Player Characters: who will you be?

Yeah, that's been the motivation of the PCs in a few campaigns I've been in.

Though in one case it was subverted in the end: We started out as corporate wageslaves just going to a space station to do our jobs and then trying to survive after things went wrong... but then turned around and sympathized with the AI trying to kill us and turned on our bosses once we found out why the AI was trying to kill us, even though by that point we could have just walked away.

Of course, on the flipside, there was the campaign with the adventuring company where we expertly bilked our client for the maximum amount of fees we could believably bilk him for, all buried in an admirable amount of legalese, once we found out he was from a super-loaded family. Our GM wasn't sure if she should be appalled or impressed.

But in relation to Sentinels, I admit that I'm still looking forward to the RPG lore books in many ways because even after their episodes there's still some characters that come off as "they exist as their job", so I still feel like I want more in-depth info on them. (Though I increasingly feel that in the case of Argent he's more or less LARPing as his job except with entirely serious intent.)

As such, the irony is that the more "normal person" heroes like Absolute Zero often come off as more interesting to me after the podcasts because they actually feel more like actual people outside of their hero jobs.

So, having listened to the recent Blood Magic episode of The Letters Page and having perused the SC RPG Starter Kit, I think I'm starting to flesh out who my first character will be.

Morgan Cutter shouldn't be alive.  Struggling with depression throughout his early teens, Morgan found himself entering high school with little in the way of a support network.  His interests in mythology, the occult, industrial music, and classic literature isolated him from all but a few close friends who shared the same interests.  While warm with these few, Morgan's solitude took its toll on his mental fortitude, spiraling into a self-imposed isolation.

Unfortunately, Morgan's issues went all but unnoticed by his parents, mired in the conflicts surrounding their impending divorce.  Already a latchkey kid, Morgan spent his evenings in effective solitary confinement, making his own meals in an empty house.  That is, however, until his first suicide attempt; at age 17, Morgan opened his wrists with a straight razor, nearly bleeding out in his parents' bathroom before his mother found him.  Morgan was institutionalized at Lincroft Asylum for nearly 3 months, seeking counseling and treatment as his wrists healed.

Upon his release--and now with the coping mechanisms and medication necessary to combat his depression--Morgan found that his friends and family held him closer than ever.  When his friends suggested a midnight seance, followed by a late-night Lenny's run--"Just like old times!"--Morgan was quick to join them.  That night, in St. Ignatius' Cemetery, Morgan and his friends lit up a candle and began chanting from an old book that Esther had bought in a used bookshop.

That's when his suture popped.  A slow dribble of Morgan's blood fell to earth as the group chanted; mystic energy swirled around him, lifting the astounded Morgan into the air.  Panicked, the group scattered and, as the chanting ceased, Morgan dropped back to earth, enervated and breathless.

After a good deal of both research and experimentation, Morgan and his friends came to a strange conclusion:  Morgan was a blood mage, capable of expending life force to manifest arcane power.

If one good thing can be said to have come from Morgan Cutter's suicide attempt, it could be this:  it made Morgan ask himself, "What can only you offer the world?"  Now, he had an answer.  He would embrace this power and use it to help defend against the terrors of the night.  Morgan Cutter would don the mask of The Hemogoblin.

Principle of the Survivor:  You have been granted a second chance at life--something not everyone is lucky enough to receive.  What can you offer the world?  Minor Twist:  How do you still struggle with your mental state?  Major Twist:  What are you willing to give up to ensure that others get their second chance?

Principle of Vitae:  There is a truth that lies in blood, but truth is like a knife that is all blade--it cuts the hand that wields it.  Minor Twist:  What did you learn about blood magic that you did not know, even as you used it?  Major Twist:  Who pays the price for your power?

Not sure how I'd yet stat up The Hemogoblin, but I see very much as a "debuff"-type character, inflicting curses and maledictions (Hinder actions, likely) as well as attack at the cost of his own Health.  He'd likely have an early ability (Green, ideally) that lets him siphon arcane power from foes, using their lost Health to fuel his other abilities.  He's also a character that likely would grow more powerful as blood gets spilled, so I see his status dice as going Green (d6); Yellow (d8); Red (d10).  However, I also tend to view him as very reticent to cause lasting harm or even kill, instead opting to deal himself damage to fuel his spells rather than harm any but the most heinous of foes.

That's quite the thought-out backstory! I was a bit shakey on the part about his suicide atempt and wondering how it would key into a possible hero, but you make it work nicely!

I wonder what his costuming would look like...

Thankee!

I'll readily admit, in working up Morgan's backstory, I was worried about the possibility of "Suicide = superpower", but I think I managed to sidestep that minefield, in favor of "Here's a character who has a traumatic background, is in recovery, and is using his newfound power to give himself purpose.  His suicide attempt may have led him to learning about his powers, but they're not the source of them, and it's not something to be glorified."

I picture a costume that's almost reminiscent of a masked Wiccan/Asgardian from Young Avengers, albeit with a slightly darker color palette.

I'd picture something along Alex Mercer from Prototype working as well, but with the color pallet you have in mind and maybe a longer jacket and more pronounced hood to keep most of his face in shadow. But a classic style like Wiccan could most definitley work nicely.

I'm still working on the full backstory for Jersey Devil, and I still haven't nailed down his look just yet...

Alex Mercer really does make a good touchstone, at that.  Maybe a touch more 'goth' than Alex, though.

I'm trying to nail down one key fact for JD. Should he have come into some sort of contact with the real Jersey Devil and that that meeting leads into him gaining his powers somehow, or should he be going more the Batman route and he's merely using the legend to strike fear into the hearts of criminals...

Kahin Abdillahi, known by the alias Boqor Baranbaro, is a genius-level intellect, inventor and defender of the innocent. While having no formal education he picked up most of his technological skills through trial and error, building and fixing the bits of technology that sustained the small village he and his family lived in during the height of the Somali civil war. With Kahin's technology to back them up the village managed to survive numerous attacks by assorted local militias, who began referring to them as baranbaro - cockroaches - as they were so hard to kill.

These days Kahin, married, his village secure, and just turning twenty, wants to move on. He's saved one small corner of the world, but he knows he can do better. Adopting the name Boqor Baranbaro - King Cockroach, a gesture of pride in his resilience and the resilience of his family - he seeks to demonstrate that with the right help, there is no situation so bad that people cannot survive it.

These are really good. (And I feel like I've heard of Lincroft before somewhere :P)

For the Jersey Devil, I guess it depends on if you want a mystical angle or not. But, one thing that can be kind of fun is leaving it open ended. They met something, they think it was the Jersey Devil, but was it?

I've been polishing up Damocles as well (too many problems with first origin and the Spite episode gave me ideas) but nothing is really ready to formalize yet.

You could also combine the two ideas in a sense, by having the character meet the Jersey Devil and then be inspired by the powers and/or resolve they gain from that meeting to take up a life of fighting crime from the shadows.

I was thinking he would be an Omega the basic story outline I have is like this:

A young boy goes on a trip with family to the Pine Barrens for a camping trip, learns of the legend of the Jersey Devil.

He sneaks out one night to see if it's real, finds/senses SOMETHING, then runs back to camp(falling in several puddles along the way, exposing himself to Isoflux Alpha).

Over time the boy delves deep into the legend of the Jersey Devil, some months later developing powers(still working on what they'll be).

He trains his powers along with is mind and body as he grows up, inspired by Legacy and the Freedom Five to use his new abilities for good.

After his first few outings he attracts the attention of the NJ State Police, and is asked to become a 'consultant', but not before he comes up with a persona to protect his identity...

Aaaaaaand that's what I got so far. Any ideas are more than welcome.

If your going to use Isoflux Alpha , you should consider how his body is affected, 4 of the 5 known Omegas are obviously superhuman. So does you hero have wing, goat features or look like a sort of were-Jersey devil? Can he turn this transformation off and if he can , how much control does he have?

That's what I'm trying to figure out. That up there is just the basic outline of his background, still deciding on key things. Pretty sure he's gonna be able to transform between normal and his 'hero/devil' form, just gotta figure out what exactly I'm doing with it.

Ok. How about this. The character is still a teenager but everybody he interacts with doesn't know because he hides behind his transformed form. He has to juggle teenager problems with superpowers. He transforms by meditation. A good idea might be to draw his transformed form and develop his powers based on that

I was thinking something along the lines of a college graduate at the youngest, but most likely a bit older. Main reason was I figure instead being a 'silent partner' to the police, his secret identity would be a consulting detective for the department that would specialize in 'odd cases'. That way he could get info he needed on crimes, and he'd even be getting paid by the police/state government(I'm not sure who pays consulting detectives in real life). Win/win in my book.

I've really been considering JD transforming, just trying to figure out the specifics. Probably got a good increase in physical power and speed, so he'd probably bulk up. Claws and wings would probably bee cool, and maybe a tail. I'd stay away from giving him a full blown devil head, but vestigl horns might give him a neat look...

I kind of think he'd have good control of his transformations after years of trainining since he was a boy. Most Omega's don't seem to go crazy from their exposure, it just sort of increases the crazy if they already had it.

I think Choke can pass for normal human when she’s not actively manifesting powers. And it’s implied that Judge Mental was an Omega, too.

I'd forgotten Judge Mental. Choke was the one Omega I was saying was not obviously superhuman. In fact before I found out about her I would have said being an Omega means your body changes physically.

@Phantom5613 Nice ideas . The JD is said to have some kind of shriek as well .

Mmhmm. The Jersey Devil's shriek is reported to be deafiningly loud, like a foghorn, and comepletly inhuman. I was thinking fire control, but a sonic shreik might work. I could have it cause a hinder as well, now that I'm thinking about it.

Who knows, maybe I could have both. Depending on character creation rules, of course.

Let's say you give him an 8 dice power called "Screaming". He could then have a multiple attack using min dice in the yellow zone and a focused plus hindering attack in the red.

Was talking both fire and the shriek, but that could work too. :)
