Anyone looking forward to the new season of Doctor Who?
I am. The previews and mannerisms of the new doctor suggest he's more of a throwback, which I would personally love. I think the show could really benefit from slowing down a bit and get away from the Sonic Screwdriver more.
Here's hoping.

Nick and I are still working out how to see it, while still managing to be lazy.
It will be in some theaters.

Or time travel, which ever is easier.
The theatres here are all after the fact, and can't watch it online unless it's illegally done.
Well, let's clarify that…
We'll be watching it online, but we have a VPN with a British IP specifically so spouse can watch her Dr. Who. 
And it is legal. 
I don't own a TV, but my B-i-L has a nice setup and like 8 billion channels so we bring food and watch at his place.

I've never personally had much issue with the Sonic. It is a magic wand, but most of the "science" in the show is gobbledygook anyway. It does seem like the pace is slowing down, and while I've actually enjoyed the high adrenaline action of the last few series, I do think a change of pace will be nice. The people who cheated and peaked at the leaked episodes have all spoken very highly of them, and so I'm pretty optimistic about this new series.
Also, somehow when I saw New Season I knew this thread was probably going to be about Doctor Who.
Looking forward to the new series here, too :D. Now I read this thread, I remember I had a dream abou Doctor Who last night…I think I was Clara (well, I was me, but I looked like Clara and that was my name) and the new Doctor was around somewhere…oh yeah, that was it, something like "This Doctor is more of a luck-based Doctor" like it was his special power or something, and something happened and he conveniently happened to be there or something, I can't really remember. And then there was something about a fight simulator game where you fired fake guns or something but there were Daleks in it and they were real and were converting/kidnapping people, and Eleven was there but he got tangled up under a duvet or something on the floor so couldn't be seen and was only making indistinct mumbling noises when Rose Tyler showed up looking to see if she could sort out the trouble or something, and then she buggered off, and then I was at work trying to wheel a trolley (a books trolley that we use, erm, to push the books around on) into the lift, which for some reason had no ceiling so I could see the mechanisms above it, and it was slowly going downward because the trolley was heavy even though I wanted to go up and the buttons weren't working properly or something. And I think some other stuff may have happened as well.
So umm…yeah. Anyway, new Doctor Who tomorrow, yaaaay :D.
I like the doctor a lot more when he gets creative about solutions and doesn't just sonic his way out of trouble. Patrick Troughton is still my favoite doctor because he had all kinds of bizarre solutions to the littler problems.
I'd also love to see more 2-part stories, I love the old serials since you get so much development of the characters, the new ones are mostly monster of the week stories, which are cool, but I'd like some balance between them.
The main difference I would say is aesthetic. There's really no difference between having the Doctor press buttons on the alien ship saying, "I'm reversing the polarity of the neutron flow." or using the Sonic Screwdriver and saying, "I'm reversing the polarity of the neutron flow." Both are just as creative and do the same thing from a narrative standpoint. I understand where you're coming from though, and I do think they're probably going to take Capaldi in a different direction.
The finale is a two parter. So there's at least that. Having a return to serials would be interesting. The stories would be more complex, but there'd be less of them compared to the current format.
Just finished watching Deep Breath. I thought it was pretty good. I like the dynamic being set up between 12 and Clara. I think I prefer the Eleventh Hour, but series 8 is so far shaping up to be very interesting.
Quite the thinker of an episode. I really enjoyed it. They've done a decent job of transitioning Doctors. Leaving bits of 11 in as things that are fading from 12.

Meh. Too cartoony an opening for me (complete with sound effects 
), it got better as it progressed but I don't think this is an episode on which to judge the series (or the doctor). I'm not sure how the 'final fight' can be anything more than an annoyance, either he's a murderer now or the audience is being teased with no real pay off, and we've had both before.
I like the fact though that the final "fight" wasn't really a fight. It was a logical debate between two inhuman characters who are doing their best to imitate humanity. Whether the Doctor pushed the robot is an interesting question since this is a new Doctor we've never seen before, and the question being asked isn't whether or not there is a situation in which the Doctor will kill but rather how far is the Doctor willing to go to protect the planet and people he loves.
