DE Disparation: Guessing time! (Ha ha, time travel pun)

Gonna have to be honest, I think the ship sailed on these forums or the Reddit ever being lively again. Too many years of people being inappropriate in some manner while the mods perversely/backwardsly both refused to deal with them and instead threatened anyone who was bothered with lectures and bans.

So when Discord became a thing, that’s where most of the people who were bothered by it all went, either RoD or LP. (And indeed some Sentinels peeps I talk to one-on-one have expressed disbelief that I still came to these forums/Reddit even after all the nonsense, back when I used to try to drum up more participation here/there. I ask myself that question too sometimes.)

So while I welcome more Disparation content regardless, I don’t see a sustained increase in activity happening at this point unless there’s a massive increase in Sentinels fans to bring in people who don’t know about the bad times… and even then I’m not sure they wouldn’t just go to the Discords as people seem to prefer that in general over forums nowadays.

I don’t think Christopher will answer—if nothing else, he’s already at GenCon now, setting up and doing pre-event-events, and will not be reading the forums. But I can tell you that while GtG will be there in force at GenCon, their area is going to be Compile-centric. I’m sure they’ll have all their usual products as well, and they’re doing Spirit Island events and The Letters Page Live, but I’m highly confident that playable Disparation will not be making an appearance. It’s not like Defenders of the Realm and Compile, where a lot of effort went into making playable, presentable prototypes. When DIsparation is that close to being done, it’ll be weeks at most before it goes to the printers.

That’s what I was afraid of, that another month would go by without any significant reveal. Everyone got excited when they whetted our appetites right around the crowdfunding campaign, but seems like they definitely jumped the gun when it comes to estimated product completion. Some of that could not be helped, I know. Glad to hear it sounds like they’ve learned from that now.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing what does come out of GenCon as far as TLP goes. Those episodes are always different and interesting.

July’s update said

If you’re going to be at Gen Con, I’ll have some Disparation content with me to show off, and I very much look forward to doing so! As for updates here, the next month’s update will be on the Tuesday just after Gen Con, so we’ll be pretty beat, but not without content to share! Things I’m putting together to show off at Gen Con can be revealed in that update!

So unless plans have changed there should be something at Gen Con and on the next update.

People got to play some games with Disparation content at Gen Con as well, though I’ll let the peeps who actually went to Gen Con have their thunder by discussing that.

Should we know who the character getting Memory Lapsed is? Face and chest scars it appears, but not like Baron Blade IMO.

I’m not sure who it is offhand.

The background location gives me MDP vibes for some reason. Possibly a Citizen of the Sun, when they leased a ride from the Baron?

Issue cited is The Savage Haka #268 which puts it at least in the 2000s if not close to OblivAeon. The WT bot is not working so I can’t use that to get an idea for sure but off the Multiverse recap issue 164 of that comic is in November of 2001.

It’s the same arc as Haka’s card Dance in the Fray, I believe.

So presumably an arc of Visionary and Haka fighting minor crew members?

Hadn’t even looked to see if other cards referenced that. So must be La Capitan related.

Oh yeah, it’s totally the guy with blue tattoos (not scars) in the right background. Goatee matches too. I’m going to assume random crew member until told otherwise. Good sleuthing!

I guess the question now would be why does a time traveling pirate need to forget the time Haka and Visionary swabbed the deck with them?

Maybe it’s connected to the quote on Daner in the Fray - La Capitan learns critical information about Haka that she’s not supposed to know, and Visionary wipes the minds of everyone involved to keep the source of Haka’s power secret?

Anything on updates in Discord or other channels? Nothing on Backerkit since before going to PAX Unplugged, which had no real progress update. First Tuesday of the month has passed, and I’ll give them some leeway at the beginning of the year. Today is supposed to be back to regular Letters Page recording though. I haven’t listened to Play Greater Podcast in a while, but apparently development Hell was addressed in a recent episode. Just wondering if we should expect an update delayed by a week, or when?.. Appears we won’t be getting to fulfillment until >24 months after campaign close. sigh

The original estimated delivery was July 2024 so no matter how you shake it this was launched much earlier than the prior two sets. The campaign started in March of 2023.

FWIW, the RPG Kickstarter page also hasn’t had an update in 5 weeks now - and is, of course, overdue by much more than ~two years.

Some of that may be due the increasing number of comments from irate backers about “useless” updates that have nothing to say about the books actually promised by the project, instead telling them about the fanzine (which failed to arrive last month without explanation - but is its own rule system anyway, so not an SCRPG product) or their convention plans. There was the GenCon module last year (which is for SCRPG but wasn’t actually part of the KS originally, although backers received it), but outside of that I believe the most recent progress report on the game books was in May 2024.

I don’t know whether the RPG or the card game are top priority at this point, but neither seem to be anywhere close to completion.

I’m pretty sure Disparation is currently higher priority than whatever RPG books they’re currently working on, and Disparation is nearly done. Obviously the DE line is nowhere close to completion, but with the RPG we don’t even know how far they’re planning on taking it.

Sure we do. They owe RPG backers four hardcover books - the History of Sentinels Comics book, which is supposedly going to be pretty big and has no actual game content, the Diamond Book of Monsters, which should be about the same size as the Guise Book, a somewhat larger Darkwatch sourcebook, and a larger-still Urban Settings sourcebook. All of these were originally due by 2020, but of course COVID happened. All are currently projected for 2025 release dates.

There’s also the Sentinel Choices zine/game, which is its own system and got added to backer rewards following 2019 KS Zine Quest event - and which was most recently due to release in December 2024.

Yeah, but we know that the intention for DE is for it to go to 6 boxes and then probably stop. They’d hoped that there would be a ton more content for SCRPG: Core books for Prime Wardens, the Paradigms, and GLOBAL; settings books for space and more; plus organized play, a living FAQ, and a bunch of other dreams they’ve mentioned once or twice. We have no roadmap for the game going past the first wave of supplements.

Personally, I’d prefer they just make a second edition sooner rather than later—it’s a good core system, but there are a lot of ways in which it’s rough around the edges. But I don’t know if they have the core competency to do that job.

A lot of the original work was outsourced to Critical-Hits Studios. That might be an option, but it would require FRG to be interested in pursuing it.

The fact they haven’t released all the KS-promised books, though, makes it unlikely they’ll go with an update of the Core, yet. Maybe once they’re done with those?
