-6), for -74. Three players is +42, so the team grades out as -32 overall.
Matchup #1 will be against Advanced Ambuscade (-69) at Atlantis (+46). That adds up to -55.
Matchup #2 will be against Grand Warlord Voss (-17) at Megalopolis (-15). That adds up to -64.
Matchup #3 will be against Advanced Baron Blade (-3) at Wagner Mars Base (-11). That adds up to -46.
Matchup #4 will be against Omnitron (-2) at Silver Gulch, 1883 (+4). That adds up to -30.
Matchup #5 will be against Citizen Dawn (+3) at Insula Primalis (+10). That adds up to -19.
Matchup #6 will be against Advanced Mad Bomber Blade (+15) at Megalopolis (-15). That adds up to -32.
The final matchup, #7, will be against Cosmic Omintron (+59) at Wagner Mars Base (-11). That adds up to +16
I’d like to think I’m kind of a good player, so I’m favored to win every one of these. It will remain to be seen if I actually do.
I’ll chronicle the highs and lows of each game and how long it takes me to get through each one.
Matchup #1 - This was a very pedestrian matchup for the heroes. Amby never got out his cloaking device and his other devices didn’t last long. The Wraith got set up very quickly, thanks in part to an Impromptu Invention from the start. Tempest had good cards too, plus he was able to play Localized Hurricane and Vicious Cyclone early. Legacy did little but Galvanize everyone, every turn. That was enough. Atlantis threw in a Kraken (KO’d a mine - ugh, but could’ve been worse), a Hallway Collapse, and that seaweed card (Legacy obligingly threw away his hand - not that there was much in it anyway), among other things.
Matchup #2 - Voss had a pretty decent start - a Psi Weaver, a Guard and an Ion Lancer. He drew a Frost Hound, which meant his minions were dealing substantial damage from the start, along with some damage reduction. But we were able to dispatch them pretty quickly and knock out the minions as they came. And there were only minions; Wraith’s Eyepiece saw to that. The one Deployment I saw got shuffled to the bottom. And I didn’t see any ships at all. Legacy did a little more this time around, but again Tempest was the big damage dealer (as befits a battle between two nemeses). The Wraith got the kill shot with her Throat Jab.
Matchup #3 - Baron Blade played the Turrets on his first turn. Wraith throat jabbed it and Tempest sent his MDP to the stratosphere. Legacy got his ring and did several Motivational Charges, which were very helpful. Unusually, the flipped side played much slower than the front side. Two force fields, a Backlash Field and an Elemental Redistributor (not all at the same time) will do that to you. It took a long time to get the cards to be able to get rid of all of those. He also got healed up for 10 HP in there. The environment served up back-to-back Fires in the Biosphere, then later back-to-back. Villainous Weaponries and back-to-back Pervasive Red Dusts. But the outcome wasn’t in too much doubt.
Sure, why not? I seem to be doing well. I only wish I was this good. Give me a few days to get to them.
Where was I? Oh yeah…
Matchup #4 - There were some slightly tense moments here. The initial card draws weren't great for any of them. An EPE came out early, before we were completely set up. Legacy did a Heroic Interception, and that along with a couple of defensive cards, meant that Legacy only got hit for 6. Slowly but surely the Tempest and Wraith war machines came online, and Omnitron and all of his drones went down. BTW, I'm still waiting for my first Inspiring Presence. We got a second EPE, but that one didn't last long since we were all set up by then. The Sedative Flechettes were safely stashed on the bottom of the deck, thanks to the Wraith. Tech Singularity came out on the very first turn - a fine time for it, as everyone would agree.
Next is a matchup with Dawn. Let's see if we can make her go away, since she's no good for us…
Matchup #5, take 1 - It didn’t start off too badly; Dawn played Winter, Spring, and THAT CARD first thing. But then she played a lot of ongoings and I had no way to get rid of them. Eventually the citizens and one-shots overwhelmed us. Two consecutive Rivers of Lava did in Legacy, while Summer finished off the other two.
Matchup #5, take 2 - Started with Winter, Assault, and Hammer. Not great, but we overcame it, killed off some other citizens and got her to flip. We shuffled THAT CARD to the bottom of the deck thanks to the Eyepiece and put Sweat on top. Sweat came out all right, but Channel with the Eclipse was in play, and the next play was the other copy of THAT CARD. We couldn’t recover and were overwhelmed by citizens again.
Matchup #5, take 3 - Started with Truth, Sweat, and Assault. This time around Dawn didn’t play any of the really bad one-shots and ongoings, and we found the citizens we wanted to kill easy enough to defeat. Tempest punted Anvil into the stratosphere twice. There were four in the trash on our final turn when Tempest finished off Anvil, Hammer, and Dawn. Victory at last!
Next we fight a familiar foe in a familiar place, but everything has changed…
Matchup #6, takes 1 and 2 - Our favorite madman played the Backlash Field to start in both games. That didn’t help. He played the cards fast and furiously, dealing lots of damage along the way. We couldn’t overcome it.
Matchup #6, take 3 - The Backlash didn’t come until later, but it didn’t help. We took too long to get started.
Matchup #6, take 4 - Finally got the cards to beat him. An early Takedown, plus Heroic Interception slowed Blade down just enough to flip him. Once we did that, a Ball Lightning took out an annoying Backlash card, then came a timely Throat Jab. Legacy was able to Thokk! him to end it. A nice team effort.
Matchup #7 - Cosmitron never really got started. His drones, when he played them, were swatted down quickly. The components never survived to do any damage. We got pretty good cards from the start, along with decent draws. Wagner didn’t show its uglier side to us. The EPEs didn’t do us any damage, thanks to sending them Into the Stratosphere and shuffling them away with Infrared Eyepiece. The kill shot was from Wraith’s Inventory Barrage. Overall we had things well in control, though I could imagine scenarios where they could’ve gotten out of hand.
Bonus Matchup #1 - against Advanced Citizen Dawn (+78) at Insula Primalis (+10), which adds up to +56.
Take 1 - It started with Sweat, Hammer, and Battery. Then, on the second turn, THAT CARD popped up. There were too many Obsidian Fields for us to deal with. Dealing out extta damage is nice, but we were taking more than we were dishing out. We did eventually get her to flip, then got her to flip back. We thought we were getting somewhere when THAT CARD popped up again. Legacy went down, then Tempest. The Wraith survived for several turns, which allowed me to practice my incapacitated hero skills. Alas, there were too many citizens and too much damage from too many different sources for me to completely block, and the team went down.
Take 2 - A better start this time - Battery, Blood, and Luminous Leadership. We got the environment to work in our favor for once. The worst cards were Eyepieced away, if I saw them at all. We did steady damage until Dawn finally went down to Tempest’s Localized Hurricane.
Next is my biggest challenge yet with this crew. How long will it take me to surive it?
Bonus Matchup #2 - against Advanced Grand Warlord Voss (+89) at Silver Gulch, 1883 (+4), which adds up to +61
Takes 1, 2, 3, and 4 - So many minions, so little time… And some of the games threw ships in there, just because I wasn’t getting beaten down enough. Actually in one game I had Voss down to 9 HP when Wraith and Tempest were both knocked out. The clincher was that Legacy had no damage cards, at all. He got one, but by then the minions were starting to file in. Eventually he was overwhelmed and defeated.
P.S. I didn’t attach a screenshot for the first time through because I’m limited for four attachments. Be assured that it’s exactly the same as the others…
Take 5 - We started with a Guard, an Ion Lancer, a Soldier, and a Psi-Weaver. This time we had good luck with our card draws and plays, and neither Voss nor Silver Gulch played anything TOO annoying. Our HPs were low at the end, but Legacy finished Voss off with a Motivational Charge.
This concludes the Cleansing Downpour Challenge. I’d like to thank all three of you for reading. Now it’s time to go back to the Visionary, Tachyon, and the rest of the gang.
Three heroes is pretty rough most of the time but that's a Teamup that should be able to handle quite a bit. Good work downing all of those villains. Especially advanced Voss who despite lack of hero equipment/ongoing destruction can wreck teams.
Thank you both for your kind words. This challenge was quite fun and I learned a few things. I only have the app, so I can’t play with just two heroes.
It's been a while since I've done this, but I decided to get back into it, because why not? I'm a little rusty, so the challenges won't be the most difficult in the world. Let's see how good they are against new opposition.
Matchup #1 is against Plague Rat (-15) at the Pike Industrial Complex (-1). That's -47 total.
Matchup #2 is Gloomweaver (-115) at Atlantis (+52). That adds up to -94.
Matchup #3 is the Ennead (-101) at the Tomb of Anubis (0). That's a hefty -132.
Matchup #4 will be against Akash'Bhuta (-44) at Insula Primalis (+6), for a total of -69.
Matchup #5 will be against Apostate (-55) at the Realm of Discord (-14). It's an even -100 for those keeping track.
and Matchup #6 will be against Skinwallker Gloomweaver (-7) at Silver Gulch 1883 (0). This is projected to be the most difficult of the bunch, but at -38, I should be able to get through it eventually.
In previous games, I've found that this team matches up poorly with The Chairman and The Matriarch, so I'll skip banging my head against those two for now. And I don't like Spite at all, so I'm not playing against him ever.
Matchup #1 - This was a classic damage race that was over in 6 to 8 rounds (I didn't keep careful track, sorry). The Rat didn't play his very worst cards and we had some good cards to work with.
NEXT: Will the Ruins give us fits against Gloomweaver?
