Variant Unlock: Scholar of the Infinite

Got the unlock.

Team was Scholar, Fanatic, Haka, ExPatriette, and Argent Adept

Gloomweaver in Relam of Discord.

I used Alchemical redirection to incap Scholar, but the scholar didn't have any cards out at the time.  In the case of Truthseeker I know I didn't use it on Gloomweaver himself.

The turn he went down I had Haka Savage mana two of the three relics into the third getting a relic victory at the start of the Villain turn.

EDIT: Checked the log: I was able to play all three of his forms.  Although the Liquid and Energy forms  were briefly there, most of the time I was in Iron form.  It also seemed like I played each card at least once.

Just unlock but wasn't taking good notes.

fought gloomweaver on Mars. ( so based off above this is not environment dependent.)

scholor incapped by cultist. Only liquid and energy forms came out the entire time. Iron only was discarded. None of the forms in play never destroyed. The redirection card, bring your own gear and ongoing that does damage and draw in play. Unlocked at victory.

thoughts: scholar need to be incapped and win. Doesn't require all forms in play.

May depend on number of cards discarded over game? Not sure if anyone has been keeping count on that.

Unlocked Scholar.

Nightmist, AA, Scholar, and Ra in Insula Primalis vs. Gloomweaver.

Played 4 elemental cards:  Solid to Liquid x1, Mortal Form to Energy x 4

Didn't play Truth Seeker at all.

Used Alchemical Redirection to redirect damage to the Scholar (which defeated him).

All allies dropped below 10 hp at one point before Scholar died.  I think just before his redirection.

Defeated Gloomweaver.

Unlocked.

Scholar, Dark Viz, NM, Tempest, and AG  Legacy.  Gloomweaver in Atlantis.

I was specifically testing to see if elemental forms were a requirement, so I intentionally did not use any at all during the game.  It wouldn't be a good proof if I didn't unlock him though, so I went out of my way to use every other card and power in his whole deck.  It was a rediculously long game, and everybody had to shuffle their trash back into their deck at least once.  Hero HP was all over the board, from <10 to max, but the whole team wasn't ever all in danger at the same time.

Played Redirection just before NM threw down Oblivion, and that took Scholar out.  On the next turn, took out Gloomy with another Oblivion.  Scholar came before her in turn order, so he did use his incap power once (to let Tempest use a power and do damage), but I don't know if that matters.

I'm also leaning toward the idea that he needs certain other people on the team, but I haven't seen anything conclusive posted.  I'm thinking there might be a requirement like just a certain number of other "mystical" type heroes on the team.  Like AA, NM, Viz, etc.  That's just a theory though, and I don't think we have enough evidence yet to support that.

We've already proven that environment doesn't matter.

Do we know for a fact that you have to be fighting Gloomy?  Or is that just speculation since it works?  I've had so much proactice fighting him to get Dark Watch Nightmist and Dark Visionary (not to mention the Gloomy and Spite varients) that I may never fight him again.  He's way too easy now, and it's just getting monotonous.

I can say conclusively that playing elemental forms are not part of the requirement.

do you know if you had to discard any cards during this process? i have been wondering if discarding X cards is one of the parameters.

Since I didn't have any elementals out, the only discards I made for the whole game were because of environment or villian effects, which usually don't ever exceed 1 discard per round with the given situation.

No wait, I knew when to turn loose once.  That was a fun sentence to type.  I trashed Scholar's entire hand of about 14 or 15 cards in one go.  Only did it once, but that is a good point to bring up.  We cannot yet discount large amounts of discards then, can we?

I know I could have said that in a more compact way, but for some reason I write like I talk.

I've done multiple attempts testing various theories, all failing, and I haven't really ever discarded a lot of cards.

Perhaps that is indeed what I've been missing.

Still no unlock

Fanatic, Scholar, Ra, Visionary, and Greatest Legacy vs. Gloomweaver in Megalopolis.

Scholar was incapped on turn with Redirection in play. Incap damage came from Cursed Acolyte. Truth Seeker and bring What you need were both in play and had been used, damaging Gloom weaver with Truth Seekr.

Only elemental card I played was Mortal Form to Energy, but copies of all 3 were in Scholar's trash.

No character other than Scholar had ever dropped below 20 hp.

Waited to finish off gloomy until I had used Scholars incap ability at least once.

OK, so I don't think it's just discarding lots of cards, nor redirecting and discarding a lot of cards.

I tried two matches vs. Gloomweaver. In the first, The Scholar didn't do anything except attempt to draw more cards so he ended up discarding 23 to power a Know When to Turn Loose.  He also discarded 11 other cards throughout the match for other reasons.

In the second, 14 cards were discarded to a Toxic Seaweed, and a few more to other effects.  I also used Alchemecial Redirection in this one.

Both had The Scholar incapped just before the end.  Neither unlocked the variant.

I think I'll try again only counting discards the Scholar makes on his own turn.

Edit: And no, that didn't work.

Unlocked.

Gloomweaver in Realm of Discord.

Scholar, Legacy, Tempest, Wraith.

Scholar incapped from villain damage (fairly sure one of the cultists) without using redirection.

Gloomy defeated and variant unlocked on Legacy's incap turn (the turn after Scholar, who was incapped during the previous villain turn) by Legacy allowing Tempest to activate a power (Grievous Hail Storm).

Played literally every Scholar card except Alchemical Redirection, in fact was waiting to draw one at the end but had left Scholar too low and Gloomy surprised me and took him out before I could draw the card.  If discarding is being considered as a factor, I discarded about 12 cards for a Know When to Turn Loose (for zero damage, targeted something that wasn't lowest hp when Claustrophobic Delusion was in play).  I also specifically made sure I used each power at least once and healed once when the +1 healing mode was in play and also healed once when the healing=damage mode was in play.  I kept the 2 DR mode in play slightly longer but I'd be surprised if it was X amount of damage blocked, because I didn't get that much use out of it.  However I did do a fair amount of healing, mostly from one shots.  From other posts it doesn't look like the rest of the team is a factor, but just in case when I won, Legacy was also incapped and both Tempest and Wraith were low, both at least under 10.  Oh and since someone else mentioned it, I used Scholar's in cap ability once as well (+Power).

Unlocked. All I had to do was have a huge shmozz of a game with Gloomweaver where I drew every card, played every card, discarded every card, and used every power. It took an hour and a half because my iPad kept lagging every time I opened Scholar's window with his 30+ card hand. I slogged through it because I'm a sucker for achievements. But man, this was not all that fun.

Popesixtus, was The Scholar incapped at the end?

OK...  that was unexpected...  I just unlocked him!

I didn't use The Scholar's whole deck.  I didn't discard a ton of cards.  I didn't immediately defeat Gloomy after The Scholar got incapped.  In fact, The Scholar got incapped quite early and I thought there was no way I'd unlock him, but I might as well try continuing!

I'm not sure what the difference is to my previous attempts...  but here's all the info I can gather from the log for further help to others.  I'll list everything that happened to a Scholar card, just in case it helps.  I'll provide a summary of what I think might be the key at the end.

The Scholar, Haka and Ra battling Gloomweaver in Insula Primalis.

Turn 1:

The Scholar plays Don't Dismiss Anything.
Don't Dismiss Anything puts Know When to Hold Fast into play.

Turn 2:

The Scholar plays Bring What You Need.
The Scholar uses the power on Bring What You Need.

Turn 3:

The Scholar plays Keep Moving.
Keep Moving puts Solid to Liquid into play.
Keep Moving plays Mortal Form to Energy.
The Scholar uses the power on The Scholar.

Turn 4:

The Scholar discards Grace Under Fire.
The Scholar discards Flesh to Iron.
The Scholar plays "Get Out of the Way!".
The Scholar uses the power on Bring What You Need.

Turn 5:

Solid to Liquid destroys itself!
Mortal Form to Energy destroys itself!
The Scholar plays Offensive Transmutation.
The Scholar uses the power on Bring What You Need.
Primordial Plant Life destroys Bring What You Need!

Turn 6:

The Scholar plays Alchemical Redirection.
The Scholar uses the power on The Scholar.
The Scholar takes 20 damage (mostly redirected, as River of Lava and Cursed Acolyte both came out)

Turn 7:

Alchemical Redirection destroys itself!
The Scholar plays Keep Moving.
Keep Moving puts Mortal Form to Energy into play.
Keep Moving plays Solid to Liquid.
The Scholar uses the power on The Scholar.
River of Lava moved Keep Moving from The Scholar's deck to The Scholar's trash.
River of Lava moved Offensive Transmutation from The Scholar's deck to The Scholar's trash.
River of Lava moved Know When to Turn Loose from The Scholar's deck to The Scholar's trash.
A pair of Cursed Acolytes come out together and incapacitate The Scholar

Turn 8:

The Scholar uses the incapacitated ability "One hero may use a power now."

Turns 9-15:

The Scholar uses the incapacitated ability "Up to 2 hero targets regain 1 HP each."

I know I have played this combination of cards before, so I don't think any of them was important.  I know I have discarded a ton more cards before, so that can't be it.  The only other villain I've fought in the meantime from the previous attempts was Miss Information, who I had already defeated once before.  The Scholar was on that team, so perhas there's a condition that The Scholar defeats Miss Information, then The Scholar defeats Gloomweaver, but I really doubt that.

What I do think it might be is the amount of healing I did to others.  In all my other attempts, I never healed the other heroes much at all.  I would us Proverbs and Axioms at most once per run.  Perhaps that's the key.

So my current guess to the unlock condition is:

Defeat Gloomweaver with The Scholar on the team while The Scholar is incapacitated.  During the fight, The Scholar must heal other heroes for a total of X HP or more.

I think X may be around 10, but I'm not sure.  Or perhaps X is 20 and the heroes include The Scholar, but I'm fairly sure I've healed that much before too.

If anyone else can test out my healing others idea, that'd be great.

Yes he was. And thank goodness, cuz the game stopped lagging when he died!

OK, so it definitely seems incapping is required.  Which goes with the art on the Scholar of the Infinite too.

So did others with the unlock heal HP a lot?

I'm thinking the unlock has to be tied to either healing HP, redirecting damage, or perhaps some combination of both.  Other reports seem to have pretty much ruled out specific cards.

Scholar of the Infinite unlocked.

Fight was vs Gloomy in the Final Wasteland (I was trying for Haka at the same time, and didn't get him).

Team was Dark Vis, Grandpa Legs, Scholar, and Haka.

Outside of the actions mentioned, he was buffed a few times by Inspiring Presence, but everything else he did was self contained, and most all the damage taken was from Haka; his incap was brought on by an Alchemical Redirection when Haka swung his Taiha at Vis. I also specifically avoided using Motiviational Charge.

Pre 1: Took 6 from Chosen Disciple.

1: Transmutive Recovery, Power to heal 1.

Enviro: hit by a Skunk Ape.

2: Know When to Hold Fast.

Enviro: hit by a Skunk Ape.

3: DDA (Plays Prophetic Vision, Inspiring Presence, Keep Moving, which chains into Mortal Form to Energy then a Transmutive Recovery, and then he hit a pin for 3, also plays Haka of Shielding). He then healed for 1, and zapped the Ape for 2, destroying it.

Enviro: healed by Con's Bunker, zaps a pin.

Villain: punched by a Zombie.

4: Discards Flesh to Iron. Played BWYN, which he used.

5: Discards Keep Moving. Plays Proverbs & Ax: (Wrest, Danger Sense, Solid to Liquid, Mere), Visionary & Legs heal, Scho takes damage, heals self, and zaps a pin, Haka damages self, destroys the pin. BWYN.

6: Discards Grace Under Fire. DDA: Topdecks Brain Burn, Thokk!, Proverbs, Vitality Surge. Heals and zaps a pin.

Haka hits him with a Rampage for 1 (Punish & TTE in play).

7: Discards Keep Moving. Transmutive Recovery, zaps Gloomy for 3. BWYN.

8: Discards Flesh to Iron. Truth Seeker. Heals 1, Zaps Gloomy for 2.

9: Discards Grace Under Fire. Proverbs (Precog, Interception, Alchemical (finally), Elbow), Visionary heals, Legs takes damage, uses his power on Haka so that Haka can Mere, Scholar takes damage, heals self and deals 2 to Gloomy, Haka takes damage and Crushes). Truth Seeker for 3 to Gloomy.

10: Discards Flesh to Iron. Proverbs (Mental Divergence, Surge of Str, Expect the Worst, Enduring Intercession), Dark Vis takes damage, uses Foresight (I was trying to get HP low here to end the game soon), Legacy takes damage, heals Haka, Haka hits a Rat Beast, Scho takes damage, heals self, zaps Gloomy for 2, Haka takes 0 damage and finishes off the Rat Beast. TS for 2 to Gloomy.

Enviro: Skunk Ape hits Scholar for 1.

11: Discards Solid to Liquid. Get Out of The Way: 2 to Gloom & the Ape, heals 2, deals 3 to Gloomy. TS: 3 more to Gloomy.

Legacy plays Bolster, Scholar gets another Alchemical Redirection.

12: Discards Expect the Worst. Offensive Transmutation: 3 to Gloomy. TS for 3 to Gloomy.

(Reshuffles deck here)

Haka Elbow smashes Scho for 5, and Taiha's him for 5 more.

Legacy flying smashes the Scholar for 5.

13: Discards Expect the Worst. Alchemical Redirection. TS for 3 to Gloomy.

Haka Elbow smashes the Scholar for 5. Haka aims a Taiha hit at Visionary which incaps the Scholar via Alchemical Redirection.

Incap 1: One hero may use a power: Haka Mere's to smack Legacy.

Incap 2: One hero may use a power: Haka destroys his Punish the Weak.

And that was it. Haka was the last man standing, but I didn't manage to unlock him.

Hope that helps. If not, sorry for the massive text dump.

OK, so if it's a healing thing, it's all healing that counts.  Both to himself and allies.

Unlocked Scholar,

Gloomweaver (Advanced) in Wasteland

Scholar (incap via Abs zero "friendly" fire), Exp (incap via kryptid), Abs Zero very potent slinging ice every where and healing himself for a ton of hp

I think we are awefully close here. Just did a little bit of refining.

Party probably doesn't matter, took two very non magicky charachters. Expatriette and Abs Zero.

Someone other than Scholar can be down at the end, Exp was accidentally out when I finished.

I made a point of never healing anyone other than the character itself. Absolute zero got set up right away and I tried to keep track of how much but it was an insane amount and I got tired. Scholar healed himself for a moderate amount but nothing crazy.

I tried other set ups and failed but I think the reason I failed is I was intentionally playing scholar poorly so he didn't heal much, mainly redirected and died. In this battle Lots and lots of self healing. 0 ally healing.

Absolute Zero is going to be pretty happy, the wasteland will be a cold and lonely place, just the way he likes it.

Hypothesis:

A) Scholar gets incapped vs Gloomweaver but heros still win

B) a X amount of healing must happen. X>10

If I were to guess X it must be a significant number for the scholar or Gloom. Considering my game I probably healed over 100 so I can't say much. I figure in the game I won with no unlock I at least healed for a couple but I can't be sure.

Future thing to determine is if all healing counts towards requirement or only scholar healing. I didn't heal much with scholar but it is hard not to heal with him if you are going to use him at all and not turtle. I did have 1 or 2 moderate heals from that fire to healing card. when I played it I was also chaining that to some moderate energy damage so it might involve a certain amount of healing and damage within 1 turn for scholar. That would be next idea if the healing by itself turns out to be a dead end.

Good luck y'all! I am done with my testing...

Read the wall of text from Cokeandsympathy, looks like he did a lot of heal zapping. Rather than scholar healing per se it might be a minimum amount of zapping that chains from the healing.

In my successful run, here's the total of all HP healed with sources and number of times used (I saved the Steam log file of the run):

Ra - Staff of Ra: 5 HP (2)

The Scholar - Better Living: 5 HP (3)

Haka - Vitality Surge: 2 HP (1)

The Scholar - "Get Out of the Way!": 4 HP (1)

The Scholar - Incapacited Ability (heal Ra and Haka for 1 each): 14 HP (7)

Haka - Haka of Restoration: 2 HP (1)

So summarising, we have the following stats:

The Scholar healed himself: 9 HP

The Scholar healed any hero: 23 HP

Hero healing total: 32 HP

It should be noted that Pouch of Bones also healed a lot of Villain stuff this run, but I really don't think it counts.  If healing is a thing, I expect it's either the Scholar causes hero targets to regain at least 20 HP, or hero targets regain at least 30 HP.

So if it's either of those, along with The Scholar being incapped by the end, hopefully this is enough to cover them.
