SCUverse Game 3 - Haka, Tempest, Fanatic vs. Kismet in "Time Cataclysm"

INT. - FREEDOM FIVE HQ

The looming figure of HAKA is lounging around the headquarters of the Freedom Five, being regarded with open awe by DEVRA CASPIT and with casual, over-the-glasses appraisal by AMINIA TWAIN.  Dressed in a casual button-down white shirt and tan slacks, rather than his usual furs and loincloth, the Maori nonetheless has his traditional weapons, the Taiaha and the Mere, close at hand in case they are needed.  Though relaxed, he is clearly ready for action.  Suddenly the tentacle-headed alien refugee who goes by the Earther name "Mack Dalton", better known to the American media as TEMPEST, bursts in through the door.

TEMPEST:  "Sorry I'm late…I'm afraid I accidentally destroyed the Earth radio you gave me to stay in touch when I tried to remote-activate it, so I had to find a payphone to check the backup voicemail drop.  I'm not used to such primitive technology, where you actually have to walk over and push a button when the message comes in."

HAKA (amused):  "Primitive?"  (raises eyebrow exactly like Spock)

DEVRA:  "Hey, be nice…"

TEMPEST:  "It's okay, it's an old joke.  He likes comparing me to all of your television aliens.  And he knows that I don't consider him any more primitive than the rest of you."

HAKA:  "Indeed.  He comes from such an advanced culture, having long since evolved beyond the need for such barbaric Earthling concepts as tact."

The big man's tone is clearly jocular; their first meeting at the tail end of "Tempest" established their characterization as friendly rivals and participants in mutual affectionate snarking.  DEVRA (first seen briefly in "Tachyon") is unaware of this, having barely met Tempest and not in Haka's presence.  From the back of the room, AMINIA speaks up in a voice that carries remarkably despite its low volume.

AMINIA:  "Well, never mind all that you two.  Now that you're here, Mr. Dalton, we have a situation.  There have been a series of unsolved burglaries of museum exhibits in various East Coast cities over the past several nights, and the last one was discovered about an hour ago in Centerville, just twenty minutes away from here.  Mr. Wakarewarewa has been eager to head out there ever since the call came in, but you will remember that standard FV protocol dictates that there must always be at least two Licensed Respondents for scenarios involving possible super-activity, and the anomalies relating to the previous thefts suggest that the perpetrator has powers of a yet-to-be-determined nature.  Our insurance premiums are high enough without our Maori friend running off by himself and getting his jaw broken or something."

DEVRA:  "If you need another superhero, I coulda gone out there with him!  I've even been thinking about a codename…what do you think of 'The Unbelievable Utility?"

TEMPEST:  "It makes you sound like an appliance that one might buy off a late-night infomercial…"  (DEVRA looks downcast.)

AMINIA (ignoring Tempest):  "You know very well that you're still not old enough to receive an Extralegal Danger Interdiction license…your parents agreed to this internship so that you could learn from Dr. Stinson, not put your life in jeopardy by running around in pursuit of psychopaths.  We don't need a lawsuit for reckless endangerment, to say nothing of an international incident.  Remember, the eyes of the whole world are on the Freedom Five and their associates; even if the risk is minimal we cannot afford to be seen behaving irresponsibly."

DEVRA:  "Awuh…"

AMINIA:  "So now that you're here, Mr. Dalton, you and Mr. Wakarewarewa should proceed immediately to the site of the break-in.  The 'Wraith' has given you both permission to use her helicopter to get there inside of five minutes, as long as you don't interfere with the pilot."

TEMPEST nods and HAKA gets up from the comically tiny stool he was somehow not crushing beneath his bulk while speaking to DEVRA.  Both heroes proceed to the elevator without further comment.

EXT. - HELICOPTER OVER MEGALOPOLIS.

PILOT:  "Just our luck.  Weather conditions are looking dangerous up ahead, if this keeps up I'm going to have to…"

Tempest sticks one hand out of the window of the helicopter and points imperiously toward the thick clouds that are blowing directly toward the chopper.  At a speed that looks just within the realm of natural possibility, the mass of cumulonimbus lightens, thins, and parts before suddenly shifting winds, clearing the whirlybird's path.

PILOT:  "…nevermind."

AMINIA (over loudspeaker):  "I've followed up with the director of the Centerville History Center…he confirms that the theft of a Puritan-era Sterling-silver spindle was due to a highly improbable series of security failures, suggesting that it does indeed fit our mystery crook's pattern.  In all cases, only one item was stolen, too unique to easily fence and of at best moderate practical usefulness, so the thief's motive would seem to be either artistic, philosophical, or esoteric.  And in all cases, their ability to gain access was seemingly due to a string of unusual coincidences, suggesting a subtle and highly versatile powerset.  You'll need to be on your g…hang on…  …  …Incoming dispatch from Centerville PD!  Super-combat in progress at the intersection of Strong and Fuller Streets!  Two unknown females, one reported to have wings and be armed with a sword, believe it or not, and the other matching the (admittedly rather vague) eyewitness descriptions of a possible suspect linked to three out of the seven robberies.  Your new instructions are to intercept, detain both parties and determine their identities and intentions…priority is to avoid collateral damage and then to prevent severe bodily harm to either combatant.  Third priority is to bring the non-winged one in for questioning; fourth is to determine whether the winged one is an unlicensed vigilante, and proceed accordingly once her intentions are known.  Please acknowledge."

TEMPEST:  "Got it, HQ."

HAKA:  "Understood, Aminia."

PILOT:  "Changing course now, Ms. Twain!  Chopper out.  …Wings, huh?  Bet that'll come in handy, assuming they really work.  It'll be hard enough getting one person to fit back there with you, big guy…no offense."

HAKA:  "None taken."

PILOT:  "I keep telling Miss Mo…er, The Wraith that we might need to have space for as many as six other passengers in this bird at some point…she just said she'll think about it.  Anyway, we're coming up on the battle site now…boy, there they are, and are they ever going at it!  There's no place for me to land, you two will just have to jump out.  I'll hover 100 feet up and drop a ladder when you signal."

TEMPEST:  "Jump, eh?  I guess I'm about to be 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'!"

HAKA:  "Don't worry, little space-buddy!  I'll catch you!"  (Tempest rolls his eyes.)

EXT:  CENTERVILLE

Camera cuts to the outside of the copter as both passenger doors open, then pans down to the street, where FANATIC and KISMET are going at it.  As the faint "boom" of Haka landing can be heard, FANATIC thrusts her sword ABSOLUTION at KISMET, who dodges at the last second.  The sword sticks in a(n in)conveniently placed telephone pole, and KISMET kicks it out of her hand, causing it to skitter away across the street.

KISMET:  "That's a pretty antique you've got, crazy lady!  Think after I'm finished putting you down for your midday nap, I'll hang onto it!"

FANATIC:  "You have taken far too much already, scoundrel!  REPENT!"  (Her bursts into holy fire!)

KISMET:  "Oh, I doubt that'll happen.  And you should do some doubting yourself."  (Her hand goes into her blouse and comes out clutching a small brown disk, which we can't yet see clearly.)

Round One

Kismet - Charmed Scoundrel (70)

In Play: The Talisman [7]

Trash:

Start of Turn:  All heroes doubt themselves for 1.

Play a Card: Karmic Disjunction reveals Karmic Disjunction, Violent Trickster, Shaky Arm and Unlucky Break.  Any one hero takes Shaky Arm.  Unlucky Break is played but has no effect.  The other two are shuffled and returned to the villain deck.  (Since shuffling two cards is impossible, I rolled for it.  Kismet will not get lucky this turn.)

End of Turn: Karmic Disjunction is revealed and shuffled into the villain deck.

In Play: The Talisman [7], Shaky Arm

Trash: Karmic Disjunction, Unlucky Break

Effects: Reduce damage dealt by the Jinxed hero by 1.

Hero HP:  Fanatic 29, Haka 31, Tempest 25.

Fanatic (:cough cough:, this was always like this) has a starting draw of Final Dive, End of Days, End of Days, Final Dive, Holy Nova, Smite the Transgressor. I’ll deck one of the Final Dives and End of Days

Starting Hand: End of Days, Final Dive, Holy Nova, Smite the Transgressor.

I would prefer to not have a shaky arm. Envisioner, are you still doing the cinematic approach to deciding turn order?

Wow tempest got some strange cards…

Now the real tempest has a starting draw of Vicious Cyclone, Cleansing Downpour, shielding winds, lightning slash, Reclaim from the deep and chain lightning.

placing at the bottom shielding winds and vicious cyclone.

Starting hand: Cleansing Downpour, lightning slash, reclaim from the deep and chain lightning.

bottom of deck: Vicious Cyclone, Shielding winds.

I don’t think I should take the shaky arm due to those nice damaging cards in my hand but if need be I’ll take it.

Turn order is exactly as I listed it, with the logic that Fanatic is already engaged with Kismet (has been for several duras, but we'll handwave that part), and Haka jumped out of the helicopter first (whether he actually caught Tempest is up to Tempest's player...I'm pretty sure M'kk's wind powers don't suffice to let him fly, but he could probably at least get a Feather Fall-type effect by generating a hurricane-force updraft beneath himself as he dropped).

One trick that could work is I take shaky arm, then you hit me with the 4 damage from chain lightning to get rid of it. This will help keep Kismets damage output down, it will mean no one has to keep the jinx for long, and I get closer to death to use stuff like Wrathful retribution and my resurrection armor.

Bouncing from Haka’s arms, Tempest aproaches the winged woman.

I’m good with using the chain lightning that way. What environment again? Is it rook city?

Never mind. Time cataclysm.

Fanatic lunges at Kismet, only to discover an uncharacteristic lack of confidence in her own movements. “What foul sorcery is this?” Fanatic asks, as she fumbles around trying to attack Kismet without success.

EXT. - CENTERVILLE

As Haka moves in to battle the red-haired, fishnet-clad rapscallion, the winged woman who had been engaged with her before backs off, eyes closed and hands folded as if in prayer.  Tempest stays back and keeps an eye on both Earthling "females" (there are no such creatures on his planet and he seems to look warily upon them, particularly the one with wings who was armed a minute ago), eager to see how they react to what he considers a very minor degree of electrocution.  Suddenly, behind the technically-genderless alien who is nonetheless comfortable being called "him", a great hulk of construction machinery, which was parked innocuously at a nearby building site, abruptly rumbles to life of its own accord!

Start of Turn

Play a Card:  Charging Triceratops Rampaging Bulldozer.  Fixed Point to the bottom.

End of Turn

In Play:  Rampaging Bulldozer [9] - DR 1, deals 3 damage to second-lowest other target at SOET.

Trash:  Nothing.

EXT. - CENTERVILLE

The driverless bulldozer roars slowly toward the street - and the heroes.  Meanwhile, the woman with the red-and-black hair glances at the musclebound man in front of her, and the lightning-flinging tentacled blue figure some distance away.

KISMET:  "Well, I'm a popular girl tonight!  First a sword, and now a spear-club thingy, what's the word?  Taiaha, that's it…did you two both escape from the same Renaissance festival?  Better take it easy though, Steroids…that fancy stick of yours must be getting heavier with each swing, from the way your veins are throbbing."

Round Two

Kismet - Charmed Scoundrel (63)

In Play: The Talisman [3]

Trash:  Karmic Disjunction, Unlucky Break, Shaky Arm

Start of Turn:  All heroes take 1 annoying chatter damage.

Play a Card: Shaky Arm enters play in front of Haka.  Impending Disaster goes to the bottom - I don't believe I remembered the draw-two rule during Kismet's first round, but this time I'm remembering both it and my shuffle-exception, so ID remains on the bottom even after Kismet shuffles the rest of her deck at the end of the turn.

End of Turn: Weak Heart is revealed and shuffled into the villain deck.

In Play: The Talisman [3], Shaky Arm

Trash: Karmic Disjunction, Unlucky Break, Shaky Arm [Haka]

Effects: Reduce damage dealt by the Jinxed hero by 1.

Hero HP:  Fanatic 24, Haka 32, Tempest 24.

Fanatic manages to recover her nerves. “You are bold, criminal. But your wrongdoing shall not go unpunished!” She strikes out at Kismet, and this time her aim is true.

Fanatic

Hand: End of Days, Final Dive, Holy Nova, Smite the Transgressor

Deck: ?x30, End of Days, Final Dive, Absolution, Smite the Transgressor

Start of Turn:

Play a Card: playing Brutal Censure against Kismet (61), drawing a card [Sacrosanct Martyr, Consecrated Ground]. Sacrosanct goes to the bottom of the deck, Consecrated ground goes to my hand.

Draw a Card: [Chastise, Embolden] Keeping Embolden

End of Turn:

HP: 24

Deck: ?x26, End of Days, Final Dive, Absolution, Smite the Transgressor, Sacrosanct Martyr, Chastise

Trash: Brutal Censure

Comments: Never mind, Tempest is going to take the bulldozer hit this round.

You should perhaps remove the Shaky Arm part from your start of turn, as it clearly no longer applies to you (just Haka).

Sorry I took so long to reply,

Start: Nothing

Play: Dominion

Power: Taiaha Kismet & The Bulldozer

Draw: Taiaha

End: Nothing

------------------------------------

HP: 31

In Play: Dominion, Taiaha

Hand: Haka of Restoration, Savage Mana, Enduring Intercession

Deck: Rampage, Dominion, ???

Don't worry about it I was at a tournament all saturday so I wouldn't have been able to take my turn.

"So Haka looks like we're going after that scoundrel rather than that wing girl."- Tempest

Tempest

Start: nothing

Play: Otherworldly Resilience

Power: nope

Draw: Flash flood, Grevious hail storm (hail storm to the bottom)

End: none

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP: 24

in play: otherworldly resilience

Hand: Flash Flood, Reclaim from the Deep, Cleansing downpour, lightning slash

Deck: hail storm, shielding winds, cyclone, shielding winds and ????

Notes: As luminos said I'll take the hit from the bulldozer. Now that I have flash flood the environment isn't as big of a deal but I think I'll hold on to it until something less friendly than the average rampaging bulldozer comes along.

Not sure why you didn't Squall on your turn, Tempest, but I'm going to treat the decision as binding, rather than have to recalculate the entire villain turn.

EXT. - CENTERVILLE

A wicked gleam sparkles in the club-clad slattern's eye.  "Taking sides, are we boys?  Well that's okay, I have a few allies of my own.  I call the first one 'Trixie'!"  With that, the tattooed woman artfully dances out of the way as the Bulldozer rolls onto the sidewalk and smashes into the "avenging angel"!  Being taller than the other components, Haka gets a good look inside the empty cab of the Bulldozer, and sees as a pair of foam dice hanging from the rear-view mirror of the vehicle vibrate along the mirror and finally fall off, dropping onto the drive shaft and shifting it into a different gear.  The dozer begins turning in place, as if orienting on its next target; three lights blaze from the front of the cab, one high on each side and one low in the middle, their beams stabbing through the stirred-up dust to form three visible rays, like two long horns and a short one below and between them.

Time Cataclysm A Normal Day In Centerville

In PlayCharging Triceratops Rampaging Bulldozer.

Trash:  Nothing.

Deck: 13 x ?, Fixed Point

--------------------------------------------------------

Start of Turn: Bulldozer crashes into Fanatic for 3.

Play a Card:  Tendrils of Madness enters play (it does not represent a distinct target in terms of the game setting; if you attack the Tendrels, your flavor text should just describe you bonking Kismet on the head or something).  Rift of Time to the bottom of the environment deck.

End of Turn: Tendrils of Madness deals 1 infernal damage to Kismet [55] and increases her damage by +1 for a round.

--------------------------------------------------------

In Play:  Rampaging Bulldozer [7] - DR 1, deals 3 damage to second-lowest other target at SOET.  Tendrils of Madness [7] - deals 1 damage to highest-HP target at EOET and gives it +1 to damage until next SOET.

Trash:  Nothing.

Deck: 11 x ?, Fixed Point, Rift in Time.

EXT. - CENTERVILLE

The two dark-skinned women separate at last, the black-haired warrior siding with Tempest and Haka while the ginger hooligan dances aside, smiling impishly.  "You losers are really starting to get on my nerves.  Just give it up; you can't win this, it's not in the cards.  I'm a Gypsy, you know; destiny is my little bitch.  Sorry about your whole 'god' shtick, princess, but I'm the one calling the shots, not Him; if you're trusting someone else to catch you when you fall, then you and the ground are going to be seeing a lot of each other."  Despite the grit clogging the air and coating the three bedraggled heroes, Kismet's perfectly white teeth sparkle in the afternoon sun.

Round Two

Kismet - Charmed Scoundrel [55]

In Play: The Talisman [3], Shaky Arm (Haka)

Trash:  Karmic Disjunction, Unlucky Break, Shaky Arm

Deck:  19 x ?, Impending Disaster

--------------------------------------------------------

Start of Turn:  All heroes take 2 aesthetic discouragement damage, except Tempest who takes only 1, since he's largely immune to feeling dirty and ugly while surrounded by Earthlings.

Play a Card: Two Left Feet enters play in front of Fanatic.  Weak Heart to the bottom of the deck.

End of Turn:  Kismet gets lucky!  (Very much so, in fact, since this is a straight pull, not a two-and-choose, and it's the best card in her deck.)  Lady Luck enters play.

-------------------------------------------------------

Kismet - Charmed Scoundrel [55]

In Play: The Talisman [3], Shaky Arm [Haka], Two Left Feet (Fanatic), Lady Luck

Trash: Karmic Disjunction, Unlucky Break, Shaky Arm

Effects: Reduce damage dealt by Haka by 1.  Whenever Fanatic plays a card, she deals herself 1 melee damage.  If a villain card would be destroyed, either it isn't or a Lucky card enters play to replace it.  Increase any damage dealt by Kismet this round by 1.

Deck:  16 x ?, Impending Disaster, Weak Heart

Hero HP:  Fanatic 22, Haka 30, Tempest 23.

I didn't want anything from the environment to come out and kill the talisman before we were ready for it to swap. Now that I think about it there aren't many things in the cataclysm deck that do damage to lowest targets and if they did it would probably be 3 damage. Oh well, what is done is done. Also I said that I would take the damage from the bulldozer... if it was changed for script reasons that is cool too. I don't think Luminos cares too much.

One of the SCUverse rules is that if HP are tied, I decide rather than the heroes.  More cinematic that way.  Tempest is tougher, so Fanny gets hit.  (I was tempted also to rule that the damage bonus for "Tendrils" would increase ALL damage instances not intentionally caused by heroes, including the self-damage from Two Left Feet, under the theory that Kismet is responsible for everything that happens in this battle.  I may do it that way in a future "super-advanced" game with her.)

Fanatic takes a step back, and silently stares down Kismet. Then, she launches into another attack, paying no regard of her own safety, seeking to throw off this charmed thief’s luck with sheer audacity.

Fanatic

HP: 19 (If I calculated it wrong, let me know, but I think should be -3 from bulldozer and -2 from Kismet)

In Play:

Hand: End of days, Final Dive, Holy Nova, Smite the Transgressor, Aegis of Resurrection, Consecrated Ground, Embolden

Deck: ?x26, End of Days, Final Dive, Absolution, Smite the Transgressor, Sacrosanct Martyr, Chastise

Trash: Brutal Censure

Start of Turn:

Play a Card: Play Consecrated Ground and take 1 damage from Two left feet (18), try to destroy Lady Luck (pending a check to see if a lucky card gets revealved), and deal 1 damage to Kismet (54), The Talisman (2), and Tendrils of Madness (6).

Use a Power: Base power against Kismet (52)

Draw a Card: [Chastise, Undaunted] I deck Chastise and keep undaunted.

End of Turn:

HP: 18

In Play:

Hand: End of days, Final Dive, Holy Nova, Smite the Transgressor, Aegis of Resurrection, Embolden, Undaunted

Deck: ?x24, End of Days, Final Dive, Absolution, Smite the Transgressor, Sacrosanct Martyr, Chastise, Chastise

Trash: Brutal Censure, Consecrated Ground

Additional Effects: take 1 damage each time when I play a card.
