The Scholar

My only problem with these previews is that it seems hard to decipher how he is going to work. I would rather previews included the villain mechanics card, and a few of the heroes combos, so we get an idea on how it works...yet again dreaming is free :p

Drstein, there is a reason they don't include any mechanics or cards:  Those are subject to change during playtest.  Villain mechanics can be (and have been) tweaked repeatedly, card combos get changed (whole cards get created and removed during playtest sometimes), and the final polished product is sometimes very different from the v1 and v2 files (which is what a kickstarter preview would be based on).

If KS previews included mechanics, then either:

People would be disappointed and claim false advertising when those previewed mechanics were not the same as the actual release

OR

>G would be locked in to releasing the mechanic as-previewed, and thus release a potentially less-than-ideal product.

Neither is really a good option.

You people just have to let your imagination flow. Obviously >G has a hell of an imagination. See if you can match them!

and YAY on playtester. I know my buddy in town also signed up for playtester so we'll have to do some games.

I for one am really excited about this hero and not just because we share the same first name. He has the philosopher's stone therefore he has immortality, or so I'm led to believe. He's probably seen alot of things in his time and just wants to relax on his boathouse and enjoy things but won't hesitate helping the heroes. And yes he has the stone so he could technically have whatever he wants but that would bring attention to him. Just being how he is, is probably more comfortable and it gives him the seclusion it seems he likes. Just my two cents there

I'm really seeing him being just a support hero, but what kind of support is the question. Obviously, we can assume he's going to be changing things, most likely damage types, but what else, I have no idea.

He has the philosopher's stone therefore he has immortality

I guess he won't be needing a flip side then.  Maybe >G can sell that space for advertising. :)

Or rather have him smilling in his underwear with a crack shot of :"What do really thought... punk ?"

Whereas everyone else's incapacitated side shows them in some kind of pain/suffering, his incapacitated side will just be him being even more relaxed.

Here's hoping that his nemesis is 'The Unruly Student' and dresses like like Angus Young. Or perhaps some Billy Bunter-like evildoer... 'beware the fat owl of tuckshop crime!'

what if the Scholar has some strange unexpected mechanic like Nightmist's or the argent Adept's? Ongoing cards with icons (based on various metals maybe) that when in play together in the right combination interact to do stellar things... he could be, and i'd guess he is, something totally from left field...

Is The Scholar a nod to Hoenheim from Full Metal Alchemist?

He reminds me of Ben from The Venture Brothers Halloween Special.

He's immortal (presumably), he's casual, he doesn't sweat the small stuff.  I don't really see much of Hoenheim in the guy.  He seems pretty original as far as I can tell.

Hoenhein is immortal (well, almost), he's casual, he's a philosopher stone, he's got the beard and the hairstyle, and he's got blonde/brown hair. I find them rather similar.

I always saw him being a terrible father to his children.  I didn't watch too much of the show, but I think he's got too much blatantly awful tragedy going on in his life for The Scholar to be a straight up homage.  Scholar seems to be a bit more zen and without all of the drama.

Might be him making a bigger stain on his shirt.

Perhaps The Scholar is if Hoenhien was more like The Dude than a tormented soul. If so, That'd be fine with me. Though I'm always a big fan of new Heroes. I guess we'll have to wait another 6 months though....

Well Hoenhiem was the philosophers stone, The Scholar has the philosophers stone.  Honestly there are plenty of philosopher stone stories that I doubt he is based on Hoenhiem, but I would not be surprised if there is a Fullmetal reference or two in his deck.

His image reminds me of Gary Gygax (a cocreator of D&D - also appears in animated format in an episode of Futurama)

That's a *rolls dice* good observation.
