The Freedom Five of Alternate Earths

Between Shattered Timelines, La Capitan's travels , and the upcoming OblivAeon crisis, we've seen alternate timeline and alternate universe versions of many of the Heroes and Villains.  With "Be the Gate" in the ARG and subsequent comments, we know that many of these alternates are present at some point during the battle against OblivAeon

So I've been playing a little thought experiment. If you pulled the Freedom Five from an alternate universe to battle OblivAeon, who would they be?

Guidelines (feel free to ignore if they're getting in your way):

1) Only characters who have (or will) appear in official SotM products

2) No more than:
2 Heroes from the Core Set
1 Hero from any one expansion (RC, IR, ST, V, WC, OblivAeon, Void Guard)
        2 Heroes from the mini-expansions

3) No more than 2 Villains-turned-Heroes (Stuntman, Benchmark, and the OblivAeon Heroes do not count against this limitation)

My current favorite:
The Freedom Five of Earth Z-23:

Captain Cosmic (Leader, Co-Founder)
Ra (Co-Founder)
Fanatic (Co-Founder)
Calypso
Idealist

Alternate Freedom-V of Earth 72-A

Dawn (Not a citizen) Leader.

Expatriette (Probably rebranded something like Crackshot)

Visionary

Setback

Atum

In this version Dawn's daughter is taken from her, and her search to find her turns her into a hero.  When she finally finds her daughter they team up with the Poweful Psychic that brought them together to face the great trials Visionary warns them are coming.

Dawn recruits many other members, and they come and go, but Setback and the last survivor of the Ennead, Atum are the most notable.  There's a whole theme of facing your past, as the Citizens of the sun follow a charismatic savior after Dawn leaves them, who turns out to be evil and Atum becomes a hero after leading his cohorts and friends to their demise.

Freedom Five of Earth-30

Paladin (the heroic Apostate seen on Be the Gate)

Hurricane (aka Tempest)

Parse

Tachyon

Omnitron-U

I love that you have the story behind the formation of the team. Awesome!

Legacy

Legacy is, as in Freedom Four #1, defeated by Baron Blade's serum, and tries to put a team together to stop him. He talks to the military, seeking the Bunker suit, but it's gone rogue. He promises to track it down and put a stop to its pilot's reign of terror, and in return the military offer him a top-secret project, a supersoldier who's been working for them for a couple of years now...

Choke

His second pick is an old friend, a woman who has, ever since her awakening, used her powers to heal the sick and help the poor and needy. Legacy convinces her to join the good fight, temporarily at least. She often flies off between missions to keep up her missionary work, but is always there in a crisis.

Redeemer

The trio make their way to Blade's Mobile Defense Platform; while Choke takes out the drill, Redeemer and Legacy confront the mad Baron. Legacy is hit full-force by the serum, and although Redeemer manages to subdue the Baron and most of his troops, it does not look good for them...

Their saviour steps through a portal that hadn't been there a moment before. One hand glows with eldritch energies, the other appears to be metallic. she grabs hold of the Baron, and then with a flash of brilliant white, the three heroes are on the shore, alive, and the woman is gone.

She returned a few days later for a formal introduction. Her name is Faye Diamond; after stumbling through a temporal portal she'd created in the early years of her training, she'd ended up in a distant future, and lost an arm to a horrible rat creature. A machine called Con fixed her up though, and now she travels the timestreams with Con's assistance, using magic and her cybernetics to take down wanted targets. That said, Con's been unusually quiet recently, and with nothing better to do she offers to join the Freedom Three (while she's not off hunting, of course).

Mists of Time

Later, the team receives a coded message from Insula Primalis. A remorseful Citizen wants out, and he warns of an impending attack on Megalopolis from Dawn's army. As the Dark Wardens move in to protect the city, the Freedom Four attempt the extraction of the man who would become their fifth member...

The Hammer

Time-travelling Nightmist?  That is too good.  If only we had some bounty cards with spell numbers, that deck would actually work well.

Earth 9323:
After the conquest of the world by the Citizens of the Sun lead by Citizen Dawn and her husband Citizen Legacy. 5 of heroes of the resistance have come together to overthrow this oligarchy of the superpowered and restore liberty: The Freedom Five.
Their leader is the hero known as Luminary. Her scientific genius gives the resistance a fighting chance.
She is joined by 2 of the last surviving members the resistance’s most decorated unit… the Ironclad Battalion. Bunker and Bullet Train fight to avenge their fallen comrades.
Rook City’s greatest defender The Wraith has always preferred to work alone however given the dire circumstances she has agreed to join this cause and has even recruited her mentor Black Fist to come out of retirement and join on as well.
The Freedom Five are the Heroes who will defend the world from the tyranny of the Super!

Mirror Earth

Faced with the implacable strength of the dastardly Legacy of Evil, the brilliant inventor LUMINARY seeks out a team. She first looks to the United States military. While Luminary feels secure with her own technological capabilities, she wants to augment them with a crack infiltration agent. The military puts her in touch with K.N.Y.F.E.: ROGUE AGENT.

Now, rounding out the information-gathering aspect of the team, Luminary finds herself turning beyond science to the psychic realm. The vaunted and ethically revered researchers of Project Cocoon happily introduce Luminary to their most enthusiastic volunteer, the DARK VISIONARY.

Luminary has worked with heroes of many stripes in the past. To battle Legacy of Evil, she knows that she’ll need every resource at her disposal. So she decides to meet an old friend, recruiting the hyper-rich, high-society vigilante known as STUNTMAN. With his Hollywood bona fides and his leading-man salary, he not only brings firepower to the team, but also connections and finances.

Finally, not all members of the Freedom Five came to the group through a concerted recruitment. One of them feel into the company of the courageous heroes by accident. After a debilitating injury at the hands of Legacy of Evil, Luminary applied her considerable technical skills to develop a serum that would enable LUCKY STRIKE (that’s LegaSetback from “Be the Gate,” right?) to master his fortune-manipulating powers.

Together, the five heroes gather at Wagner Moon Base to stop Legacy of Evil from culminating his plan to pull Mars into a collision course with the Earth…

EDIT: I know I don’t quite follow the original rules. I was trying to “mirror” the Freedom Five and their origin story as much as I could think of to do!

Actually, Lucky Strike is Setback in Quanda? Ahora!.  That's what the kanji on his chest reads, or so I have been told.

The Freedom Five of Earth Pi

In this reality, one of Wage Master's games removes all of the traditional heroes from the earth Except for Guise. Knowing that he is a hero from a card game based on a super hero world, he travels to the unexpected environment decks and recruits heroes into his new freedom five team to keep the earth alive long enough for the Wage Master to lose his game and return the other heroes to Earth Pi.

Guise (mini)- The rediculous leader of the team, Guise in this universe tends to be completely crazy and yet give advise to others that actually makes a lot of sense but is often ignored because...well, he's Guise.

Char (shattered)- Freed from the Block, Char thought he would simply escape and watch the world burn. But then he found, as Guise promised, that fighting bad guys really was fun. Over the course of his escapades, he has begun to have feelings for the group's secretary Amelia that may be changing him for the better.

Anubis (infernal) - The world is unbalanced without Ra to protect it, and so Anubis has assumed the role of protector against the the horrors that would destroy it. Armed with the relics of his tomb and the powers of Egypt, Anubis fights for balance above all else.

Ember Shaman (villains)- When the Magmarian people were wiped out by Baron Blade, only the Ember Shama survived. Not wanting to see a similar fate befall the people of the surface, the Ember Shaman uses his powers to protect the weak and liberate the opressed. He is easily the moral compass of the group.

Mr. Chomps (mini) - Despite Guise's best efforts, the Kraken refused to leave Atlantis. Fortunately in the Freedom Five tower, one of Unity's raptor bots was still alive. Mr. Chomps misses his mistress and wants her to be proud of him when she gets back, so he fights along side the others as a full member and can even talk now thanks to a run-in with Chokepoint.

Oh, that makes sense. Do we know a name for LegaSetback?

Following no rules, let's have my imagination go wild...

Earth 67-tau :

*The Freedom Flames

An all female team of super-heroins, they are respected as the maindefenders of humanity against all kind of menace.

Thermodynamics : (Absolute Zero' deck, Super Scientist Tachyon's base power) After almost dying in a terrible lab accident, Dr Meredith Stinson built a special suit to contain her near absolute zero temperature. To keep herself active and avoid falling into depression, she united the heroes now know as the Freedom Flames when the villain known as The Rook tried to poison the water supplies of Megalopolis with her gene altering drugs.

The Avenger : (The Operative with Mr Fixer's deck)  Former hitwoman of the Rook's organization, she joined the FF after the Rook killed Black Fist, her former sensei.

BIrdsong : (The Matriarch, with Visionary's deck modified for Sonic damage) Dr Stinson's cousin Lilian wa the leader of the goth music famous band "The Undead Poet's Society" . One day, the villain Terror Mask attacked during a concert. Lilian managed to steal his mask, and used it to defeat him. Unable to get the mask out, she now uses his powers to modulate her power ful voice - and fights the constant visions of future doom he keeps feeding to her.

Citizen Scale : ( Expatriette with Skryscraper's deck) Daughter of Outlaw Dawn, the leader of an agressive anti-supers terrorist organization, she was born with ability to change size. Her mother tried to kill her once she discovered this unholy ability, but her father managed to snatch her away, dying in the process. Adpoted and rised by Vanessa Long's parent, she chose to call herself a "citizen", showing to all that super-powered humans were an integral part of society. She worked alone with Vanessa for a few years before answering the call of Thermodynamics and joining the team.

Citizen Crowd : (Visionary with Proletariat's abilities combined with Ermine's) Vanessa Long was born with the power to create clones of herself. Her parents managed to escape the Outlaws' plans to study her in their hidden laboratory, adopting Scale on their way to freedom. They rised the two girls in secret - until they were old enough to decide to fight against the Outlaws and for the integration of Supers into society. The two "citizens" as they called themselves became spies, operating under the radar until their heard the call of the FF and became public personas.

Super Sentai GoGo Cutie Megawonder : (the Idealist crossed with Bunker) A young girl with the ability to materialize her thoughts, she joined the FF as an intern/test subject for Dr Stinson. Big fan of anime and super sentai, she now helps them from time to time, materializing weapons and giant robots out of thin air. The others are very protective of her, as she tends to see super-heroic adventures as a game and not as serious business.

Other characters :

- The Rook is Maia Montgomery. When she inherited from her father the role of Chairman of the Organization, a criminal ring based in Rook City, she changed their modus operandi from simple criminal activities to research in super powered crime, withe goal of taking over the world.

- Ivan the Magnificient is the Rook's chief scientist, a genius inventor who created altering drugs able to turn normal humans in super-powered beings.

- The Officer was Ivan's most succesful experiment. Paul Parsons is a born leader who now possesses superhuman intelligence and tactical sense. His daughter inherited his altered genes, and developed powers of her own - he his currently training her to become the Rook's chief executioner.

I just remembered I came up with some promo ideas for each hero a while back and a few were based around an alternate Freedom 5 of sorts figured I'd share them here.  Note the powers are mostly untested, hope you all enjoy!

Universe 999:

The heroes called Legacy, The Wraith, Bunker, Tachyon, and Absolute Zero have long defended the world as The Freedom Five.  However, these heroes have all vanished under mysterious circumstances.  Now those who were the closest to them have banded together to track down and rescue the missing heroes.  When the situation is truly dire it's time to cry havoc and let slip THE DOGS OF WAR!

Felicia Parsons has been preparing to take on the role of Legacy for her entire life.  Now with her father missing her time has come.

Beacon- The Legacy of Tomorrow: HP - 29

Power: Brash Leadership: Put a One-shot from your trash into play. Increase damage dealt to Legacy by 1 until the start of your next turn.

Unity has worked with the Freedom Five for years and always wanted to be a member.  It's not the circumstances she would have hoped for but she's ready to step up.

Unity- Desperate Times: HP - 26

Power: Cannibalize: Play a card. Destroy a Mechanical Golem.  If no cards are destroyed this way, destroy an equipment card.

Dana Bertrand is understandably very upset that her wife is missing and is determined to get her back no matter the risks.  Wearing the highly dangerous power suit once used by the villain Friction, Dana will serve as Tachyon in her wife's absence.

Tachyon - High Voltage: HP - 26

Power: Lightning Speed: Tachyon deals each non-hero target and herself 2 lightning damage.  Move a burst card from your trash to the bottom of your deck.

Kim Howell has worked with the Freedom Five on many occasions and there's no-one better suited to finding the missing heroes than the master data-analyst.  After a recent injury has left Parse unable to actively fight herself, Parse monitor's the battle remotely acting as the team's mission control.

Parse - Watchdog - HP 25 (I have to alternate versions of this where Parse is not a target herself and has a setup card like The Sentinels but I'll post the simple version here.)

Power: Ctrl Alt Delete: Draw 2 cards. Discard a card. 1 other hero deals 1 target 0 irreducible projectile damage.

The Bunker Suit was just sitting there gathering dust, what a waste!  Luckily Unity has a solution; using some scrap-metal and some Omnitron components she's made the suit fully robotic. Operated by Parse remotely, Omni-Bunker serves as her eyes, ears, and fists on the ground.

Omni-Bunker - HP 27

Power: Mode Shift: Move 1 Mode Card from your trash or hand into play.

Those are some great powers, Dandolo! Also,

I love the idea of a non-target Oracle/Overwatch mission control type hero! Now that I think of it, I kind of can’t believe they didn’t do that very thing at some point. What a great trope to get into the Sentinels format.

Was the setup card something like this?

"At the start of the game, reveal cards from the top of Parse’s deck until two Ongoings are revealed. Put them into play. Discard the other revealed cards.

When one of your Ongoing cards would be destroyed, you may discard a card. If you do, prevent that destruction.

If you have no Ongoing cards in play, flip your character card to the incapacitated side."

That would be brutal against anything with mass ongoing destruction (devestating aurora, and Omnitron's darts come to mind)

You could add something like "when one of your ongoings is destroyed, the rest of your ongoings become indestructable for the rest of that turn"

I think the discard bit is plenty.  More than that, and this Hero would become unkillable!

I do really like the idea of an "Oracle" Parse, though.  That's a great concept.

Since you asked it was:

Watchdog Parse

Setup: At the start of the game put Watchdog's Character Card into play active side up. Shuffle the hero deck and draw 4 cards.  Then place this card next to another active hero.

Game Play: Threat the name of a hero next to this card as Parse in addition to thier ordinary hero name.  When that hero is incapacitated, Flip Watchdog's Character Card and remove all of your non-character cards from play.

Watchdog: HP {}

Power:  Ctrl Alt Delete: Draw 2 cards. Discard a card. Parse deals 1 target 0 irreducible projectile damage.

<o:p></o:p>

You can pick an hero to be Parse's "agent in the field" but  thematically  Omni-Bunker would be the best choice.

edit: I was inspired to add 1 more hero to the team:

During one of The Wraith's early encounter's with the her nemesis Spite, something very unusual happened.  A young boy named Thiago dressed in a Legacy costume attempted to confront the villain.  Obviously, this was incredibly dangerous.  After the Wraith saved the boy, she realized he would not be dissuaded from trying this sort of thing again.  So it was reluctantly that The Wraith decided to train Thiago and take him under her wing.  To Maia's surprise, Thiago not only picked martial arts up very quickly. Even more surprising, he proved incredabliy gifted at keeping all The Wraith's gear in working order.  Thiago insisted his hero name be "Hellhound" but when not out defending Rook City Maia calls him by another name: "my very own Mr. Fixer."  No matter what name he's called Thiago is eager addition to the Dogs of War.  (Note: in this universe Slim never returned to Superheroics after his Black Fist days.)<o:p></o:p>

Hellhound a.k.a. Mr. Fixer: HP: 27<o:p></o:p>

Power: Double-edged Strike: Mr. Fixer deals 1 target and himself 1 melee damage.  You may destroy 1 of your non-character cards; if you do, you may destroy 1 villain Ongoing Card.<o:p></o:p>

Here's my take on the Freedom Five of earth 427:

After the soviet agent "Blade" went rogue and began his plan to crash the moon into the earth, Megalopolis' greatest heroes united to stop him. They succeeded, but Blade came back when they least expected bombing the Freedom Tower, killing 7. The Freedom Five were killed along with their intern and Blade himself, with only the assistant surviving barely.

-With the loss of the major superhero team in America, Revocorp quickly stepped into the limelight. BENCHMARK began assembling a new team to continue and honor the Freedom Five's dream.

-To show their trust to the Soviets, Benchmark personally invited EVERYMAN, a super soldier with the ability to clone himself, to the new Freedom Five.

-Next, Benchmark recruited FILTER's premier operative, AGENT KNYFE.

-Along with new contemporary heroes, he also invited a "classic" vigilante out of retirement, Rook City's very own BLACK FIST.

-To round out the team he invited the sole survivor of the Freedom Tower bombing. Aminia Twain was splashed with toxic chemicals in Tachyon's lab, giving her reality altering powers. When Twain recovered from her wounds, she joined the team sporting a metal mask, the SECRETARY OF JUSTICE was ready to serve!

Will this team be able to stand as a worthy successor to the original five? What fates will befall them? Is Revocorp truly ready to shed their shady past for true heroism? Find out all these answers and more in FREEDOM FORCE #1!

It might just have been a forum post, but somewhere I saw the name Breakthrough. I think it's very fitting. It implies super strength,is a play on Setback and also kind of reminds you of the Legacy powers making a new 'breakthrough' each generation.

That was just me, rather than anything official.

I'm glad you liked it, though - I was very pleased with the name for all those reasons!
